Do you know someone who "can't" help themselves?

My best friend at work just ratted me out over the weekend. We have been friends for like 14 years. I do a lot for her, and she for me. We even dated about 12 years ago for a month.

Here is what I did wrong. I left work 10 minutes early on Saturday. We don't have a time clock. No supervisors either. I left because I had a dinner reservation at 8PM and I heard on the radio that traffic was really backed up on the road I normally use to go home. So, I decided to leave 10 minutes early. All my work was done. NOTHING left to do at all.

My leaving early had no impact on her job for the evening.

She turned me in to my boss and I got reamed. Was I wrong? Yes.

However she rats out everybody ALL the time. Like she rats out people EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Normally, I guess in some workplaces, she might suffer retaliation. She rats people out in front of coworkers. At least she isn't sneaky about it. She is not a supervisor.

In this case, we realize that she just can't help herself.

Know anybody like that?

Well, if you knew she was like that, you shouldn't have done that in front of her! :teeth:

Funny thing, I didn't do it in front of her. I have no idea how she found out.

Then you should have Denied it.

I can't imagine someone like that being my "best friend", at work or otherwise.

I have a sibling like that, and I can't stand her.

See, I understand her. I could go into detail, but I just think she has problems that we, as people, need to deal with. It isn't always easy, though.

Wow... you got reamed for leaving 10 minutes early and all your work was done.?!?! I would definitely be looking for a new job... that really stinks.

I think I'd find a new friend since this woman sounds like anything but a friend. Have you asked her why she felt compelled to inform your supervisor that you left early? And getting reamed out over a lousy ten minutes??? That stinks.

Oh yeah, I have known people who say and do things because they say they "can't help themselves". I ditch them fast. I don't believe for one minute that someone can't help themself. That's just a big fat excuse to give themselves permission to make others lives miserable. Some people can't stand anyone to be happy when they are not.

Deny! Deny! Deny!
Her watch must've been fast.
If you feel like being a little snarkier,
"Your lunch was in the fridge? And it's gone? Isn't that strange. I have no idea what might've happened to it. Are you sure you aren't going crazy? Maybe it's still at home, on the counter?"

People like her "know" everything!!! You should have worked 10 minutes of your lunch/break and then left a message for your boss exactly why you were leaving 10 minutes early.... and beat the tattler to the punch!

I have found that people like that are really unhappy with their lives and just try to make everyone around them just as unhappy.....sorry about your trouble with her.....you seem like a very understanding person.....hope you had a good dinner that night! :sunny:

Wow. I'm sure that she isn't perfect 100% of the time, either. Wonder how she'll feel when other people go out of their way to rat her out
I know I wouldn't consider someone like that a friend. And I would just bide my time...

I would definately have a hard time remaining friends with someone who did that. And yes, I know people like that, and they don't have too many friends.

If you choose to remain friends with her, then don't cry to us!!!!!!

And as far as dealing with her problems...sorry, but saying that "we" around her must deal with her problems just continues to give her license for bad behavior.

I always hate people who use the excuse "I can't help it"...you most certainly can help it, if you want to.

I've been trying to tell my mother that about my sister for many years. Now my mother is 83, in bad health, and I have a pathetic 53 yr old sister who I will NOT deal with when my mother is gone.

I think it's a cop out that some people think that they can't help themselves. It's a nice excuse, but not true. They need to accept responsibilty for their behavior and actions. We can all choose to control our behavior, assuming we don't have a true medical condition that makes that impossible.

Wow what a witch....where I worked she would have been dealt with swiftly as all rats at work are.....we don't take kindly to rats in the workplace!

LOL.. I'm not "crying". Just curious how or if others have this problem. If I thought it was something she could control, I would have ditched her a long time ago. I think she has a mental problem.
