Do you regularly use disposable plates?

A coworker and I were talking, and don't ask me how, but we got on the subject of paper plates. He said that's all they use at his house, which was just so odd to me. We never, ever use them unless we're having a party or barbecue or something like that (and sometimes not even then). So we started asking around the office, and out of the 19 people, I was the only one that used regular plates. What's up with that?

(Don't get me wrong, to each his own, I don't see anything wrong with paper plates! I think growing up that my gramma thought of them as a waste of money, so I just followed in her footsteps. I doubt that, with dishwashing detergent and water and electricity, regular are that much cheaper than disposable, if at all. )

I use them for any type of quick meals - pizza, paninni's, BLT's, even hot dog and hamburgs sometimes. So convenient

When I met my now DH - he used paper plates exclusively because he didn't want to do any dishes. It took me awhile to wean him off them after I moved in - he would still come home with a package of plates now and again but over time I convinced him to use real plates. Now we only use them for outdoor summer eating

Winter - quick sandwich, maybe a pizza, etc.

Summer - just a bit more often. Want to get outside a lot faster, go for a walk, etc. Barbecues more.

The kids and I eat off of paper plates almost every single night but DH does not. I even have the throw away bowls too. We are on the run a lot so it makes it easier for me, and anything that makes my life easier I will do. I do have standards though, we use real utensils.

Our dishwasher broke and I can't stand doing dishes so we are using them pretty exclusively now. Before, myself and the kids would use them but DH will not. He won't use plastic cups either. Prior to that, I would use them often for things that didn't need to be cut (think steak).

My MIL uses them a lot. She was the first person I ever met who did. I was always brought up to believe paper plates were an extravagance.

While I do use paper for large picnic crowds, even for camping we use washable plates.

I have a dishwasher now, but lived for years without one. I had dishes to wash any way and plates are easy. It never seemed like it would save me any effort. Now - disposable pots and pans I could see!

Yes, far more than I'd like to. I don't know why, but we cannot keep plates! I don't know if I have the clumsiest family in the world or what, but they constantly break them.

As of right now, I don't have a single plate that matches another, and of those we only have about five. It drives me insane. Bowls, glasses, cups... all fine. It's just plates we can't keep hold of.

We use them a lot - cheapy, thin ones. Plastic cups, too. Started when we were funning the dishwasher twice a day. When the kids were little, it made meal cleanup much easier, and I needed anything to make my life easier.

Nope. Waste of money and bad for the enviroment. Unless something really topsy-turvey is going on (new birth, death or serious illness, just moved in and still un-packing) no one in my extended family uses paper plates, even for parties.

I don't judge those that choose to do it, but I'll admit it does make me scratch my head a bit.

Also how else do you cover the stuff in your microwave?

We do everyday. Initially it started because of the sheer number of people sitting at our dinner table. It was a yours/mine type of situation with 8 children and 2 adults. Add in friends on a Friday and Sat. Just doing the pans and whatnot was overwhelming.

Now, we are down to a few left in the house, we all have varying schedules and honestly, the time I have with them I don't want it to be doing dishes! We do use regular cups and silverware though!

Wow, this is interesting!

We never use them, not even for BBQ. The only time I ever buy them is for the kids' birthday parties.

We got two sets of "everyday" dishes as wedding gifts (service for 12 of each) and still use them, 18 years and 2 kids later. We rotate between them when we get tired of one pattern. One is plain white, which can be dressed up for special occasions; the other is a country blue which is obviously an everyday pattern, but we like it for, well, everyday.

I use plates everyday. We only use paper for parties or get togethers.

Mostly I use them for cooking things (and reheating) in the microwave. My kids use them when they make a sandwich or a snack for themselves. In the summer, when we eat on the deck we use them, too.

Why do you need to cover stuff your microwaving?? As long as you don't over do it with the amount of time, its not going to explode... at least thats never happened to me.


And I rarely use paperplates, even durring parties. I feel their are harmful to the environment, plus I have a dishwasher, so I just fill it to the brim, and run it every few days.

Why do you need to cover stuff your microwaving?? As long as you don't over do it with the amount of time, its not going to explode... at least thats never happened to me.

I like my food HOT. It always explodes.

We almost never use them. I don't think I have any here, and I can't remember buying any in the last several years. If we barbeque or are eating outside for another reason I have plastic plates that I just wash. I dislike doing dishes as much as the next person, but I just never got in the habit of having paper plates on hand.

Someone mentioned microwaving. If I'm reheating something it comes out of the fridge it's in a lidded container, so I vent that. If I'm heating a plate of something I don't cover it. Never really thought about that before.

We hardly ever cover stuff in the microwave. When we do, I usually just use a paper towel. I do have those plastic tupperware things to cover with, I just forget about them. It would never have occurred to me to use a paper plate, though. I guess that's since I don't have them around, except for the stray leftover party ones (they come in packs of 8, and I always have to buy 16 when I just need 12).
