Do you know any close talkers?

You know them. We all know them. Those close talkers. You know ... the ones who cross over the imaginary line when we are having conversation with them. And the strangest part is that they are usually LOUD talkers to boot!

My cousin is a close talker. I have gotten in the habit of putting my foot out and getting in "the stance" when she approaches me to tell me something. But there are days that it does not work! She finds her way in and is close talking! Hello! Have you ever heard of "personal space?"

So, do I say something to her? I see her close talking to other people and always feel so sorry for them. Thank god her breath does not smell! By the way, she is the kindest, sweetest person and I do love her. I just cannot stand the close talking!

We have a guy like that at work, and to make it worse he is a spitter when he talks so you get a shower if you can't back yourself out of it!

I had an old boss who was like this. He was a spitter and had bad breath, too. I used to cringe anytime I heard him say my name. :faint:

Yes!!!

One of the moms here in town is like that. I always end up pinned against the wall at school or the side of a car if we are chatting in the parking lot.

She gets right up close to the person she is speaking with, very very uncomfortable, and no matter how much side stepping, she matches every move!

Nice lady, but I cringe when she walks up to me to chat!

I always have to use "the foot" with my next door neighbor. He has wicked breath to boot! I've found that having a rake in your hand every time you are outside, you can position it in front of you and keep the distance safe. My neighbor steps in even further when he has an especially important point to make- I ALWAYS take a huge step back when he does this and he never seems to notice. One conversation, he backed me around my van TWICE in my driveway. Oh- did I mention he spits when he talks?

I know boundary crossers, but not really any close talkers.

The boundrary crossers, I just keep my distance.

You may try to step back with your cousin.

I don't know either how you politely convey "This is my dance space, this is yours, let's cha cha".

I know, or have known, several. No matter how much I like a person, two feet is the closest I want them in my face. My wife has a cousin who barely talks above a whisper and she can be difficult to have a conversation with.

"I have a personal space issue. Thank you." - along with a please move back hand gesture - is a good starter when someone is just too close for comfort. It works for me.
