Do you smoke cigarettes?

It just breaks my heart that both of my DSs smoke (they are 23 & 25). I have been an anti-smoking advocate for many years. DH & I don't smoke; my father was a heavy smoker. I guess it also makes me angry that my sons smoke - they were both on my "dime" when they started (whether in HS or college - don't know which). I hate that I finacially (unknowingly) supported this bad habit.

I don't. I admit that I've been tempted to in the past, just to see what all the hype is about. But the last thing I want or need is a habit I can't break.

Yes, but what's the point of this thead? A little bored? You don't smoke, good for you. You will never be stinky and I am sure that you do not wear any kind of scents, right? Because I get severe headaches from strong perfumes...I think perfume should be banned.

OMG, I so agree that perfume should be banned. I can't tell you the headaches I've had lately from this woman at work who literally bathes in this crap that does NOT smell good.

I'm a former smoker....glad I quit, wish I knew then what I know now. But cigarette smell does not bother me. I mean stale smoke is kind of nasty, but I think a freshly lit smoke smells good. :Sometimes I go hang out with the smokers so I can get a whiff. :teeth:

No but I used to, it's been over a year now since I had a cigarette. I started when I was 17 and quit last year at age 24. I'm glad I quit although it was hard and I've gained a lot of unwanted weight from it. My grandfather died of emphysema when I was 12 and we all watched him deteriorate so I'm surprised I even started smoking. My mom smoked from age 16 to 45, my dad still smokes and refuses to quit although we're pretty sure he is on the same route my granfather was, sadly.

My feelings on smoking are the same as when I was a smoker, I respect people's choice to smoke and don't mind it as long as people are polite about it and how it affects others, no judgements.

I quit February 7, 1998 at 3:22 and 8 seconds in the afternoon. I don't miss it at all.

No, I don't.

I'm glad I never started, as I can only imagine how difficult it must be to quit. Nicotine's such an addictive substance.

I don't and have never felt the need to try it. My grandad died of lung cancer what I was 6 and it scared me. I vowed then I would never smoke. No one in mine or DH's family smoke either. I have friends who smoke though and don't mind that. Each to their own choice.

I did, age 13 to about 28 or so. Was smoking 2 packs a day, unfiltered Camels. :faint: So happy I quit.

I have left several weddings, charity dinners, restaurants because I can not take the smoke. There is a lot of pending legislation here in Illinois for banning smoking in ANY building and I am as active as I can be, phone calls, emails, to legislators in support of them. Hopefully we will follow the lead of places like New York and California. And hopefully, some day, the government will stop talking out of both sides of their mouth and quit supporting the tobacco industry.

Umm, On better thought, back to your thread!

I was so used to how the smoking laws are in NY that when I went to Alabama to visit relatives I was shocked that people were smoking in a restaurant...it was truly gross try to eat and smelling cigerette smoke!!

Not cigarettes. Quit the day I graduated form High School. Just teenage stuff, you know. Glad I quit. Since moving to California, I have taken up smoking again, just cigars, and only on occasion. Talk about offensive. :teeth:

No. I did try once when I was 14, but it made me sick. :crazy2: Lucky for me. Most of my friends and relatives that used to smoke have all quit. :goodvibes

I smoked cigarettes for 33 years. I have P.A.D. in one leg from smoking. My sister died this January from emphysema (she was 57). Enough was enough. Stopped the cigarettes and switched to a pipe but was still getting the nicotine and kept craving the cigs so much I actually bought a few packs of those "nicotine free" cigs. Realized this was stupid so I just stopped cold turkey. Been almost a month now and I'm doing ok. It is NOT EASY but I keep the image of my sis at 85 pounds with 24 hour oxygen :sad1: , and that keeps me going. With that said, I could never be a anti-smoking activist. Smoking is your personal choice and I would never tell someone else to quit. That's your business, not mine.

Sadly even though it may sound demeaning everything the OP said is true. I also grew up in a house full of smoke. After daddy died we tried painting the bedroom white and the nicotine on the walls honestly would not come off. You could spray cleaner and it would run yellow down the walls. It was gross.

My mother was a chain smoker for 47 years! She passed away Dec. 14, 2004 at the age of 63, just dropped dead from heart failure, in which I am sure (and so were her many physicians) smoking was a factor. She lived with us (all of my life I lived with my mom and was raised in a house full of smokers as well, and my husband was a smoker too but quit 2 years ago, :) and says he feels and breathes so much better-. Anyhow, where my mom sat all the time smoking her cigs, the walls turned tan. It wasn't really noticeable until we started painting but then it was a shock to see the "stain" on the walls. Yes, it was gross. Also when I would leave for work in the evenings, you could see the smoke pouring out of our house, it was like living in a smoke tent.

I don't condemn people who smoke, it is their choice. I do tell my really close friend that still smokes that I wish she would quit, she witnessed all of my mom's health problems and I don't want to see her end up in that shape. I honestly don't understand people who start smoking now. Our nephew is 21 years old and smokes, he already has a terrible cough.

Since my mom passed away we do not allow smoking in our vehicles or in our house. I've worked hard to clean up the walls and get the smell out.

I grew up around chain smokers in a smoke filled home. :(

DH has severe sinus problems so even the slightest whiff of smoke causes his head to immediately fill up, awful pain and the inability to taste or smell for several days afterward. Many times it turns into a full blown sinus infection and even bronchitis so we avoid smoke like the plague. Years ago at work he would have to sit in manager's meetings with others smoking at the table. It was torture. Thank God those days are behind us.

In my job as a cardiac nurse I have to counsel my patients on smoking cessation - a requirement from the national accreditation board. Having a life threatening event like a heart attack or pulmonary embolus is enough to get most people to stop without a lot of effort on our part; for others a hospital stay is sometimes enough when they realize they are lucky nothing serious occurred. It's a shame it has to come to that. I am amazed at the number of people who still smoke knowing what we know today. Is it their right? Sure. Is is wise to do? That's for each individual to decide. :scratchin

Dont smoke, never even tried it, no desire to. DH doesnt smoke, my family doesnt smoke so if I am aroud it for even a few seconds, I went to gag. Thats good enough reason to stay a non smoker to me!
