I put ex, but.....
Saying you're an ex smoker is like saying you're an ex alcoholic. I started smoking in college (tried it before but only had one once in a while in HS), quit for 5 years, started again and then smoked for 12 years, quit again almost 4 years ago. I was never over a pack a day but I was consistant.
I could pick one up right now, and suck it down without a cough.
I will always want a cigarette, in certain situations I have to mentally talk myself out of a cigarette. However I know that I'm healthier without them.
I don't smoke, but I will always be addicted to tobacco.
ETA: I quit cold turkey the first time, the last time, I got really sick (virus then bronchitis) right before my 40th birthday. I was sick for three weeks. By the time I was well enough to smoke I had already gone through the withdrawl and was too miserable being sick for it to matter. I figured that was the time to quit so I did. I had my last cigarette, on my 40th birthday.
