I've no problem taking out kids in the early years for 5 school days. I mean, it's not like he's going to miss a science lab day or a new trig lesson. Plus, when my son was smaller I'd do extra work at home with him anyways.
We took him to Mexico this past winter, teacher was fine. I mean, what a life lesson, he saw a different culture, learned the value of learning another language (we had a hilarious time trying to order ice cream in Spanish from McDonald's) and learned some street smarts (navigating through foreign airport, customs, dealing with agressive vendors). I never went anywhere until I was an adult, want my children to experience it all!
He'll be in gr. 7 this trip, so it'll probably be the last one until he graduates, unless he's a super genius in high school.
OH YEAH, I also plan the trip when there's an inservice day so he's only missing 4 school days instead of 5.
