with the beta fish is? I know there are usually prayer plants in with it but I don't know if there is a specific name. My mother wants one and I thought I could give it to her for Easter. I have called every florist around here and none of them carry it. I might end up making it and I'm not that crafty. Do you know how I ask for the plant that goes in the vase?

Thanks.

They usually use the lucky bamboo plant for the betta vases or in the picture with the vase, they have some type of lily.

Weird! I just posted a similar question a few weeks ago. I ended up making my own arrangement for a benefit last weekend. They have kits in the craft section of Walmart complete with directions and plant suggestions. I used a Peace Plant. I spent under $20 including decorative rocks and betta food. The fish needs to be fed ~ it can't survive on the fish roots. The fish also breathes air so make sure you don't fill the vase too full. The arrangement was beautiful and received lots of oooohs and aaaahhhhs.

As a plant AND fish lover, I cringe when I see or hear about these. You would not stick your plants in a pot that is too small, don't do it with a fish. Bettas are tropical fish. Unless you are keeping your house at 76 or more degrees, you are putting them in a less-than desirable environment. Sure, they CAN breathe air, but they do much better when they can also breathe with their gills. Their water should be clean, and a sprig of bamboo is not enough to filter out the waste that a properly fed fish would produce.

Do the fish a favor and put them in a real fish tank with a heater and a filter. Put a plant on top if you need to.

Another angle to take. Try your hand at the limitless world of aquatic plants.

Here's a link to the thread about the Betta/plant arrangement.

They usually have them out closer to Easter.
Bettas like stagnent warm water that's why it works for them. They don't need an air pump or filters either as would other fish.
:fish:My Betta would probably enjoy eating the roots of a plant if I were to put one in with him.

Bettas tolerate stagnant water. And certainly they are found in Southeast Asian rice paddies which can be stagnant, but consider how much water these paddies get during the rainy season. This is a constant supply of fresh water. They do need a bit more room than a tiny vase or the shot glasses they are often sold in at stores.

Check out this site: http://www.bettadreams.com/ Not the best looking site, but definitely full of info on Betta splendens.

I think a large vase is plenty large enough for one betta. The plant roots are kept trimmed and don't come very far down into the vase. As with any fish without filtered water running, the water needs to be changed regularly. My kids have had many different betta's that have thrived and survived in a regular fish bowl.
