Do you prefer Boma or Jiko?

I have eaten at Boma twice the last two visits and love it, but am thinking of trying Jiko. Those of you who have eaten at both, does one stand out over the other? I know Jiko is a little more upscale and a sit-down dinner where Boma is buffet style, but what about the food? Is it that much better at Jiko? What is a not-to-be-missed meal at Jiko? Also, I will be doing deluxe dining so money will luckily not be an obstacle :thumbsup2

We've only done breakfast at Boma, but our dinner at Jiko was to die for!! We both got the filet with mac and cheese. And the Crispy Savannah rolls...I would go back just for those!!

I like both Boma and Jiko - though as you said, totally different experiences. Jiko is a nice calm restaurant, great service; Boma is loud and crazy with people.

I go to Boma every visit, but I've only been to Jiko once (loved it though). I had the filet with mac and cheese and it was great. Also had some flatbreads and a really good salad with a carrot dressing. Overall, very good experience.

My dd(23) and I enjoyed Jiko very much. It was quiet and the food was wonderful. I had the filet and she had the wreak fish. Hers had a beautiful presentation. We have only been to Boma for breakfast, we do enjoy it though.

We've been to both, and both DH & I prefer Jiko over Boma. I don't mind one buffet during a trip, but Boma for us was just too filling. Waaaay too many interesting foods to try -- ya' had to roll us outta the place after dinner.

Like others have mentioned, too, Boma's a bit chaotic.

If we had to pick, we'd pick Jiko. Overall I think the food on our plates was just more delicious at Jiko.

Now if I could have the hummus station at Boma mixed with the steak/mac & cheese from Jiko in a non-buffet setting, I'd be in heaven :cloud9:

Dont really care for either but if I had to choose it would be Jiko

Jiko is a fine dining experience. Nice quiet surroundings, excellent service and food. Boma is a buffet with all the noise that goes along with that, but a multitude of choices on what to eat.

Which one to go to depends on how you want to eat. We do both, but Jiko is the better experience IMHO.

This is what I'm afraid of missing about Boma...the hummus station and the soup station! I love the coconut curry seafood stew and the butternut squash soup. But that filet with the mac and cheese looks soooooo good. I think I'll be adventurous and try Jiko this time :) Plus the kid's desserts look pretty good too! DD hasn't really cared for Boma's desserts in the past!

Jiko...hands down. And this coming from someone who is also a Boma fan.

If you are wanting a nice, quiet, upgraded dining atmosphere, Jiko wins.

If you are wanting a more adventurous variety of foods, Boma wins.

Jiko has a shrimp curry stew served over coconut rice that's to die for. :thumbsup2

woohoo! That sounds delicious! That will definitely have to be my appetizer then! I wish the AKL wasn't so far from the CR, because they have such great restaurants there! I also want to try Sanaa as well...that will have to be my next trip!

It's an entree, actually, and it's a *ton* of food.

I have done both, first Boma, 4 days after, Jiko. The soups al Boma were amaizing. The coconut stew is the best soup I ever had in my entire life.

So, what happened, was, that when I went to Jiko, I had the cheese plate and the filet mignon, and the only thing in my mind was, Why am I here, when I could be eating the soup, I am missing the soup ,and I am leaving tomorrow without having the soup again. Up Scale restaurants are all over the globe, but that soup....only at Boma

pd.- Sorry if my english is not that good, but I am from a Tropical place, where Coconuts grow, and we dont know how to make that soup!!!!

I am really curious about all these people who rave about the coconut curry seafood stew at Boma (very exotic) and then go to Jiko for filet over mac and cheese, easily the least exotic thing on the menu!

When you could be having this:

Swahili curry shrimp with tomatoes, peas, and artichoke hearts, served over coconut rice. Easily the best entree I've ever had anywhere in my life.

I was going to ask you for a picture! That looks delicious...I assume there are plenty of shrimp? I agree about trying something exotic, that's what I love about Boma is getting to try African food. But everyone raves about the filet, so I tend to go with what other people recommend...thanks for going against the grain and tantalizing my taste buds! (I wish there was a smiley face that drooled!) :lmao:

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: This totally cracked me up! I know it's late and time for bed, but this is what I'm thinking while I'm looking at my Boma ressie I am about to cancel..."my soup, my hummus, the zebra domes!"...but now I see that pic of the swahili curry shrimp over coconut rice, and I think I'm okay (but what if I miss my soup!)

Oh, there were a ton of shrimp ... well, maybe not a ton, but they were really big so there were certainly plenty of them (look how tiny my fork looks and how big the shrimp are compared to it--this was an ENORMOUS bowl), but the beauty of the dish is that each ingredient had an exotic taste all its own, and any two or more together combined to make a new exotic taste. So the shrimp were good, and the peas were good but didn't taste like the shrimp, and shrimp and peas were good together but didn't taste like either the shrimp or peas... It was less a dish and more an experience. Seriously, it's going to be hard to resist ordering the exact same thing next time!

I think something as rich as zebra domes would have been too much after the curry stew, I had the lemon curd with pomegranate and blueberries.

The "Taste of Africa" appetizer includes hummus, though, I think.
