I'm a life long New Englander. I know nothing else besides having 4 seasons. I LOVE the fall, despise the winter, don't care for spring and I'm okay with summer. LOL

With that out of the way, my husband and I have been talking about where we would like to move to (once kids are out of house/we retire/etc). We've tossed the idea around of Florida but everyone moves down there. Not that I wouldn't mind being closer to Disney but we've also talked about Tennessee.

We've visited twice over the last 4 years and have loved it. We did the whole Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg vacation both times and we have fallen in love with the area.

So, what town in Eastern Tennessee is a good place to live? What's the weather year round? Anything else you'd like to tell me about TN?

We live in East TN and love it. Many people retire
here due to the lower cost of living and no income tax :). We aren't in the retired bracket yet, but my DILs moved here from the DC area and love the slower pace.
We definitely have 4 seasons although I'm sure the winters would seem pretty mild to you. Snow has been a rare occasion in recent years. The fall colors are beautiful this year!
The Tri-Cities (Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City) area has a lot to offer and have several smaller towns in the general area. Just depends on what you are looking for. :)

I loved being living in Chattanooga, TN. I am not sure about the 4 seasons. It is either hot or cold. LOL We have awesome outdoor activities. Right now River Rocks is going this month. If snow we shut down everything. Yes that mean school and work too.LOL

I am a native Tennessen and I love it here. I grew up in East Tennessee but live in middle Tennessee now. I highly recommend Franklin but it is in middle Tennessee, just south of Franklin.

There are a lot of pretty towns to look at in East Tennessee. I think that I would look at something near one of the towns located on the rivers or lakes in that area. If you are looking at bigger cities, Chattanooga and west Knoxville are nice. For smaller towns you might try Maryville, Lenoir City or Kingston.

By the way, I am married to a converted northerner and he wouldn't live anywhere else.

I went to school in eastern TN and have always loved it. My DSS and his family now live in Nashville and I love visiting. I've pretty much traveled the entire state and didn't see an area I didn't like. The people are the best!

ETA: My DIL is from Moscow and she had initially insisted on living in a large city in the northeast. (She turned down a job offer at Yale). A big city was all she'd ever known. She's sold on Nashville and says it would be difficult for her to ever consider any other place.

I love TN. I'm in the Middle TN area, seasons blend here and winter can be hit or miss with snow sometimes. Chattanooga is a beautiful area from what I've seen and heard from people in that area.

We relocated from western NY to Chattanooga, TN about a year and a half ago. I love it. The summers aren't bad. The winter is easy. And fall is great - just happens a little later than it happens up north. I enjoy being able to ride around with my retractable sunroof open 9 months out of the year.

But it's not just the weather that I love. There is so much to do here. Downtown is safe and clean with lots of good restaurants. Then between the mountains, the river and the lakes, there are plenty of outdoor recreation options. We are only 1.5 - 2 hours away from other fun locations like Gatlinburg, Nashville, Atlanta and Huntsville.

And best of all, we are within driving distance of The Mouse. We can be on property in just over 8 hours!

Adore Chattanooga area , my Dad grew up there and I have spent much of my life on long visits there. We have a family farm in Madisonville which is outside of Maryville. Both areas I love . My best friend lives in Knoxville, just moved there from South Louisiana , she is having the best time exploring all of the east Tn area . I would give anything to move to east Tennessee , unfortunately DH's job doesn't permit that .

Hello fellow Tri-Citian! I agree the Tri- Cities is a good place to grow up, have a family and retire.

Lots of small towns inside of each city. It's beautiful here in every season I think.

If you haven't toured the Civil War sites on Lookout Mountain, do so when you can. Fascinating!

Deleted for now. Working on pics for you.

Another one from East TN here. Lived in Knoxville for 20 years and love it. People are nice, area is beautiful, real estate is reasonable. I highly, highly recommend Knoxville!!!!!!

Dh and I were born in raised in the same small town in rural Upstate NY. After our oldest son passed away I started to get a yurn to move to Tennessee. I have never even been to Tennessee, but; I feel a pull to eastern Tennessee specifically. Western Knoxville appeals to us and when our youngest graduates High school we will probably seriously consider it.

I don't like the snow and cold, I need a few more things to do then we have around here, my husband job in the printing industry is dying here. I think it might be time to pack it up and move on!

How does one even start deciding on where to move, out of state?

He mentioned yesterday that maybe we should visit there again next year for our vacation and then scout out some towns. But where do you go from there?

My inlaws moved there about 8 years ago and love it. They love it there. We do enjoy going to visit during the summer time. Winter is a little to cold for my liking but dh and the kids love it. They live in a small town buy Knoxville .

I've not moved from out of state but only moved around in state. What things are important to you guys as a town? What do you want to be near?

What a timely thread. Don't live in TN but have an Aunt that lives in eastern TN and a friend in Knoxville. I go up couple times a year and we can not wait to live up here! In fact hubby is looking into jobs around Knoxville and Chattanooga areas. There seems to be so many things to do up there and as a 40 year resident of Florida it doesn't seem as hot up in that area as down here. I am a soggy mess most of the year in Florida lol. And the people are much nicer in TN too. At least Eastern TN.

The forums on city-data.com are a great place to start scouting what a state is like to live in. Many of the postings are from people thinking about moving there, asking specific questions about locations, etc. They don't pull any punches! I also like the website because if you type in a specific city name it will give you detailed information like closest large(r) cities of various sizes, crime rates broken down by type, weather conditions year around, types of employment, etc.

I love KY/TN also, and would move in a minute!

A long-time friend of mine who has lived in NJ and Fla lives in Sevierville. She loves it. :goodvibes
