Do you think a school should do this?

It's all or none. There will be many times in life when that applies. They can certainly start to learn it now. DS was in grade school when certain classes were rewarded with pizza parties. He never seemed to be in any of those classes. Not a big deal.

The purpose of this way of rewarding seems to be to get the majority to try to make those who would miss the test to attend, however how many time are childre critisized for responding to peer pressure to do something naughty. Either peer pressure is right or wrong not just dependant on what the issue is.

DisneyJunkie - I WOULD call the superintendent. But it wouldn't be about the ice cream. Who cares about the ice cream. It's about how this principal is doing their job or in my opinion not doing their job very well.

Schools should use more positive reinforcement instead of negative. This just sends the wrong message to students and parents and I think the superintendent should be aware of it.

SO, if one person is the class missed testing the first day, noone in the class had an incentive to come in for further testing days, because they had already lost their reward? That's not very helpful~

I would be okay with all kids who were there all four days getting the ice cream, but the whole class shouldn't be responsible for one student not being there. That just causes hard feeling towards that child, which is also a bad situation.

Do you want me to call the Principal?:rolleyes1

They are kids, give them ALL Ice Cream. Anyone who dangles 'ice cream' out there and holds it against a whole class because one kid was out sick is sadistic.

Cant anyone just do something NICE anymore without having these insane bylaws? Crazy!:sad2:

I think it is crap, but I just would not volunteer for the thing. I would not go and make a big deal out of it. My kids would think I was nuts if I did....they would say something like...'mom it is just ice cream'.:lmao:

Now, if he was messing with their grades, I am coming to huff and puff and blow his house down.;)

Fair enough.

Would you speak to the principal first or go straight to the superintendent?

I just don't see this as a big deal.

Then again my son was one of the "bad kids" who caused his class to miss out on a pizza party each year when he was in middle school.

Each year the principal rewarded one class in each grade level with a pizza party if they were the first to turn in all of their lunch forms. I never fill out lunch forms.

It never occurred to me to complain. No matter how I try to dress it up, it would have boiled down to me complaining about a slice a pizza.

i work in a guidence office in a high school. at graduation children with perfect attendence from kindergarten till 12th grade get recognized.

there was one girl this year that wasn't recognized because she missed the last two days of kindergarten. she's never missed another day.

I think I would tell the principal that I realize that he has the right to do this but that I would not help him to do it. I would also tell the volunteers I had rounded up that I would not be able to be there and why.

You would call the superintendent about ice cream???

OP are the classes really that large? If so, the parents should be up in arms about class size, not ice cream.

Yes they are. Up to 3rd grade there are no more than 20 allowed in a class after that the amount is 38...the average is about 34.

Sure DISUNC if I was going to vote for you to be President I can surely trust you with doing that:lmao:

I am not volunteering for it. And I have not made a big deal out of it. But I did let her know how I felt. See below

I think I would tell the principal that I realize that he has the right to do this but that I would not help him to do it. I would also tell the volunteers I had rounded up that I would not be able to be there and why.

I sent her another e-mail yesterday to let her know how I was feeling about this whole situation and that I had 5 volunteers but could no longer ask parents to do something that I could not and did not approve of. I also stated that this is the first time in all my years volunteering that I have done this.

In addition I let her know that she has been disrespectful to me and other volunteers that I have sent her way. It was a long e-mail with many points and also about how all year long she has not returned my calls or e-mails when asking about issued for events. BTW she also blew up at me in her office one day because parents were complaining to me(as I was calling for volunteers) about the time for lunch that had been changed . I said Hay I'm just the messenger...dont shot me...I let her know that no teacher or principle had ever talked to me like that and no matter how much stress she was under being the new principle it was uncalled for.

IMO It is not up to me to chase her down over and over again to confirm plans she wants implemented. I found out yesterday also that she has decided to give the/my position of Lead coordinator to another parent. Whats funny is that it is the same person that has failed to show up at every event but 2 that she said she would do. She did not pick up the phone once to make calls for volunteers and left early at the 2 she showed up at.

Her front office personnel have told the principle over and over that Andrea has dropped the ball everytime that to rely on her for such a position may not be in her or the schools best interest. They said that I have been a asset to the school for 5 years so they were confussed.

Even at a meeting I found out 2 weeks ago that all the Deans and teachers at a meeting were singing me praise and that they wanted to see if they could get me to stay on even after my son graduated from there next year.

I think that they(Andrea and the Principle) are friends from a previous school. Remember this is the Principles first year here. She is not very popular. There are some good things she has brought to this school but many are far to ridged not only IMO but the staff as well. Who I am friends with and get the scoop.

I have no problem with Andrea taking this position...accually am kinda glad. But what bugged me is that she has been meeting with Andrea about 5 times to sketch out next year about there plans and never a phone call to me to inform my that she wanted Andrea to take over. I find that very disrespectful and no way to treat a volunteer or anyone.

I found out yesterday by Andrea who claimed to me that the Principle has started a brand new position just for her called "The lead Coordinator"....I was like...ummmmm that is a position that has been around for like 8 years.

Andrea was also taking credit for some of my work. I found this out one day when standing in the office talking to staff and Andrea was in the Principles office with the door open. It was a day that we needed 15 volunteers...not a big deal. I herd the Principle thank Beth for arranging it all and getting all the volunteers for it. Andrea said no problem anytime. Well not only did she do nothing she left half way through her volunteer time she said she would do, than came back at the end in time to pick up her son.

I was like okay....no big deal....if that rocks her boat and makes her world to state that she did that than fine. And so I continued chatting with my friends in the front office.

Anyway. She knows that I will be still a head lead parent to the 8th grade Dean next year and him only. It is ran where 6th takes care of 6th ,and so on. Each Grade has lead parents(that the coordinator gets by making phone calls) to help with that Dean with Events in that grade level. Than there is the Lead Coordinator that sees over all the schools events separate from that. And asked the leads to get volunteers and help organize. I can guarantee I will not see Andrea at one event next year and that she will leave it up to everyone else to get her job done for her. If she could not handle it as a Lead it will be interesting to see her do it as LC.

I know this sounds like I am upset with Andrea but I really am not. It is all about the Principle. Just wanted to give you a little insight on how the year has been going and why for me it is not just this event but others as well. Oh and by the way, she has not called me or sent me a responce yet on yesterdays e-mail about what I sent her. Wonder if she will or not.

Being the first class to..... whatever wins...., means a bit of peer pressure. No big deal IMO.

The children that don't attend all days of the test don't get ice cream - no big deal.

However, "if one child is sick, that child's whole class doesn't get the treat everyone else in school is getting " is a whole different ballgame and might leed to peer PUNISHMENT. I don't see how people can't see the difference.

Robin, your principal sounds like a piece of work. It sounds like she's going to live to regret her choices!

My response would be to not award the kids at all. They are suppposed to take the test, why do they need to be rewarded for just being there :confused3
However, since it was already planned I think its unfair to punish the whole class because some of their classmates were not there to take the test.
