I don't watch the show like I used to, but it is a classic. Especially in this day and age of reality shows playing to the lowest common denominator, it's something special to having biting, intelligent humor on the air. Like any show, it's had its ups and downs. The ups, though, are way up.

Example: Homer and Apu travel to India to visit the head of the Quikie Mart Corporation (a 7-11 type store). As they walk up to this huge building made of marble, there is a man sitting on a throne (presumably the head of the corporation). They are allowed to ask him three questions. Above him a sign is shown (just briefly): "Master knows all," with "except combination to safe" in smaller letters underneath.

Now THAT'S comedy.

My brother and I grew up with this show...ever since the first 'christmas Special' before it become a full time show - we were hooked. (we weren't allowed to watch the Tracy Ullman show back then. heheh)

At least once a day when emailing back and forth to each other - we include a simpsons reference. Today's was this:

Anyways, we had a good laugh last night with a feature on my phone.

Background: There's a simpsons episode when homer runs out of the house naked, and Flanders screams "Homer! I see your doodle!" and he's like "Shut up, flanders"

Anyways, the term "doodle" is obviously our term.

Anywho, my phone has a "drawing" feature, called "doodle"

You can create a doodle, save a doodle, add a doodle, delete a doodle, color a doodle, send a doodle, receive a doodle, edit a doodle, and, of course, view a doodle.

Yeah, after about 4 glasses of wine, we were laughing at it.

Homer: "No beer and no tv make Homer something something"
Marge: "Go crazy?"
Homer: "DON'T MIND IF I DO!! BLAH BLEH BLAH BLECH WOO-WOO-HUBBANA"

heheheh

I LOVE the Simpsons..... you do have to be very well read and up on the lastest news to get alot of the humor.
I have seen A&E's Inside the Actor's Studio with all the Simpson actors several times and it is wonderful. If you can, watch it next time it airs.
I also love The Family Guy.... I miss Stewie.

:D

The Simpsons is one of the greatest shows ever televised. I love that the writers incorporate so many styles of humor, from political to silly. It's come a long way since the crude sketches that first appeared on the Tracy Ullman show. Shows that have been on for as long as it has are on for a reason. They're better than good.

I like it. Someone has made the point that it's one of the most family oriented shows on TV. Think about it. There are so very few shows on TV featuring intact families...most TV parents tend to be single. And it's really the only show where the family consistently goes to church. I think there are more church scenes in the Simpsons than there are in Seventh Heaven. Occasionally they would go to church on Andy Griffith, and they've gone a couple of times on Raymond, but other than that, no one ever goes to church on TV.

When they started out I thought they were funny.... it was before I was married and my maiden name is Simpson. But then they just got annoying and trashy and bratty. Can't stand them!! But I did let the kids get their Dad a Homer Simpson bottle opener that talks for Christmas. They all get such a chuckle out of it!..................P

The ds always want to watch it and havent gotten tired of it over the years. Got them a trivia game about it for last xmas. Some of the questions were really hard.

Never watched it, but have accidentally seen some of it when waiting for Malcolm in the Middle. I think, from what I've seen, that it is crude and in bad taste.

MitM is OK but the Simpsons is in bad taste? LOL

Even more than Seinfeld was, the Simpsons can be hard to warm up to given the number of past episode referrences and pop culture humor. You can be completely lost if you missed the key prior episodes or have not seen the orginal material that is being parodied.

I think a perfect example is the "Cape Fear" episode. If you had not seen either of the original movies, and the prior SSB episodes, that whole episode makes little sense.

Personally that part of the show is what makes it one of my favorites, but I realize it's also what keeps it from being more popular. It doesn't hurt that I'm also a Disney fan which allows me to catch all the rips on the Mouse House as well.

It's Mary Poppins! No, it's Sherry Bobbins...do you want to get suuuuuuuued?!?

;)

We love the Simpsons! The 4th season DVD set comes out next week. I've really enjoyed the commentary on the DVD sets.

OMG - remember the episode they went to EPCOT and Homer tried to jump the fence to MK and (if I remember correctly) Mickey Mouse beat him up and sent him back?

heheheeh...I just remember him on the monorail and seeing EPCOT and saying "AH CRAP!"

hhehehehehe

we need a simspons trivia and/or quotes thread! heeheheh

I've never been allowed to watch it because my mom feels it's totally inappropriate. That being said, we did watch the episode where someone recites "The Raven" in 8th grade English class, and I have no need to ever see another Simpsons show again.

I may get kicked off the DIS for this- but DH and I love Simpsons more than Mickey! DH collects the diaramas with the talking figures. My parents are missionaries and we call them the Flanders. We got them a huge Flanders cake for their church reception- they thought it was hysterical. DH's dream is to turn the basement of our new house into Moe's.
