Do you shoot manual?

I probably shoot 99% of my photos in Av. Manual is used when the Av can't get the exposure I want. These situations include things like when I don't want the sky blown out, I'll switch to manual and shoot it differently until I get what I like. It is very hit or miss in those situations when it comes to my knowledge/experience.

Just curious...what advantage does shooting manual give you in these situations? When I'm shooting "fast paced", I usually opt for some form of auto or semi-auto exposure to reduce the number of variables I have to juggle. How are you using manual to help you?

Mark,

I find I can't get the shutter speed fast enough without flash and the aperture wide open.

I think the only time I have shot manual for more then a few pictures was during hockey games. I get a good exposure set I want, then dial it in. The arena does not change it lights during the game, so everyone should be the same. Makes it very easy to batch edit too.

Everything else I use A or P.

Forget shooting in manual, what I want to know is if anyone reads the manual?

only the part on setting multiple flash units for wireless....everything else was similar to my old 35mm slrs

Absolutely. Well, actually, I think I didn't read my K100D manual but that's only because it was so much like my *ist DL, which I did read cover-to-cover. There's too many little hidden features on these modern DSLRs, IMHO, to not read the manual; otherwise you may be overlooking something valuable.

Today I finished reading the manual for the K20D and mine hasn't even been shipped yet. Thank goodness for PDFs. :) (Actually, Beach is disappointing me - most stores have been shipping them for a few days or a week, and Beach hasn't shown them in stock yet; I even talked to them on the phone today. Amazon is showing it in stock but usually ships slowly - if Beach doesn't ship by Friday, I'll cancel and just buy through Amazon.
