Do you like bed & breakfast places?

I'm traveling to the coast with a friend in September and she picked out a B&B for us to stay at. I've never stayed at a B&B and never really wanted to. It looks like staying at grandmas house with the Victorian decor. I don't want to have tea in the parlor and visit with the host and other guests. I'd much rather stay at a newer hotel. But, I owe her big, and she just loves B&Bs, so off to granny's house I go. Maybe it won't be as bad as I imagine.

I have only stayed in 2 and one was owned by my inlaws so that doesn’t really count. The other was more like an inn. I generally look at hotels but would consider a B&B if ( a) was its own contained suite with complete bathroom And ( b) had some character to it. I am not into staying in a place that looks like any suburban home. I think I would feel a bit uncomfortable as well if the hosts hovered. I don’t mind eating breakfast or tea with others though like on a cruise..

I’ve never stayed in one but that is the image I have as well. Please update us when you come back. I’m curious if we’re right or wrong.

I don’t like sharing meals like that. I have stayed at a B&B in Key West before because it was the absolute last room on the island (New Years Eve) but we didn’t end up eating there.

We have stayed at two B&Bs and we love them! I’d definitely pick a B&B over a hotel, but since our kids are usually in tow, it’s mostly hotels for us.

I've done B&Bs. Most of them are just nice, big houses, with lots of bedrooms. Yes, breakfast is served in a community room, much like a buffet situation. Not unlike a small restaurant. I've had the same experience in some hotels/motels. You don't HAVE to visit with host or other guests if you don't want to.

As to the decor, it depends on the owner's taste. Some are just decorated like any "normal" house. Others have themed decor, be it Victorian, futuristic, or whatever.

The idea of a bed and breakfast to me sounds homey and quaint. I definitely would not want to share a bathroom with strangers though!

Not our thing; it feels weird being in someone's home. We do like little boutique hotels though - big corporate chains are probably our least-favourite type of accommodation.

Once and that was enough. I did not like it at all. I felt like I was staying at my grandmothers house.

DH and I went out to dinner and when we came back, the whole place was asleep, it was totally silent. We were creeping up the stairs giggling because we felt like a couple of teenagers sneaking in after curfew. At least at this particular Inn all the rooms had their own bathrooms. I would not do a shared bathroom place.

The rooms had no tvs so if you wanted a TV you had to go down to the common room. It was so awkward, I wanted a tv in the room because I like to listen to the news in the morning while getting ready. Breakfast was also awkward. They had a continental breakfast in the kitchen. Everyone sat at a long table and just kind of ate and make small talk. I was never comfortable and we both agreed we would never do that again. I just don't like interacting with strangers very much.

I am a "big hotel with lots of amenities" type of person. LOL !

Yeah, I'm more a big chain newer hotel person. I have certain chains I go to when I travel. At least in this B&B we have our own bathroom, thankfully. I think I'd have to put my foot down if it was a shared bathroom.
How long are you staying?

We have stayed in B & B's 3 times over the years. We have always had our own bathroom.

I would rather stay at a hotel, but the 3 times we stayed at B & B's was because that was all that was available.

One we stayed at in Maine, the host basically stood in the dining area and "held court"! He would yell over to this guest or that guest and ask various questions. It was awful!! I just wanted to sit and eat my breakfast and chat with my husband, but it was so uncomfortable, because the host was trying to get everyone to interact with each other. The guy was super nice, but it just wasn't our thing.

The other two places were nothing like that. Everyone ate in the dining room, but you ate at your table and the hosts kept busy keeping people fed. I felt like I was in a restaurant. I was very comfortable in both places, but again, a hotel would have been my first choice!
