Do you smoke cigarettes?

I did not find the OP's tone offensive at all. She said she wished HER parents would quit. My mother in law died of lung cancer caused by heavy smoking at 62. My brother in law just had quadruple bypass surgery - smoked 4 packs a day. My mom died of lung disease brought on my second hand smoke...I could go on and on.

I am grateful I never started. The nasty comments about alcohol and perfume seemed a bit harsh. I don't think the smell of them can kill you, although they can be offensive. But second hand smoke does kill.

Nope..not a smoker here. No one in my family is, for that matter. My DD's both have asthma, my DH has allergies. I could go on and on about smoking and how its not fair that my family has to be subjected to it, but I won't. I WILL say that my ex-husband's sister just died after a 2 year battle with lung cancer. She was 40.....40!! She was like a second mom to my oldest DD, who from the ages of 13-15 had to watch her aunt suffer. It was NOT pretty. My DD ended up suffering from depression most of that time and didn't really begin to get any better until her aunt passed away. Now my DD campaigns against smoking and I imagine she will for the rest of her life. I am very proud of her. I'm sorry if it sounds as if I'm ranting here...but anytime I get a chance to campaign on her behalf, I'll do it. I watched her AND her aunt suffer miserably. I only beg those of you who smoke to please think about your family. Its too sad to see someone so young die unnecessarily. My ex-SIL sat thru her only childs wedding a few months before she died. The cancer had spread to her brain so she knew very little of what was going on. How sad for her only DD to have to go thru this with her mother so sick. I'm not questioning anyone's intelligence here...I understand how hard it is to quit...I just anted to share my personal experience in hopes it might give someone that little extra oomph to quit. :sad1:

Smoking, no never have, hate smoke to much, now taking a dip of tobacco now and then yeah, guilty.

:grouphug: I'm so sorry your family had to go through that.

I just wanted to say without any antagonism whatsoever, that a lot of anti-smoking campaigns can really backfire. Some people just have a rebellious spirit, so to be told they shouldn't do something can send them in the opposite direction you intend. I know that's what got me started as a teen. Immature, yes. But that's just the way it was, unfortunately.

No, I don't smoke, but I did as a teen. My stepdad smokes but won't around my dd out of respect. I am grateful for that.

i quit 5 months ago-i smoked 3 packs a day and had been smoking since i was 16...i am now 35
i quit with some friends that i work with
doing it as a group thing really helped
i couldnt have done it without them
though it has been tough with high stress lately i am determined to stick with it but i am still using the patch-the lowest level

I did, age 13 to about 28 or so. Was smoking 2 packs a day, unfiltered Camels. :faint: So happy I quit.

I have left several weddings, charity dinners, restaurants because I can not take the smoke. There is a lot of pending legislation here in Illinois for banning smoking in ANY building and I am as active as I can be, phone calls, emails, to legislators in support of them. Hopefully we will follow the lead of places like New York and California. And hopefully, some day, the government will stop talking out of both sides of their mouth and quit supporting the tobacco industry.

I don't somke, never have, never even tried it. I grew up with both parents as smokers and boht Grandfathers. I thought and still think that it is discusting. My Father quit 2 years ago and has never flet better. My Mom has no desire to quit, she says she enjoys it. It worries me, because her father died 3 years ago, and the cause was smoking related, he basically sufficated to death. But even watching him didn't change her mind...it scares me that I will be there watching her die the same way.
I agree with the OP it is a discussting habit, and the smell of it is gross. But to each their own...you can't change people even though you would like. Where I am from the have a non smoking pan for the entire province. You can't smoke anywhere in public, including bars and pubs.
The people on here who have gotten defensive with the OP comments, are you smokers? I would assume so or you wouldn't have gotten so defensive about it. I guess my biggest concern is what the second hand smoke does to the non smokers that don't have a choice whether or not to be around it, such as children. Everyone says if you don't like it, then don't go there where there is smoking. But in homes where parents smoke the children don't have a choice.

This is just my opinion...didn't mean to go on a rant there...just is a very sensitive topic for me I guess.

Nope - I don't...
If you want to smoke - fine - that's your choice - just don't do it around me or my family please. We don't need/want to inhale the second hand smoke.

I smoked from the age of 17 until I was 21. I quit when I found out I was pregnant. It wasn't really that hard since I was doing it for my ds.
I have since smoked a few cigs, but now I can't even stand it. Yuck. I can't believe that I ever did it!

For those who chew, I just went to a friend's funeral who got lip cancer that spread to his brain. He was my age. He just missed our 10 year High School reunion.
