Do you or your husband have a "cool" job?

I think my new job is cool. I work for an auction company; we auction off the contents of model homes when the builder has sold through. It's a lot of fun.

That's an awesome job! But, I couldn't do it....I be spending my paychecks on all the cool furniture and fixtures/accessories that they put in those model homes. They're always decorated so nicely!!

I am a Crime Scene Investigator for my county. Its cool being at high profile crime scenes and knowing more than other people about the cases. I also love bing on the news about once a week. :teeth:

Both DH & I have cool jobs.
DH has his own business. Own hours, own boss, good money. The flexibility is perfect for 'family time.'
I also have a cool job as a health educator for a non-profit. My hours are flexible as well, meet community persons, and have a variety of duties related to work. No day is the same and the job is not a 9-5 desk job. I love being able to help others that may not otherwise be able to help themselves. Bringing education and awareness and helping people lead healthier lives is a great job to go to everyday.

My husband has sort of a cool job. He's a railroad conductor. He gets to ride the rails for a living - pretty much something every little boy thinks is cooler than cool. ;)

I have a variety of jobs. SAHM most of the time. I am also a member of SAG and AFTRA and pick up work on film/TV projects that are somewhere nearby, sometimes as 'background', sometimes getting paid to actually "speak" :earseek: !

That is one of my dreams- to be in background scene in a movie. How do you get a job like that??

I have a very uncool job and very uncool paychecks. Blech.

DH has a very cool job IMHO. He's a full time writer who supports our family with his books. He's very fortunate to have success as a writer.

I've just begun a new career in special education which I LOVE! I think its also pretty cool... but not too lucrative! :flower:

It is very tempting! But what I've learned so far, is that whatever you miss out on one time, will crop up at another auction. And sometimes, you can get great deals. I got new mattresses/box springs for all my kids for $40 each.

That's very cool! What sort of books does your DH write? My mother is also a writer. She writes historical fiction for middle grade readers. She currently has 14 books out. She spends a lot of her time traveling all over the country speaking to writing groups, library groups, etc. Next week she'll be in NYC speaking the New York Library Association. I'm jealous. :rolleyes1

That's what my son wants to be! Are you a field investigator? Or do you do the lab work??

I drive a huge tow truck and when people "make a mess" :rotfl2: I get to go clean it up. I get to flip over rolled over tractor trailers. :rotfl: Only cool if you are not in the vehicle or in the traffic behind it. :rolleyes1 :confused3

Wow, some of you have really neat careers. :) I wish I had read this thread back when I was in high school - I might have figured out something to major in in college. I'll go back to finish a degree one day. ;) Maybe I'll even be inspired by one of you from this thread! :sunny:

I think my hubby has a neat job - he's a 3d computer artist. He's working for a video game company that's developing an online fantasy type RPG game. He designs and builds the different types of armor that the characters wear in the game. It's freelance work so he gets to stay at home with me and the kids. I love having him around, it's so much easier than being a single SAHM.

Edit: I forgot, my DH had to remind me, that I once had a really cool, magical job. I don't like to spoil the magic by talking about it very much but I once worked at WDW in the character dept. ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo

Chereya :)

I interned at SNL in college and worked there as a PA for almost a year. Pretty cool. Then I got married and moved to MN. Now I'm a copy editor. DH is a medical resident, which I think is even cooler. But I'm blinded by love.

Well, I have a Master's Degree in theatre, but that and $4 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

You're in Canada, right? There's a *lot* of production work that goes on up there, depending on where you live. Plus you seem to be bi-lingual - that's a plus.

Hmmmm...I would find out if there are any casting directors or talent agents in your area - look in the phone book or Google your area & casting directors/talent agents/whatever. Have someone take your photo with their digital camera(do NOT use a "glamour"/mall photo place). Put together a resume, even if you don't have a lot of acting experience, with your skills and (VERY IMPORTANT) current contact information. Then go in with your pictures(that really do look like you), tell them you're just starting out and really *really* want to work. Take local acting classes - once you get acquainted with folks, you'll be able to pick up "pre-production" news or find out if any projects are in your area and need bodies. Be available at a moment's notice - sometimes you'll get called the day or even the night before and sometimes the same *day* for a shoot. Find out if there are any production(acting plus the 'backstage' jobs) hotline/websites for your area - check them out *often*.

hope that helps.

<-- Wants another cool job.

I always wanted to be the "Professional Driver on closed course" guy that you see in all the car ads!

Or an instructor at the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

I'm a SAHM so pretty much no for me, but my husband's job is pretty cool. He works for the National Marine Fisheries Service regulating certain fisheries (Swordfish,Tuna, Marlin). He's constantly trying to balance the interests of the fishermen and the preservation of the fish stocks, but manages to get sued by fishermen and environmentalists alike! Nobody's ever happy. He just tries to be fair and do what's right in the long run.

My dad has the coolest job ever. He works as a civilian contractor to a government agency and travels to foreign countries setting up computer networks to screen for terrorists at airports and border sites. He's been to numerous countries in Asia and Africa and is heading to Katmandu next month. He gets to travel first class and has racked up over 500,000 frequent flier miles. He even got sent to do CIA advanced weapons training, since he has traveled to certain dangerous countries like Pakistan and Iraq. He brings back some interesting stuff, too.

My DW and I both work for the FAA at an Enroute Center(not an airport). She is an Air Traffic Controller that is now doing Q/A work, and I am a Systems Specialist. Cool...I don't know, but we like. It feeds our aviation jones daily. :teeth:

Just revisiting this thread and this caught my eye...

When we lived back in WA state my dh and his twin brother were cast as extras in movies like Fontaine and one with Sly Stallone that I can't recall just now. They did this for a few years in Seattle and found a lot of work. Their agent worked out of his home and did a lot of business.

They did exactly as what you suggested in fact and found lots of work over the years.

Go for it! :goodvibes
