I'm watching the news and all the warnings for Tornados that might be coming are way. The weather man has metioned several times to make sure you know what county you live in. Isn't that common sense. Don't most people know what county they live in. Even if you just moved here that is something you usually would know right away. Or is it????

that is odd. Even my youngest knows our county and township. Now ask him the city and he has no clue since we are a suburb and go by township

Yes, I know my county: Summit county - the county home to Goodyear, Firestone, NEC Golf tournament, and the highest peak in Ohio!

One would think you'd know what county you live in. I remember every county I've lived in:

Knox (TN)
Carter (TN)
New Haven (CT)
Wasco (OR)
Multnomah (OR)
Brevard (FL)

for the state of Maine lesson.......and it says all the counties in maine.....well we live in Androscoggin.......which is a mouthful.....but glad that we dont' in piscataquis

CAUSE I THINK I SPELT IT WRONG

I think they mean visitors I know a few years ago, we had a major church convention where several thousand people come in every year to camp. We were having tornado warnings and most of these people had no idea what county they were in and wrote letter after letter to the paper asking that they give the town names along with the county for visitors.

The county song is the one thing I remember from 4th grade!

Sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle

16 counties in our State
Cumberland and Franklin
Piscatasiquis and Somerset
Aroostook Androscoggin
Sadahoc and Kennebec
Lincoln Knox and Hanncock
Waldo Washington and York
Oxford and Penobscot!!!

My roommate for my first year in college said that her state (Missouri) didn't do counties when I asked her what county she lives in:rolleyes:

I had to go look it up since I was just guessing as well!

Here are the correct spellings:

Piscataquis
Sagadahoc

Counties do not have any meaning in Connecticut. Because we are such a small state and there are no unincorporated areas (the State is completely divided up into towns or cities), we did away with the county level of government. Condsidering our state is the size of some western counties anyway, it does not make sense to have another layer of government.

We based our territories on "boroughs" more than counties when I lived in NY, even though I was aware that I lived in Kings County, Brooklyn was the borough and that was all we needed to know. People who lived outside of the boroughs dealt with counties more from what I could see.

Here in GA counties mean EVERYTHING! You can bet I know which one I live in here!

Yes, I can't imagine not knowing. Don't most towns have a county courthouse, county hospital, county jail, county fair, etc.? Even if you don't live in the county seat, you'd probably have to go to the courthouse sometime. I just asked my nine year old and he knew immediately.

I can tell you what counties all my Nebraska relatives lived in when I was a kid too - because of watching tornado warnings on tv when we visited them.

Yeah, it would be real hard not to. They're the ones that are constantly trying to find new ways to suck more money out of us. ;)

Not here.

I just asked my son what county we live in and he said Bed-Stuy, that's a section of Brooklyn. When we lived in NC he knew we lived in Wake County. It was hard NOT to know, the county name was on EVERYTHING.

We've lived here three months and DH still doesn't remember the county.
