"Do You Mind?" - Disney Adventures with Teens August Trip Report

Whoa! That is a huge to do list! I love planning ADR's! They are so much fun. In fact too much as I called one too many times to change things around and now DH is covering his ears and singing loudly to himself everytime I mention them. :confused3

-Becca-

Well, after much research, analysis, discussion, revisiting, etc., here are the ADRs I plan to try to get tomorrow morning:

Saturday - Fantasmic Package, Hollywood Brown Derby, DHS, 7:00pm?
Sunday - Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge (request seating at "the cooking place"), 7pm
Monday - California Grill at Contemporary Resort, finishing up right about 10pm, so we can watch Wishes from our table, 8:30pm
Tuesday - Raglan Road, Pleasure Island (after La Nouba), 8pm
Wednesday - OHana at Polynesian, 7pm
Thursday - bluezoo at Swan (or Dolphin?), 7pm
Friday - Whispering Canyon Cafe, Wilderness Lodge, 7pm

I haven't given the times too much thought. I think 7pm is a nice time to give us time to get from wherever we are to wherever we need to be (including a stop and clean-up at the hotel, if necessary). We will probably arrive 10-30 minutes early for each reservation so we can walk around the resorts or surrounding area.

Can't make reservations for surfing until 90 days out.

Can't make reservations for La Nouba until Thursday (I think).

I think that's it for now. I'll report back tomorrow on whether we got what we wanted. I think the toughest one might be the California Grill. If they don't have a time close to what we want, I might switch that one to Thursday or Friday night, hoping for more success.

As for the To Do List, here's an update:
:thumbsup2 * Work with Katie to create our rough daily itinerary (not much help from Katie, but I worked on it)
:thumbsup2 * Use the TGM and UG crowd calendar for the above (why can't these two agree? :confused3 )
:thumbsup2 * Revisit ADR selections (I don't think I changed anything after all that! :rotfl:
:thumbsup2 * Match ADR selections to appropriate days based on our itinerary Kind-of goes with the above.
:thumbsup2 * Research - can we make surf lesson and MK tour reservations tomorrow too? (Nope! 90 days out :sad2: But that gives Caitlin time to decide if she wants to surf.)
* Make a list of items we need for DDBFF and discuss with her Mom

Non-vacation to-do items for today:
* Get VIN and prepare to register and insure Katie's car tomorrow
:thumbsup2 * Grocery shopping (Don't you hate it?)
* Bed Bath and Beyond - pick up a couple of things with my Christmas gift cards (Didn't make it :guilty: )
* Clean out a couple drawers (Nope)
:thumbsup2 * Program new phones and record ans machine message
:thumbsup2 * Put away Christmas gifts
* Order Metromint. I love this stuff and I order it by the case online. (I guess it can wait.)
:thumbsup2 * Order some sandals and flip flops from Glass & Powder's 50% off sale. My favorite boardshop, and my friends own it. (They were all out of my size of all sandals, but we ordered some T-shirts, sunglasses and snowboard gear)
:thumbsup2 * Help DH and DD decide if they will join our friends on a spring break snowboarding trip to NC. (I think they have decided not to go.)

Also got a few other things done today. PetSmart and Old Navy with Katie. Cooked ginger chicken for dinner and made the meatloaf for tomorrow night. It smells awesome! Paid some bills, reconciled some accounts. All that and I didn't even get up until 11am after a very late night out last night. I feel productive.

I finally joined this site and all I can say is WOW! I will start posting my own blog soon, but probably not today, although I'm tempted. I have many other things on my 2-do list for today. Anyway, I love reading all of your plans. And again, I say "Whew"! Maybe, even "Wheweeeeeee!!!!"
TTYL
Great! Welcome. Let me know when you've got yours started and I'd like to see it.

Susan, that's a great todo list!!!! maybe you'll get farther through yours then i did on mine...
Thank you! It was a great idea you had to post your to do list. :worship: You're quite an inspiration!

Very productive!:thumbsup2 I would love to take surfing lessons at Typhoon Lagoon.....I'm jealous, have fun! Good luck with your ADR's hope you get all you want! Congrats on the numbers going down on the scale, thats AWESOME! Keep up the good work!:goodvibes
After researching the surf lessons all day today, I can't find a negative review. Because of all of our history with surfing and watersports, I am sure we are going to do this. Not sure if DD and DDBFF will surf or not. DD wants to, but won't do it without BFF. Thanks also for the congrats. SB Diet is working for me. I really like it because there's nothing to count. I have truly lost my sugar cravings. I am down 8.5 lbs, even with a couple of back slides, but I am completely happy with the progress. I would like to lose another 13.5 lbs before this trip, or before summer, if possible!

Greetings, neighbor! We love Austin (don't hate me, I'm not your typical Dallas-ite). Your pre-trip report is fantastic! :)
Hey there neighbor in the north! We don't hate Dallas-ites. You know Austinites - we don't hate anyone! I have never seen such a laid-back city. We love it. Thanks for the compliments. And thanks for joining.

Whoa! That is a huge to do list! I love planning ADR's! They are so much fun. In fact too much as I called one too many times to change things around and now DH is covering his ears and singing loudly to himself everytime I mention them. :confused3

I have been so looking forward to tomorrow for so long. I am excited that it's almost here. It's like Santa for grown-ups! :lmao:

Well, :santa: has come and gone. There's good news and bad news. The good news is that I got reservations at every restaurant I wanted. The bad news is they aren't all the days/times we wanted.

So here's what I wanted and What I got:

Saturday - Fantasmic Package, Hollywood Brown Derby, DHS, 7:00pm? - bluezoo 8pm
Sunday - Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge (request seating at "the cooking place"), 7pm - Jiko 7pm (forgot to request seating)
Monday - California Grill at Contemporary Resort, finishing up right about 10pm, so we can watch Wishes from our table, 8:30pm - California Grill 7:40pm
Tuesday - Raglan Road, Pleasure Island (after La Nouba), 8pm - Brown Derby Fantasmic Package 4:30pm
Wednesday - OHana at Polynesian, 7pm - [Nothing yet - holding for Raglan Road]
Thursday - bluezoo at Swan (or Dolphin?), 7pm - 'Ohana 7pm
Friday - Whispering Canyon Cafe, Wilderness Lodge, 7pm - Whispering Canyon Cafe 7pm

I'll update with more details later. I can't believe they book up so quickly!!

NEXT UP: ADR DEBRIEF - YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANThttp://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=23145938&posted=1#post23145938http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=23145938&posted=1#post23145938http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=23145938&posted=1#post23145938

Holy cow, that's crazy that you had to rearrange times/days booking that far out! I booked around 50 days before arrival and got everything I wanted. Guess it just depends on when you're going. :confused3

Keep trying! I bet you can get things the way you want them later.

Well here I am, finally. I've had so much trouble surfing to get here, I need a vacation......DisneyWorld, here I come.

After reading all the meal events, I know that I'm glad I started the SBD two weeks ago. I'm going to have to lose 50 lbs. to make room for all the goodies.

Well, you asked for me to blog along with your comments to help you make a memory book at some point in the future. So here goes. I may just make some comments now and more later. I'm going to try to respond to all of these three pages you have already written.

First, let me say that the apple didn't fall far from this tree. You are reminding me of how I spent hours planning every trip we took when you and your sister were kids.

I have one request...please save all of my blogs for my "future book" that everyone tells me to write.

Perhaps the best way to do this is for me to go to each of your previous postings and respond to them individually. So look for that to come.

I agree that journaling this is a good idea. I so regret not keeping a journal (it was called a diary in my day) throughout my life. I do still have one I kept in HS. It's fun to read. I even listed what I wore to school each day so I wouldn't repeat the same outfit unless it was a special day when look-alike outfits were planned for ball games. I think I wanted my peers to think I came from a wealthy family and that I had closets full of clothes. The truth was that my dad worked in a factory, my mom worked in the stock room of the local dimestore, we lived on a very small chicken farm, and I shared a closet with my younger sister!
What does this have to do with Disney? Who knows? Fill in your own answer. Be my guest. Oh, wow, a Disney reference! In my later, "wealthier" years, I did get to see Beauty and The Beast on Broadway. Perhaps, more on that later.

Now my comments re: Cast and Crew

There are some omissions in the descriptions of the above.

First, Susan. As her mom, I feel I have the right to add more adjectives for her. (After all, I did carry her in my womb for nine Looooooooooong months. actually, nine and a half = the ONLY time she has ever been slow to do something planned in her life, but not the ONLY time she has ever been LATE!)
Back to the adjectives: long, long, beautiful legs; absolutely alluring blue eyes; very, very intelligent; honest; trustworthy; sportswoman trying to learn grace on the dance floor; compassionate; ultimate pet lover; thoughtful mother, wife, sister and daughter; and more.

Second, Chris/Dude. well-built body w/o steroids, athletic, hard working, patient (has to be since he's in my family), also very intelligent, honest, trustworthy and thoughtful. And most important to me a good husband and great stepfather.

Third, Katie. What can I say? I'm the proud grandmother and she is the firstborn of my firstborn. She is my heart! I don't know if Susan planned to honor me by naming Katie, but I kinda believe in karma. You see when I was pregnant with Susan, her dad would not even consider the possibility of having a daughter. However, I secretly hoped for a baby girl. So while he was planning to name the baby after himself, I was planning to name her Katherine Jane. Through a series of events that occurred while I was pregnant, when she popped out with female "plumbing", her dad told me that I had my own "Susan Jane" and that is how her name came about. And when, Katie came along and Susan named her Katherine, I took it as a tribute to what I wanted to call my firstborn daughter.

Katie has so many of her mother's characteristics, if she wasn't so petite, they could pass for sisters. She has the long lovely legs and drop dead gorgeous eyes. She is also very athletic, but much more graceful than her mom. She is a good student taking many AP courses and maintaining a very high GPA. She has a theatrical past, having performed in several Austin Children's Musical Productions and has even sung the National Anthem at the local professional baseball game. And I think she loves me ALMOST as much as I love her. We have a good time together when I go to Austin or when she come to Memphis. And, thank heaven for email, IMs, and cell phones!

Next, me. Come on now, Susan! Could you find a more unflattering picture of me? That was taken on last June's cruise and makes me look like an inflated balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade instead of the tired grandma that I was at that point. After all, I was recovering from parasailing, dolphin kissing, shopping, multiple Bingo games, numerous plays on the slot machines, and just a few pina coladas!
Here is what I REALLY look like: just refer back to Susan's sister's picture. Joann looks like I did when I was younger with the exception that I had straight hair and hazel brown/green eyes. And as far as I'm concerned, I still look like that!!! I have no idea who the person in the mirror is and for some reason when a picture is taken of me, the results always has that strange caloried challenged white haired woman in them. She ALWAYS gets in front of me!!!!

Now for my comments re: The Crew

Joann, my younger daughter, is a wonderful person, too. In fact, I don't think there is another mother who is prouder of her daughters than I. Both of my girls have matured into beautiful, intelligent, loving, compassionate women. And they're leaders of their own packs. Susan is a Partner in her CPA Firm and Joann is an Assistant Principal in an elementary school. What better proof of their leadership skills!!

Susan achieved her success through trials and tribulations that she can share if she wishes. All I can say is "Well, done!"

Joann, too, had many hurdles in her path. It's hard for me to remember all of them even though I jumped each hurdle by her side. Through all her hard work, the rewards are many; especially her hubby, newly teen-aged daughter, and almost 11 year old twin sons.

Now that Susan and Family are flying to WDW with me from Memphis, Joann will be providing transportation to and from the airport for all of us.

I truly wish that Jo's family could have joined us, but they have had what I consider the ultimate 'magic' at WDW. They went in December a few years ago.

I joined them even though it almost cost me my job at the time. Can you imagine anyone not understanding why a grandmother would want to take 4 days off of work to join Mickey and Minnie? Well, all I can say is that after nearly 40 years in the school system, I was more than ready to put my job on the line to go to WDW.

So I went with them and had a mystical marvelous time. If you haven't gone in December, you need to do so. There is nothing like what I call "twin magic" = Christmas and Mickey. If you go, be sure to go to Mickey's afterhours party. It was a little chilly, but there were "free" hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookie stops throughout the park. The Main Street Parade was indescribable. Can you imagine snow in Florida? Well, it happened on Main Street during the parade.

OK, back to The Supporting Actors

Susan was destined to have a Golden Retriever in her life at all times. You see, when she came home from the hospital at the ripe old age of three days, the first family member to greet her was Rex (Wrecks!).

Here's the story:

Susan's Father and I had wedding plans for August, 1965. But a little thing happened on the way to the church.....no, not a pregnancy.......a war! So her dad said "I got orders to go to Viet Nam today and I talked to the base chaplain and we're getting married here at Ft. Campbell Saturday."

Now, I (Bride) was in Indianapolis with my mom and little sis (Maid of Honor.) Joe, Susan's father, (Groom) was at Ft. Campbell, Ky. Joe's Cousin (Best Man) was in Memphis. My uncle (to walk me down the aisle) was in Nashville. Joe's mother, stepfather, and brothers were in Terre Haute, Indiana. My cousins and close friends (Bridesmaids) were scattered throughout Indiana, Tennessee, and Missouri. His cousins and friends (Groomsmen) were scattered throughout Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

That phone call came on a Tuesday night as I was addressing wedding invitations. I had not even had my first fitting of my wedding gown. And we had to schedule three pre-marital conferences with the chaplain before the wedding. Somehow, everything got done and all of the important people got to the church on time.

We were married for a few weeks before the big green bird flew Joe "westward." After tearfully waving him goodbye, I drove my little red Corvair filled with "all our earthly marital possessions" home to Indy to live with my Mom and Sis until Joe came home from the battleground.

Thankfully, he made it through the "storm" and we finally were able to start a "stable" married life. (More on that later.....perhaps.)

Anyway, the first thing we did was to go to his mom's house for a couple of days. He had a job with P&G waiting for him in Portsmouth, VA. We needed some furniture for our new home in Virginia. But in his mind, we needed a dog first.

Enter Rex. We bought a VERY FRISKY Golden Retriever puppy and a dinette set.

I got to name the puppy. Since I thought he looked like a lion cub, and since the lion is the King of the Jungle, and since the Latin word for "king" is "rex" well, you can guess the rest. However, after he lived in the house with us for a few weeks, I changed the spelling to "Wrecks."

I immediately got preggers with Susan and Rex/Wrecks accepted her the minute we brought her home. She was a dainty little pink bundle barely weighing 6 lbs. He was a clumbsy big furry ball of energy weighing close to 86 lbs. But he never once hurt her and became her guard dog the first night she was home. Wherever Susie was, there was Rex/Wrecks. If she was awake, he was in the same room with her. If she was asleep, he was reclined peacefully under her crib. How sweet.

Anyway, through the years there may have been other pets (cats, birds, poodles, ****Zus, wiener dogs, bunnies, turkeys, hamsters, etc.) there was always a Golden Retriever in Susan's life.

And the current supporting actors are two of the sweetest she has ever had.
Kudos to Magic and Harry.

...by my Mom!!

Wheeee....is everyone along for the ride? We may not need Soarin' after this!!
:rotfl2:

So let's go over these ADRs and what they mean to us. First off, I "slept in" a little this morning. Again, I was most worried about getting the California Grill reservation because I have heard they are hard to get. I have read to start calling about 5 minutes before the Dine line opens at 7am EST. Well, I didn't feel like getting up before 6am my time, organizing myself and being ready to make the call. So I let the alarm go off and finally got online and on the phone about 7:30 my time.

I talked to a wonderful CM (have yet to talk to a not-wonderful one! ;) ) and we started with Cali Grill on Monday night, just like we wanted it. Well, they had a couple of split tables near the 8:30 slot I wanted, but nothing close enough for me to consider splitting our group. So she checked all the other dates of our trip, and the times for tables of 5 were similar for all nights. We could either go for a 9:20 or a 7:40. Finally, I reverted to 7:40 on the originally-planned night. I figure we can check in and tell them we're not in a big hurry, so if they are running behind, we're fine. Then we will probably have an hour or more after dinner before Wishes. At that point, we can either hang out at the bar at CG, maybe walk around the Contemporary for a bit, or we may even decide to go on over to MK for the whole Wishes experience. Who knows? We'll play it by ear.

So from there, we moved on to the Fantasmic package. The first thing she shares with me is that the dinners on this package are usually at times between 3:30pm and 5pm. Weird for a 9pm show, huh? So that actually ruled out our arrival day since we don't arrive at the airport until 4:30pm. I figure we won't make it to the BC until at lest 6pm. So we had to change nights for Brown Derby. I looked at my tentative itinerary and decided to schedule it for Tuesday, the day we plan to visit DHS, at 4:30pm. That way if we are already at the park, fine. If not, we can make our way back there early for dinner. Either way, I think we'll have some time between dinner and the show to do a couple of attractions.

Well, Tuesday was our La Nouba night. Good thing I couldn't purchase those tickets until 180 days out! Since I didn't already have the nonrefundable tickets, I was able to shift the night. I decided to shift to Wednesday night. That means I have to be ready to call and buy my tickets this Friday if I want my selected seats. That also means we have to move Raglan Road from Tuesday to Wednesday.

So I tried to go ahead and book RR, but the CM told me that that is one of the few restaurants that does not allow the 180+10 booking. Gotta call them on Friday after we get our La Nouba tickets.

So next we just went back to square one and started with Saturday night. I moved bluezoo from Thursday to Saturday. Not really sure what my logic was there. But 8pm gives us plenty of time to get settled in our hotel room, explore the hotel and maybe the Boardwalk a little before dinner, and then probably BW after dinner. OH, and this one was easy to get in at whatever time I wanted. They were wide open.

Sunday stayed Jiko. Another one easy to get.

Thursday 'Ohana, also easy to get whatever time I wanted. This will be a good day to explore the Poly.

Friday stayed Whispering Canyon Cafe. Also very easy to get whatever time I wanted.

Final Recap: what I wanted and What I got:

Saturday - Fantasmic Package, Hollywood Brown Derby - bluezoo 8pm - ok because it gives us more flexibility on arrival day
Sunday - Jiko 7pm - Jiko 7pm (forgot to request seating) - Yippee!! I am very excited about this one, and exploring AKL too.
Monday - California Grill/Wishes from our table, 8:30pm - California Grill 7:40pm - Well, not exactly watching Wishes from our table, but it's the best we could do :confused3
Tuesday - Raglan Road, 8pm - Brown Derby Fantasmic Package 4:30pm - This one works out fine too. See above.
Wednesday - OHana - [Calling Friday for Raglan Road ADR]
Thursday - bluezoo - 'Ohana 7pm - Good (see above). This is our alternative to the Aloha dinner show/luau thing that we decided not to do.
Friday - Whispering Canyon Cafe, Wilderness Lodge, 7pm - WCC 7pm - :yay: BINGO!!

NEXT UP: KEYS TO THE KINGDOM TOUR

Holy cow, that's crazy that you had to rearrange times/days booking that far out! I booked around 50 days before arrival and got everything I wanted. Guess it just depends on when you're going. :confused3

Keep trying! I bet you can get things the way you want them later.
Yeah I know! I should not have slept in, huh? Next time I'll know to get up at 5:30am. Oh, and another tip - plan a 10-day vacation and book your California Grill on the last night. That has to be how these reservations fill so quickly. Unless there are some AP or DVC or some other kind of VIPs who get preferential ADRs. Hmmm...what do you think?
Now my comments re: Cast and Crew

There are some omissions in the descriptions of the above.
Well, I didn't have the time or space to write my biography! :lmao:

First, Susan. As her mom, I feel I have the right to add more adjectives for her. (After all, I did carry her in my womb for nine Looooooooooong months. actually, nine and a half = the ONLY time she has ever been slow to do something planned in her life, but not the ONLY time she has ever been LATE!)
I am good at being late. In fact, one of my new years' resolutions this year is 10 minutes early to every appointment or meeting. It's working so far!
Back to the adjectives:
Just stop it!
Second, Chris/Dude. well-built body w/o steroids, athletic, hard working, patient (has to be since he's in my family), also very intelligent, honest, trustworthy and thoughtful. And most important to me a good husband and great stepfather.
Agree to all of the above. Sometimes you gotta kiss a lot of frogs...

Third, Katie. I don't know if Susan planned to honor me by naming Katie
I did. I am jealous because I got stuck with Susan. Someone had to get the pretty name. :confused3 Not to be repetitive, but I'm also pretty proud of Kater. She is everything that Mom said above and more.

Next, me. Come on now, Susan! Could you find a more unflattering picture of me?
You can post a pic. That is what I had. Oh wait, you may not be able to post pictures yet, but at the rate you are posting, you'll have that privilege soon! :rotfl:

Thanks for joining, Mom. I will value your planning ideas and organization when you get to that part after you get past the historical commentary. ;)

On the CG Wishes thing. CG tends to run rather behind in seating people and you can always tell them you would like a Window Seat which will add to your time. When I made my ADR's a CM said to see Wishes in the Resturant you need to book 2 hours ahead. Meals take 1 1/2 hours and they are normally running 30-60 mins late.

Awesome! That is good to know. Sounds like our time might be just right!

I have already been busy this morning. I booked the Keys to the Kingdom tour for Mom, Chris and myself on Monday, August 11th. I am very excited about this tour. All three of us have always wanted to do it but never had (or taken?) the time.

The girls will go to the MK with us that morning. It is a "yellow" day and not an EMH, so they will get there with us before rope drop. I'll give them a touring plan to use if they like and I think they will have a great time while we are on the tour.

Also, we have decided to take the tour before we actually go to MK on our visit this year. That means we will know all these "secrets" on the day we actually get to visit MK for play!

The tour is prepaid, and I will also be buying the La Nouba tickets this Friday. My Amex card balance is really filling up!

NEXT UP: LA NOUBA AND RAGLAN ROAD

If my girls were in MK when I was taking the tour, and I knew they had their phones, I would feel a lot more comfortable. :thumbsup2

I've always wanted to do this one. I look forward to hearing about it.
