Do you take your kids out of school to go??

We are pulling my daughter out of school to go this year. My husband will be home for R&R from Iraq so thats only time frame we can go this year, She is in prekindergarten thats a half day program at the Elem. school. She goes to military schools and they are understanding about kids missing school when Daddies come home for 2 weeks. She will not miss the whole two weeks though, just one week. When he returns from Iraq she will be in Kindergarten and his leave will be during school time so she will be missing a few days again so we can go back to Disney to celebrate him returning :)

We use to take our kids out of school when they were younger. Since our oldest started high school we arent as comfortable with pulling him out of school.

In our school district in WI we are allowed 10 days of absence for family vacations, and that is what we are taking the kids (DS 1st grade, and DD Kinder) out for. I already have received permission from our school and will have homework to do. DD's is easy, have fun and journal. DS will have math and journaling. Since we drive from WI there will be time in the van to get things done.

I'm just curious, I've seen others post about this before too, but how can a company stop you from taking vacations at a certain time of year? I mean, summer, fall and spring? Do you mind my asking what kind of job it is?

I know my personal accountant never gets to go away for Spring Break(tax time) and usually not xmas or nye because alot of companies are doing year end inventory and they need to be on site to verify counts and do early legwork for getting the ball rolling for audited statements.

Her girls(well this plan is shot now since oldest is in HS) go to a Catholic school with an extended yr. They got a week off in October, which she said was great for doing WDW.

Well I do not have kids, but I have a feeling that I will be taking my kids out for one week (either before or after march break) once in a while. I am a teacher so that would be the only time.

DH parents always did that when he went as a child and they are teachers as well. I have many years to wait for that though....i'm not even preggy yet!! (Hopefully Nov/07 :woohoo: )

We are taking our 3 oldest kids out of school from 3-19 to 3-23 for our upcoming WDW vacation. My husband works swing shifts and doesn't get weekends and Holidays off like a lot of people, and this is when he was told he can take his vacation. So this is the only time we'll get to go on a family vacation together this year and I sure as heck am taking the opportunity! I already talked to my kids' teachers and they will be working on and turning in the majority of their work that they'll miss before we even leave. Any that is left they will do sometime during our vacation. So they will not be behind. They are in the 5th, 2nd, and 1st grades and all 3 of them are doing very well in school this year so that makes the decision easier for me too.

But YES we most certainly do take our children out of school for vacations. and its not just for Disney. I am very aware of curriculums (sp?) and try very hard not to take DS7 out of school during testing or anything super important. I give his teachers plenty of notice and request school work be sent with us. :thumbsup2 My husband's business has busy times, super busy times and slow times. We go when we can, i.e. slow times, otherwise we would never get a chance to vacation as a family. I work for the School District and have the same trype of schedule as my husband. When we find 2 slow weeks that over lap for both of us, we go! Not to mention affordablility! When the kids are out of school so is every other family in the US. Hence the term, "Peak Season". I would rather not spend thousands of dollars to stand in line 75% of the time. :scared1:

We have been in November, when my daughter was in kindergaten. Now that she is older and in middle school - we go in August. I do miss the lower crowds and cooler temps in Nov. but, August is not as bad as I thought.

I don't normally but because I am a teacher and I can't take the time off. This year though we may have her miss the last two days of the year. (She is in a different district) They took more snow days and have the year extended to June 5th. It will be wierd to miss the last couple days but at least she will not miss any instruction.

Our district limits unexcused days to 5 a year and they need to be 'approved.' I think it is a little hard since not everyones vacation can fall in the narrow summer window. I start school the last couple days of July. She goes into the second week of June. We have 4-H fair the end of June. Hubby has a hard time getting time off in July.:headache:

We take ours out of school. In fact, we are leaving in three weeks! We're going for 9 days but the kids are only missing 3 days of school. We scheduled the trip around days off.

We also took them out last year, and both years we haven't had a problem. The teachers give what work they can before we leave, and finish making p when we get back. Now, next year might be a different story...the DS will be in Middle School. We will have to step back and take a look at the situation then.

I don't feel that bad of taking them out for two weeks, because we go to Disney every other year only.

We started taking our children out of school for family holidays when they were in grades 2 and 3. My husband is self employed and certain times of the year are just not good for him. I always let the teachers know ahead of time so we can do the work before we leave. I am honest with the teachers and tell them that chances of work being done while we are away are slim to none. One temporary teacher was mortified but,(and i mean no offense to teachers as many of my friends are in the profession) I told her that my husband does not get all summer off or three weeks during the school holidays to spend with us. Most teachers are understanding. We know that once thay are in high school we will not be able to do this, so for now we will enjoy it. Children grow so fast, and we will never be able to turn back time.

We didn't have any excused absences in our district. We had only sick days.

Because it was quite a bit of stress for all of us (very inner-city school) our district told us to take "mental health" days to rest up and take a break every now and then. That helped a lot!

Yes, the previous 2 times I have taken DD to disney she missed school. Her teachers were very accomodating and gave her the work she would miss so she would not have a ton of work upon returning to school.

we have historicaly taken the kids out of school to go on trips, this year they are going on a second trip to WDW meaning missing a second week of school. I once read a post here that said something along the lines of a child wont remember what they rememberd in any given week in school but the memories formed on a family vacation will last a lifetime. Between mine and my dh's work schedule, the kids sports and school we dont get enough quality time together. I believe that our vacations are as important for their development as some of the things that they learn in school.

DH works for a concrete company and in Pa they cannot pour all year long. It is grounds for termination if you elect to take off during their busy seasons.

I may have been the poster that wrote that.
I know I've said that before.

The kids & I (I'm a teacher) are missing 6 school days in early May for a WDW trip.

I can't wait! We're so excited!!

Son is only in Kindergarten but we took him out for 6 days in October for Disney and intend to do so every year until we determine there is any issue. Luckily the school will excuse the absence but he hasn't missed another day this year so even if it's unexcused I don't get the problem. If 6 days out of a 180 day school year for a good student is causing an issue, there are far bigger problems to deal with.

We do this because this is the best time for our family to vacation for a number of reasons and regardless it's what we prefer. But on the note for jobs -when both parents are working and if either or both are in demanding careers, it is very difficult to coordinate time off during school off times. Summer is not really that long and often has other obligations taking time as well and that family time during vacations is critical to a family dynamic -disney or otherwise.

My husband is an accountant. Busy seasons of Sept-Oct and Jan-April are not even possibilities for us!

My husband does heating and air work so of course the major winter months and the major summer months are a no go with his company. We enjoy the fall months though, or early spring for vacations :)
