Thanks. We are going to be at EPCOT two days, so I'll try to hit it using the virtual queue the first day and see how that goes.
Haven't been to WDW since 2012 so don't know what the Flight of Passage queue is like either.
The virtual queue isn’t anything to write home about in my opinion. It’s the preshow and the ride where all the action and good stuff happens in my opinion

We used the VQ (LL) line twice earlier this month, but both times the line was moving so fast that we didn't have time to enjoy it! There are a lot of exhibits showing details of the planet, the space ships, hierarchy of officers, etc., and actually I do hope that some day I'll be able to go through that line slowly and enjoy it! It was obviously designed to keep people entertained, like the FoP queue.
I can't use the word "impressive" to describe the queue.
Is there more to it? Yes
Is it anything remotely as impressive as Flights of Passage? Not even close. What you miss there is major.
Here, it's extremely minor. There are small parts of it added to the ILL queue. You move through both ILL and VQ lines so fast right now you'll likely not see much no matter what line you use.

Exactly. I have been fortunate to ride several times and on some of the rides have moved slow enough to explore the queue fairly well and still nothing to write home about. I do wonder if there are any interactive elements to it. I've actively avoided learning too much about what exactly MB+ does do so I am surprised when I use it for the first time. But there are some areas in the queue that look like it may be interactive. Honestly no idea, just something that struck me walking through.
At any rate, Preshow, which both ILL and VQ do, is where the information really starts.
Not missing much. The entry room, the big circle, is a few audio clips that kind of explain the premise of the franchise (completely irrelevant to the ride). The dioramas and stuff are well done, but I don't get it.
I've never seen the movie, so maybe it's going over my head.

I think knowing the characters from the movies helps you get the personalities you experience in the ride's story but seeing the movies doesn't make a huge difference because this happens after the movie's timeline.
The most entertaining part of the queue isn't related to the movie. It's from the interview with Peter Quill where he talks about looking forward to his making his first return to Epcot since he was a kid. I won't give away the funny part for those who haven't been through yet.
