Do you still need a quart baggie for liquids and gels at airport?

I noticed the last time I flew that they didn't require us to take out our quart baggies of 3 oz liquids and gels at airport security. Did they do away with that? I would like to pack all of my makeup and face care in my carryon for our upcoming Alaska cruise so I'm hoping this is no longer a rule.

Thanks for any comments or info!

You were shunted to a line using Precheck.

For normal people who aren't lucky enough to go through that line, yes you still need the baggies. If you're going as a family I see you have a teen boy. He might not need much of his baggy, so feel free to put some of your stuff in his bag. :) Husband's, too, if he doesn't have much use for "his" baggy. :)

LOL. I can't remember how many lipsticks and skincare products go in my man's 3-1-1 bag.

Good to know, but since I am the family safety officer I collect anything that even remotely looks like it belongs to "liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes"

And of course they still find some reason to search my bags.

not having to take out the 311 baggie is not the same as not needing to follow the 311 rule.

you still must follow the 311 rule that has not changed.

what has changed is that depending on the line you're in and the airport you're in you may not have to take the baggie out.

if you end up in the "precheck" line you don't have to take the baggie out nor do you have to do things like take off your shoes.

then there are some instances where if you are not in a precheck line they ask you to keep your baggie in your carry on.
this happened to me at MCO last month.
i was not in a precheck line and i did still have to take off my shoes but i was told to leave my baggie in my carry on.

you need to follow the 311 rule and you need to be prepared to take it out.

Thanks you guys! I think most of my makeup will be fine as its powders but does lotion or cream need to be in the baggie or just liquid and gels?

lotion and creams are considered a liquid.
things like tooth paste, mascara, cream blush, cream eye shadow, and lipgloss are also liquids.

I'm sorry I'm daft, but I haven't flown anywhere in about 20 years...what is a 311 baggie? What about aerosol sunscreen?? I'm confused about all this!

http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/3-1-1-liquids-rule

its been in place since 2006.
luckily it didn't start until a couple weeks after i got back from europe or my liquids would have been thrown out and i would have been ticked since i bought a number of expensive liquids on my trip.

And I could be way wrong, but at the beginning of it, didn't many TSA areas HAVE baggies for people to use?

Of course the issue would be for the containers holding more than 100ml. Or things like perfume where a 100ml container is rare (that's big for perfume) but the actual container is very big.

Does anyone know if you can bring the little shot bottles in your 311 bag and how many? Not for drinking on the plane but for the resort room. We are trying to avoid a grocery stop as we are getting in late.

you can.
you can bring as many as will fit in the 311 baggie.
my friend and i brought some before.

Here's my real world experience with baggies. At most, I usually only have 2 or 3, 3oz bottles of anything. I just stuff them in my messenger bag compartments. TSA has never asked me to take any of them out nor require me to put them in any baggie. I think the baggie comes into play when you have lots of 3oz bottles and helps facilitate and expedite the screening process.

No, it "comes into play" with every trip through airport security, all over the world, irregardless of how much is in the bag. If what you're saying is true, you must not travel very often via plane and you have encountered incredibly lax TSA agents.

They may not have been in prechek. In our several of my recent Airport Security Screening experiences even the non prechek lines have not done the no shoes and 311 Baggie drill. Since the Airport Security Screening authorities don't communicate process stuff "in the interest of safety," there is no way of knowing whether there has been a change in policy or if those Airport Security Screeners were lax and sloppy.

IIRC the 311 rule applies to prechek, it's just that the Baggie gets to stay in your carry on.

I guess TSA has been lax. But I find it incredibly coincidental they've all been lax in all my travels.

A gallon bag holds a lot :) We never have a problem with one holding everything for our family of 4.

A couple of times this past year alone, I have somehow completely forgotten to pull out my baggie (not in precheck lane). Panicked as I watched my bag go through but nobody bothered me, stopped me, or even asked any questions. I guess they are getting more lax?

Many more lanes now that allow you not to take out your baggie and remove shoes.
