Do you read the obituaries?

She says she might be going by the funeral home tomorrow to see if its him.? Not sure what she plans on saying to his family, since she can't even remember if this is the person who coached our softball team some 35 odd years ago.

WTH????? :rotfl: I'm sorry, Judi, but this really struck me as funny. What's she going to do. Peek over the coffin and if it's not him go "oops, wrong person"?

She sounds like a headcase--poor thing.

I read the obits occasionally. When I read the paper, I scan them, which is only a few times a week. (unless I'm home from work)

My mom works in a funeral home, so golly gee she reads them MULTIPLE times a day:sad: I find this completely depressing. Not only does she tell me all the ones that are at her place, but others too..

Glad I did not continue in the family tradition:bitelip:

I scan the names to see if I know anyone

I read them. I am not originally from this area so I rarely know anyone in the obituaries. I like reading about people's lives. The worst was a woman who died in her seventies and the only thing that family could think to say about her was "She was a good cook." I know they may have been too stunned to come up with anything else, but it just struck me that I wanted to do more with my life than to be remembered for being a good cook. (Not that there's any chance of that happening!)

The best one was this man who worked in advertising for twenty years and almost died in a serious car accident. After the accident, he realized he didn't really like advertising and didn't want to keep on doing something he didn't like. With his wife's blessing, he enrolled in a clown college and became a clown for a few years. Then he got tired of that and he and his wife opened a gift shop. He did something else after that, but I can't remember. But I remember thinking that there was a man who made the most of his life and didn't settle for going to a boring job he hated every day.

I read them daily because I am a nurse so I like to see who died that I may have taken care of.

But I read them and that's it. I don't obsess over them.

I'm a nurse and I read them almost everyday to see if any of my patients have died. My family refers tot hem as the "Irish Sporting Page" and they read them everyday too. Some are interesting, some are heart warming and some are down right funny. I read one of a man whose name was pronounced "I'm an Icky" (Hyman Icke):rotfl2: He was so proud of that!!!!

I skim them looking for names that I know. I like to know if a friend that's not close enough to actually call and tell me loses a family member, so I can say the right things next time I see them, or even send a card if we're close enough.

I'm sure glad to hear other people do this. She's in the healthcare field, I never even thought of this angle, why she would read. Of course, she works in an OB/GYN office, so probably doesn't see many of her patients in the obits....

I also see the point of reading because you like history, or like reading the story of people's lives, even if you don't know them. I admit I find that interesting as well. I guess I just don't read them because they depress me, but not everyone feels that way, obviously.
