Do you or your husband have a "cool" job?

Some people think my job is cool because I work in TV. It seemed cool to me when I started, but not any more. And I could not possibley be less affected by meeting a "celebrity", which does happen several times a year. I'm bored as can be at that job.

DH and I have boring jobs, but my dad owned a liquor store.

Oh, those were the days....

Well, I worked at the Maintenance Base at Epcot for a year. It is sort of command central for the park. We controlled the event schedules (programs that turned music off, lights up, fountains down for live preformances). We had control over park lighting, fountains, and a few shows such as Food Rocks. We tracked all the ride downtimes, and were in charge of handling all the maintenance requests.

It was a great job. It really helps that I am a Disney fanatic, you really had to know each show and ride inside and out. It was also neat to hear all the strange things happening throughout the park. Oh the stories I could tell!

Sadly, that job is no longer there. I still work for engineering in a different location, but nothing interesting happens. Just a bunch of people clogging toilets and clueless on how to work the air conditioning.

I think my job is cool. I teach acting, playwriting, dance, script analyis, design for the theater, etc. for kids from K-12th grades. I also direct children's and youth theater productions. It is all part of the "Kids College" program run through our local university. We do afternoon and weekend classes year round and we produce four full main stage productions each year starring the kids- two musicals in the summer and two plays in the winter. I direct all of those productions.

These kids take these classes very, very seriously. They are hard workers and are very dedicated to the theater. Many of them have been involved since they started school. Most of them are headed toward college theater programs and then, hopefully, a career in the theater. So, working with them is a real pleasure. My high school group is working on material that is difficult for lots of college students. In fact, several universities in our area use our students in their college productions!

We also take one major trip a year with the 8th-12th grade students. Last summer, we spent 10 days in New York. We saw a Broadway show every night, took acting and dance classes, attended audition workshops, etc - in addition to all the typical NYC tourist stuff. It was a great experience for them! This summer, we're headed to Disney World!! We have some really special things lined up for the trip - a backstage tour at LaNouba, an acting class and media production class at the studios, discussion sessions with Disney performers, etc. I can't wait.

The best thing about my job is that I totally set my own hours. I schedule all the classes, productions, etc. around what works best for me. I don't have any set office hours or anything. I love it! I honestly can't think of anything I'd rather be doing.

I think, regardless of whether it's a "cool" job, getting to work at something you truly enjoy is one of the best things in the world!

Most people think I have a cool job because the company I work for buys our employees lunch every day. There are 11 employees, plus we feed clients when they come in. We BBQ, order Chinese, pizza or what ever we feel like for that day. Sometimes, "What's for lunch?" is the hardest question of the day.

We produce TV/Radio commercials up in New England. We also produce interactive CDs/DVDs. I also like to write radio commercials.

People know us best for producing (not writing) the Bernie & Phyl's Furniture and Christmas Tree Shop commercials. Most people will never see those ads, people in MA, and NH probably see them too much :rotfl2:

haha. yeah, no kidding! they're always on tv.

I'm not so sure others would think I have a cool job but I sure do. I work for a non-profit in NYC that provides housing, vocational training and day treatment services to homeless men and women. I was hired at the start of this year to create a volunteer services department and things are going great. INCREDIBLY busy but GREAT! Three days off since the first week of September but I love every minute of it. What other job pays you to meet new people virtually every day, that all have the same commitment of helping others that are less fortunate?

I left the corporate world behind me a few years ago and haven't regretted the change since!

Hmm, dh's would seem "cooler" than mine. He's a pilot. I'm a social worker(part time)
Dh job also has much more perks!

i'm going to be starting my job soon as a technician in a biochemistry lab that does work on proteins. at some point i'll get to work with x-ray crystallography. i worked over the summer at a paint company. i got to use a spray paint gun, which i thought was the coolest thing ever!

I'm an analyst in a biochemistry lab, too! Our lab is designing custom proteins and I do all of the cloning and DNA sequencing for them. I guess it is not THAT cool, but I do use equipment that costs more than twice as much as my house!

Most people would probably think my DH's job is cool. He's a newspaper sportswriter covering Duke basketball and football. And he also covers some golf and other sports. The year before last he was at the Super Bowl, then the final four and then the Masters. Coach K and Dick Vitale and Matthew Lawrence know him by name. But he's not a Duke fan, and the traveling gets to be a bit much. Its nice when he goes cool places like Hawaii (I went on that one) and he'll be in Boston this year. But he is always working. Even on off days work intrudes.

Biochemists unite! (I'm only a temp though.)

Most people probably think my job is the "uncoolest" but I don't think so! I'm a librarian. Not a stereotype, bun in the hair, "shusshing" librarian, but a COOL one! :rotfl:

DH by day is a collector, but by night is a costumer and his stuff is COOL. Check it out: www.sithcamaro.com

sounds cool! i'll be helping with designing proteins too (maybe, i'm not really sure yet... but i think so). i'm always afraid i'm going mess up those expensive machines!

My DH has to travel every week for his line of work (Computer/Systems Analyst), which is :guilty: . He's an independent consultant/in business for himself, which means he has to go where the work is. *BUT*, because he travels so much, we get to take more trips to WDW. Sometimes our plane trip is paid-for(FF miles), our hotel is paid-for(frequent stay points at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress), our rental car will be paid-for on one upcoming trip(frequent user credits from National)...so all that is kind of :teeth: .

I have a variety of jobs. SAHM most of the time. I am also a member of SAG and AFTRA and pick up work on film/TV projects that are somewhere nearby, sometimes as 'background', sometimes getting paid to actually "speak" :earseek: !
Plus I do a lot of volunteering. Last year I was the Troop Leader for my DD's Girl Scout Troop. This year I have been reuniting families with their loved ones who are missing because of Hurricane Katrina, working with my DD's Confirmation Class and helping out the Choir Boosters at her school. (DD is in the Advanced Women's Choir). I also try to volunteer every so often for one of the various union committees.
A couple of years back I read to an entire 2nd Grade(about 100 kids) every two weeks as part of (SAG's) BookPals group.
Plus ever since September 11th, I also have made it part of my mission in life to carry a Red Cross certification in First Aid and (some type of)CPR. Right now I have the First Aid cert, plus a double certification in CPR/AED(Automatic External Defribrillator).

agnes!

DH and I have boring jobs also. He's a project specialist for a HUGE company and makes plastic for cars, CD's, etc. I'm a tech writer at a software development company...oh joy!

DH does computer work... usually support calls. I sit there amazed how he can sit on a couch watching TV nowhere near a computer and rattle off screens and error messages to a user who needs help. He's on the couch drinking a beer "Well, that first screen is this right?" Takes another sip, and the error message is blah, blah, blah, right? and so on. I am such a visual learner I need to see the things I am talking about...

However, not very cool. Its with a major health care insurance company though.

I am now working with special ed high schoolers. Lately I've been working with severly handicapped students. Our local high school has a huge school to work iniative for these students, so they have tons of job/vocational training for them. The job training they give these students is tremendous. I'm right now in a multi grade, multi handicapped classroom and its extremely interesting to see how these students are getting trained to work in a warehouse, grocery store, or factory setting.

I think my new job is cool. I work for an auction company; we auction off the contents of model homes when the builder has sold through. It's a lot of fun.
