I had never heard of it until I met my IL's. My MIL loves it at Christmastime and there is always some out at family gatherings. DH's uncle also loves it. They only seem to eat it at the holidays though. Anyone else enjoy it?

For those who haven't had it...it is kind of like the inside of a butterfinger bar but not as sweet.

This is made from ground sesame seeds, right? I haven't had it in years but remember buying it at the local health food co-op. It was a great treat and thinking about it now makes me think I might get some soon. The other thing I remember was that it's kind of dry so I need to have something to drink with it. I do like the flavor, though, and it's nice that it isn't overly sweet.

Yes, it is made from tahini (ground sesame seeds) and sugar. :)

It is very dry and you do need something to drink with it but I also like that it isn't very sweet.

I buy it for my father at the Greek take-out place occasionally, but I don't really care for it myself.

Dan! After LisaZoe & Jenny responded I was going to form a conclusion that halvah was the food of the liberal elite but you had to go and ruin it! :teeth: ;)

Yes, I had this up at one of the JCC community events. I love it! I wonder if it's hard to make?:sunny:

Love it. I dated a girl in college that made it and I seem to remember it was fairly complicated to make (though I might just have been easily impressed under the circumstances). :p

I've never heard of this. I suppose if it has sugar, I will never taste it either.

Oh my gosh I used to love that stuff when I was a kid! After reading the title of this thread I got a craving for it again :D

I Love this stuff. The fresh stuff is far better then that which has sat on the shelf for awhile.

Now I may be wrong but for some reason I associate it with Jewish holiday's. Don't know why. I'm not Jewish. Perhaps someone knows.

I had it once, many years ago, tastes like sweet sand.
I was going to say it tastes like oily sand. Yuck, I can't stand the stuff, but my husband loves it. He's never been able to find it down here in Louisiana, but always buys some when we're in Chicago.

I haven't had it in years but really like it.

My mother and grandmother used to eat it all the time. They liked the marble one made by Joyva. I see it in the dairy case all the time. Brings back memories.

No it is a candy. There is no flour at all it it. I think that is why Jewish people eat it at their holiday time since they can't have flour.

can you eat honey? traditionally it is made with honey, not sugar.

halvah isn't really just a "jewish" food - it's middle eastern/mediterranean.
