Do you prefer pizza from a chain or Mom and Pop place?

Tonight, DD12 wanted Domino's pizza. I haven't ordered from there in years, they used to be the bomb, but I grew tired of it.

Then I started going back to local pizza shop from my teenage years and have been going there for many years. The pizza just seems better.

I guess I am partial to my pizza place, because I could only eat half slice.

So do you have a favorite pizza place?

I don't like Domino's  Tolerate Pizza Hut. I make our own pizza dough every Friday but if we were to get pizza out I would go to a local pizza place.

Very rarely is a chain better than a mom and pop. Sure there are exceptions, but even the worst mom and pop is going to be better than the dreck at Dominos!

I live in NJ - we only eat at one of the dozens of local places (and every place has free delivery, and a weekly special with 2 pies for $16.00, and they're BIG).

It really depends upon your local area, and how each location makes the pizza. It really seems this is one major food item where the chain store are very inconsistent going for location to location. I've eaten some Dominos pizzas that have been horrible, really, really horrible.

On the other hand, our local Dominos has some of the best pizza in our area. It's funny how different people, using the same basic ingredients, have such drastically different results.

Our Pizza Hut and Papa Johns were so bad, they closed up. There is a local place that took over the Papa Johns location, but I haven't tried them, yet.

Mom & Pop place for me. Though every now and then, I love a good Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut. It's the cheese. But in no way, shape, or form would I ever say that Pizza Hut is "good."

Best pizza ever: Mac n Mancos in Ocean City. YUM!

We no longer have any mom & pop pizza places here. A few independent, smaller restaurants do make their own pizza but I have not been impressed.

As to the chains, I prefer Papa John's but one of my kids hates it.:confused3

For years I avoided the awful pizza that was at Dominos but they have a new recipe and it actually hasn't been bad. The garlic, herbed crust was pretty good (one time they put extra sea salt on the edge of the crust and it was YUMMY). But, sadly, they are inconsistent.

DH and I far prefer the local mom & pops, but the kids hate it so we don't get pizza from there very often. Dominos has gotten a bit better lately. I thought it tasted like cardboard for a while, but they changed their crust and it's really good now.

We don't have any mom and pops here. We generally do papa johns.

I love Papa Johns! I wish we had one here.

Amen.. with all of the wonderful mom/pops in NJ why would anyone eat anything else!!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:

It's all about the pizza oven. In my personal opinion, if it's cooked on a conveyor belt, it's crap. I can't stomach any of the chain places. Some were good years ago when they still used ovens (remember Little Caesar's and those black pans they used in their ovens?). Now they all have horrible crust with the modern cooking methods. I stick with those that still use pizza ovens. :thumbsup2

honestly, we prefer pizza hut. our local mom & pop pizza place, which everyone else LOVES, is gross, IMHO. they use WAAAAYYYY too much cheese and it just ruins the taste of the pizza for me. i'm more of a meat and sauce girl. now, OTOH, their pepperoni hoagies are TO DIE FOR!

It depends. If its just us, we will go with the mom and pops, but if we are feeding a crowd we usually get the Little Ceasers $5 ones or the Pizza Hut $10 ones. The large local ones are over $20 for a large, so its just too expensive when we get 5 or 6 to feed the kids friends.

I like mom and pop kind of places. My favorite in my area is Pizza Schmizza which is often called by NY-area-ers "the only pizza I can eat outside of NY"... Old Town Pizza is also good in town too, it's more Chicago deep dish and it's a TS restaurant, so Schmizza and OTP aren't too comparable really.

Whenever pizza is craved but the mom and pop places have closed for the night, Pizza Hut is the only one I can do.

There is not a single chain (Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa John's) that I would willingly eat at. They are all awful.

AFAIK, there aren't any "mom & pop" pizzarias here; I'm badly spoilt, having lived near Little Italy in San Diego for a long time, so if I did find a place here, they'd have alot to live up to

There's a chain here (AZ) called Papa Murphy's where they'll make the pizzas fresh to order & you can take them home to bake them, and it's actually really good. Not what I was used to, but still good. :thumbsup2

Mom and Pop for sure. We don't have a lot of the American chains nearby... I would say the biggest two in our city are Pizza Pizza (which is decent) and Pizza Nova (which I prefer). However we have an amazing independent pizza joint nearby that makes a delicious pizza so we always order from there. Living in a big city there are lots of choices, so I'm pretty picky. I like thin crusts with not much cheese and tons of veggies. Mmmmmm.:goodvibes:thumbsup2

Well...I will start this off saying I am a pizza snob. I grew up in Brooklyn! No one makes pizza like NYC!! Now, the chains, Dominos and Pizza hut, in my opinion are NOT pizza. They are dough topped with sauce and cheese and put on a conveyer belt... umm... thats not pizza.

I like a good slice of real pizza from a pizzeria. We have some decent places here in NJ...but still not like NY, it's the water.. same with bagels. They are ok out here.. but NY is just so much better..

Flame away... I am ok with that...
