When you say the word, vehicle, do you pronounce the H? I grew up not pronouncing the H, then when we moved to Illinois, everyone pronounced it. Now I'm back in Buffalo, NY where we don't pronounce it, but i heard them pronounce it on a local car commercial!

How about you and where are you from?

I say it! I'm in Illinois too, and everyone I know pronounces it with the "H" in there.

where i roam from, my area was notorious for saying things differently.

some examples:

it's stead of saying something like, it's all gone,
we would say "the coffee all gone"

turn off the lights is often heard as outen the lights..

straighten up is redd up

and we pronounce our area as
"lan-kister"

haha oh yeah.
i'm from lancaster county, penna-state!! =]

I know this is going to be off topic...but 31 posts and two tags!

Color me impressed!

A little note on pronunciation from dictionary.com

Pronunciation note:
Because the primary stress in vehicle is on the first syllable, the  /h/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [h] Show IPA in the second syllable tends to disappear:  /ˈviɪkəl/[vee-i-kuhl]. A pronunciation with primary stress on the second syllable and a fully pronounced /h/[h] is usually considered nonstandard: /viˈhɪkəl/[vee-hik-uhl]. In the adjective vehicular, where the primary stress is normally on the second syllable, the /h/[h] is always pronounced.

we don't say 'vehicle' in these parts, just car

sorry couldn't resist;)

I wouldn't pronounce the "h" if it was me saying it

I say it with a soft H sound. Not vee-hick-el, but not vee-ick-el. Does that make any sense? Probably not.

I'm from NEPA.

I've never heard anybody say it without the H.

I knew just from your first few lines where you were from! :lmao: It's that old German.

A lot of people around here still say redd up. I haven't heard outen, but I've heard boughten and broughten.

Everywhere I have lived (TX and OK), it's pronounced vee-hickle. The h is pronounced, and there might be a minor emphasis on the "vee" part, or maybe no emphasis on any syllable.

More importantly, do you pronounce the S in Illinois? I'm from IL, and it's a big no-no, but I've come across way too many people who do. "oh, you're from I-L-L-I- NOISE, huh?"

And being a neighbor to Missouri, do you pronounce it Missouri or Missoura? Lots of people around here put an "a" on the end instead of an "i" (older people mostly.)

No S in Illinois, I say Missouri with the E sound on the end. So does my next door neighbor who is from St Louis.

soft h from NJ.

Here in TN, seems like H is pronounced.

Although I might be all mixed up. Thinking to hard on this has confused me, haha. I am thinking of a friend from WV who says vehicle all the time. She says it with a H.

I say it with a soft h sound. Southwest Ohio here.
