There was a discussion on this on the radio station I listen to on the way to work this morning.

One person bought a $1500 plasma TV for a party, kept it a few weeks because they were "attached to it" , and then returned it for a refund. Did I say that the party was an outdoor bonfire party, and the TV smelled like smoke?!

Another caller bought a CAR at a place that had a "30 day guarantee" that it could be returned if any problems. She took it back on day 29 and demanded her old car back, which had been detailed and had the tires replaced!

I don't even take back gifts I don't like or have no use for!

So, do you return things you have used?

no, but a lot of people do. I see it everyday.

Queen of returning used things is my sister-in-law.

Nope only time I return something is if it is the wrong size (clothing) or is defective/broken.

HEY does this mean I can return frog since he is broken? :lmao:

Only if it's broken. The woman with the car, surely she had to pay for the detailing and new tires. And would she automatically get that back? What if they had sold it already? :confused3

if i iused it and it did not break, then no i aint returning it,,lol,, which is partially why i have tons of extra hardware in the shed from jobs where i over ordered by one or two..lol..

hey. its noit nice to hijack aidens moms thread that way.,

I have a friend that is always talking about not having anything to wear and if I say "why don't you wear that .......... that you wore the other day?" she always tells me that she returned it! I think it's stealing. Unless something is found to be defective, it should not be returned after it's been used. I hvae worked retail before though, so I absolutely know that it happens all of the time. Check things you buy very carefully for signs of use.

My FILs wife does this all the time!! :sad2:

I return unused things and stuff that does not work (just returned a camera bettery that was a dud).

I said "other". I do not buy things to "borrow" and then return. I do, however, return things that I have used. I return used things that are either defective or don't work like I expected them to. For instance, I recently returned a cell phone headset to Office Depot. It technically worked, but it did not work well. I could have just kept it and bought a new one, but I *thought* I was buying a good item. Office Depot had no problem returning my $$.

The only time I will return used items is if they are defective or wear out way before when they should. For example, I bought my 6yo a new backpack for school. He wore it on the first day and when he got home I noticed that there was a ripped seam. It's nothing that he could have done. We took it back and exchanged it for the same item (which was then on clearance :cool1: ).

But no, I wouldn't buy an item with the intention of using it and then returning it.

I have no problem returning something I've used for a little bit if it doesn't do what it's supposed to or what I expected it to. I always save the packaging and instructions just in case. Earlier this year I ordered a $1000 lens from Amazon and found it too heavy and too slow for my needs. I returned it in new condition and do not feel one bit guilty. Why should I? You can do tons of research on the net but there are some things you just need to see/touch/use to make the final decision to keep it.

I usually avoid places with overly restrictive (restocking fee as well) return policies unless I know for sure that I'll be keeping the product.

I return defective items and items that don't stand up as they should.

I also once returned a piece of art I had bought. The store had a 180 day "return for any reason" policy and the piece of art just wasn't working. It's so hard to picture in the store what something will look like in your house. They took it back cheerfully, no questions asked.

I experience just this thing last night:

I went to Target and bought 4 pairs of playschool jeans for my oldest DS (the type that if they come home covered in stains, I won't feel bad about throwing them out) in the wrong size. Returned them later that night and there was a women there with a container of eyeshadow that was so used you could see the metal in the bottom of the tin. The clerk said, "I'm sorry I can't return something that is so used". The women said, "I don't like the color now that my tan is fading, I have the receipt". I could hardly keep a straight face and left before the discussion got too heated.

Mine too. She is the queen of buying stuff keeping it as long as possible then returning it when it is on sale and rebuying it at the sale price. I do not go shopping with her anymore. She made us drive across town to return socks she found somewhere else for a .50 cent difference. I offered her a dollar to shut up and not make me drive across town but no. She insists the 50 cents come from the store. :sad2:

Sometimes you just want to smack people. Some nerve they have. :furious:

And I have on a few (very few) occasions bought (iow "rented") something I knew I was going to return after I used it once. If it's still in new and resellable condition, what's the big deal?

I should have been more clear, I wasn't really talking about returning defective items. That is what the return policies are really meant for.

I mean buying things with the intention to use them for a while and then return them.

I rarely return anything and I'd never return anything used. I probably have 20+ bags of brand new items in a closet. I really don't like shopping and hate making returns, so if I can't mail it back it's probably not going back.

My son hates to shop, so I will buy items in different sizes, colors, and styles, knowing that I will return some of them. But he doesn't really wear them; he only tries them on.
