by pretending that their vehicle was stolen when they actually just got 'rid of it' on their own?

There is actually a group of guys in trouble right now in my town for having a chop shop. Among those arrested, was one that committed insurance fraud by telling that his truck was stolen, but he had really sold it to the chop shop.

If you've ever seen the movie "29th Street", its a story about my cousins. One of the storylines is about the time that they ditched a car for the insurance, and it kept getting found and returned.

Trust me, it wasn't done for dramatic effect. They actually did this, and one of my cousin's was a cop at the time. :teeth: :rotfl:

Yes, my neighbor owed more for their car and it wasn't working well, so they left it downtown with the key in it and unlocked, they went to a ball game and sure enough when they came back, it was gone!! :)

Yes, when DH and I first started dating one of his friends said his car was stolen. It was found the next day in a warehouse park, and had been set on fire. He had been having a lot of problems with it so we suspected at the time that he had something to do with the 'theft', and found out later that he definitely did.

He had some kind of problem with the insurance though....they told him that he didn't have fire coverage. I'm not sure if he ever got paid for it.

I was just lurking...

But had to stop in and say - this is why our car insurance rates are so high. The trickle down effect!!!

Our neighbor did this in a way - he did have his car broken into, but greatly inflated what was stolen. He thought he was going to get several thousand to replace those items (one was his fiances diamond engagement ring - which she has been wearing the entire time!!) Well come to find out his policy had a $1k limit - he still got more than he should have, but at least it was not more!! I did tell him I thought it was wrong that he did that and he would feel it later!! He just looked at me like he could not believe I said that - maybe someday he will learn!!!

Yep. Worked as an insurance adjuster for 7 years and busted lots of phony car thefts and fires.

I also have a BiL who worked in the body shop business for a few years and he got involved in taking used parts from salvage yards and charging the insurance companies for new parts. That happens a lot.

ITA!!!
I had a boyfriend whose parents inflated what was stolen..they wanted "cover the deductable", whatever...

Not that I know of!

When DHs car was broken into he didn't even report everything that was gone since INS wasn't going to replace it and he figured it wasn't that big of a deal. :confused3

So leaving your keys in the car is fraud? DH has a bad habit of doing this but the car is in front of the house.

i work in insurance & you would be surprised how common insurance fraud is, theres a whole dept. just for fraud investigations & they do follow suspects for years & they do prosecute. everyone pays more because of fraud.

Years ago a kid in the neighborhood borrowed his uncles's backhoe, dug a deep hole and buried his trashed Subaru. The insurance company paid off and he was never caught.

His uncle never let him borrow anything again.

OMG!!! DH has a cousin who buried his Nissan 300zx many years ago. I never thought I'd hear that someone else did this too. I drive by the property where he did it, and often wonder if the new owners will ever find it. Plus the whole thing about the oil, gas leaking and stuff makes me wonder.

I think when you park in a bad part of town and do that "whoopsy--left my keys in the car ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) "--then it is fraud.

Unless your policy has a clause that says you cannot leave keys in the car--your hubby forgetting them isn't fraud--unless he "remembers" to forget them on purpose. KWIM.

Sad. I do hope he's a ex-cop with a prison record now.

My first car was a 77 cougar. I LOVED that car! I sold it to a friend of my boss' to help pay for our first apartment. A month later I found out it had been chopped and used for the insurance money. To this day it still upsets me!

The kid down the street was overheard by the one across the street telling someone he wished he could hire someone to steal his truck. Within a couple of days his truck was gone and the kid across the street saw someone else from that night driving it. :confused3 The kid that overheard the conversation mentioned it to his mom and she reported it to the county police, who had already found the truck in a mudhole in the next county, who did absolutely nothing about it.
