Between the two which would you choose a cruise to? Don't know a lot about either so hoping to hear from folks who have been. Thanks!

Key West 1,000 over!! Going to miss not going there on our Fantasy westerns:sad1:

Ha! 100% opposite opinions. Can anyone share why?

Love, love, love Cozumel! Loved Chankannab park, it was so beautiful there and we could snorkel and then swim in the pool, great place for all 3 of our kids and us. Very relaxing and beautiful! Everyone there was very friendly and it's a cheap, quick ride to get there from the port. Dying to go back there! Have heard Nachi Cocum is an amazing place too, but it was not in our budget :(
Key west was ok, we did walk to the Southernmost Point and did get Key Lime pie, other than that we were not impressed.

Another vote for Key West. Top 5 reasons:

5. You don't need to take a taxi into town.
4. You can rent an electric golf cart and tour the entire area on your own to visit landmarks, museums etc.
3. I feel much safer in Key West.
2. 50 cent oysers on the half shell at Turtle Krall's.

And the Number 1 reason I like Key West:

1. SLOPPY JOE's :woohoo:

Key West is boring we are beach people so Cozumel works out great for my family plenty of nice beaches, good shopping and cheap drinks :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Just to confuse things...we liked both and would go back to either!

We love touring local historical sites, and really enjoyed our tour of Key West and our visit to President Truman's "Little White House". We also enjoyed our tour of the island Cozumel and our visit to some ruins. We thought the people we met along the way were very nice.

We didn't feel unsafe in either place, but we've been "urban dwellers" most of our lives.

In all fairness - this article focuses primarily on Puerta Vallarta and Mazatlan - both on the Pacific coast where it is well known that there is increased violence fueled by the drug trade.

Cozumel is mentioned only once - and it is as follows:

"(I have) been coming to Mexico since 1970, never had a problem. Have owned a home in Cozumel for 6 years. My wife and I live here winter and spring, then summer and fall in Upstate NY. I've told many of my NY friends it's safer here than going a NY mall on a weekend. If you don't go looking for trouble it won't find you. But don't let the word get out too much, we don't want our beautiful little island to change."

I can tell you that I have visited Cozumel at least 10 times since 1994 - and not once have I even been remotely close to being involved in a scenario in which I felt unsafe. In fact - it has been my experience that the Cozumelenos are by and large very friendly towards visitors and understand the importance of tourism to their local economy.

Two words.....Mr. Sancho's.

Visited this beach club in Cozumel on our 6/9 Western and had a great time. Beautiful, clean beach with tons of activities and a cool saltwater pool with a swim-up bar. We'd definitely go back there.

Key West is alright, I guess...it's just that when I go on a DCL cruise, I don't want to go to an American port...to me the whole point is to get away.

Key West....true that there is not a ton to do, but it is clean and safe.

Cozumel--don't get off the beaten tourist path at all. It is filthy and doesn't feel at all safe. There are serious crime issues, but they don't tend to be attacks on tourists who are uninjured and functional. The best thing about Cozumel is that there is a Starbucks with internet right at the pier.

We prefer Cozumel so much that we do a 2 week land vacation there every year. They do not have serious crime issues. Mexico is huge and the area that the US govt is flagging isn't even near Cozumel and not even directly across to the mainland. PLEASE don't lump in one area with the whole country Things like this unfairly hurt their tourism. It's thousands of miles away. It's like telling tourists not to visit WDW because there is crime in LA. We do get off the main drag and are fine with it. The East side is gorgeous. The diving and snorkeling is superb. There are wonderful restaurants. The people are warm and loving. The south side has great beaches.

Cozumel hands down. For the water sports and beaches. Our preference.
Key West has plenty of petty crime. It is the only place in Florida I have ever had my car broken into on a well travelled public street in daylight. Pickpockets abound. To be fair we are not as familiar with Cozumel as we spend our time on the water diving or on the beach.
So whereever you are it pays to be aware of your surroundings and keep track of your belongings.
Key West has some great places to visit for tourists; The Hemingway House, Audubon House, Sloppy Joe's, Mel Fisher's Pirate Museum, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and tons of shops and other restuarants that cater to tourism.

Cozumel all the way. Beaches much better, water great, good mexican food and cheap!!!:thumbsup2

Cozumel hands down!

Believe it or not, I have felt safer in Cozumel than in Key West.

Key West 2009... rented an electric car on my own. Got off the ship and called the company to pick us up. Within 10 minutes, an electric car pulls up asking if we were there to pick up an electric car. We get in... except we figure out it's not the same company. The company we booked through told us that happened a lot -- other companies hijacking customers.

In Cozumel, we have booked on our own a dolphin excursion and a day at Paradise Beach. Both have been fantastic, and some of our best cruise days. Taxi stand outside the cruise port is clearly labeled (with signs to get to it). The rates were clearly marked and very reasonable. And the excursions themselves were phenomenal!
