And if so, what do you speak?

I speak a smattering of Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese. I know enough French to ask directions and wish I could learn to speak Spanish fluently!

Just curious, I know this is quite a diverse group.

After 4 years of high school Spanish, I knew enough to survive in Los Angeles for a week. ;)

I speak Spanish and Italian fairly fluently; basic French, and a teenie, tiny bit of Russian. I know some sign language, also.

I studied a lot of languages in high school and college because I find them fun and interesting--unlike math. :crazy2: Once you learn Spanish, Italian and French can come fairly easily as they are all pretty similar.

Yes, it does! Adding that to my list ASAP. :)

I'll speak tagalog(Philiipines) to the elders in my family. Also, I can speak a bit of German but it's very little. I've forgotten a lot of spanish that I took while in HS but I can order just about any mexican dish in spanish! :rotfl2:

I speak Spanish and am learning Italian. I do find it somewhat easier, in that I understand conjugation and the principles of the grammar, but I find the vocabulary slightly more confusing. I tend to second guess myself because a lot of words ARE very similar or the same as Spanish, but then others are completely different. I have to be careful and make sure I'm using the right language.

My grandparents are French-Canadian so I can speak French passably well. I should be able to speak it better but *sigh* I didn't see my GPs much as a child and when I got older I was too lazy to brush up on my language skills.

I still get confused sometimes and find myself speaking a Spanish/Italian mish-mosh. Then even I don't understand what I'm saying. :)

Oh, I can also swear in Polish fluently. My grandparents used to speak Polish when they didn't want us to know what they were saying - but you KNEW when they were swearing - those words stick with you. ;)

As a kid, we always learned the swear words first! Such naughty kids, we were!!!

English and German fluently
French and ASL very well but not quite fluent.
Spanish, enough to understand most people and get along in So Fla
Russian a smattering
Japanese forgotten more than I remember. Spoke it very well as a kid.

I'm fluent in Spanish and competent in sign language. I can read pretty much any Latin-based language.

What about pig latin? I'm fluent there. :)

Not just as a kid.....Ex-DH was stationed in Germany in the 1970's and I went over for a year. Most of the first words I learned were 'food' words....but the words I remember are mostly cuss words. Hmmmm...I seem to have a pattern forming here... :guilty:

I am fluent in English, American Sign Language which are the languages in which I primarily work. I haven't worked in Spanish in several years, but it comes back to me when I need it...soon it should be better since my best friends family is visiting from Venezuela in a few weeks. I also know some Mexican Sign Language and have interpreted from it to English. I also know Dutch after having lived in the Netherlands for a year and I can get around in French to get where wanted...oh, and a few signs from French Sign Language. And I can swear in several other languages or at least say enough words or signs to get me in trouble with the locals. I've tried to learn Japanese but struggled with the writing systems.

I absolutely love languages and try to learn as much as I can whether I will ever need them again...I'm just fascinated! I guess that is why I am an interpreter...I get to do a job that I love and enjoy! I am one of the lucky ones!
