We have always kept all of our doors locked all the time. My dad was a cop. He knew all too well the things that can go on, even in the best neighborhoods. I don't think there's any such thing as a "safe neighborhood." The only way a neighborhood would be truly safe is if it had locked gates at the end of every street and someone checking IDs before anyone is let in (gated communities already do this but not regular neighborhood streets). Anyone can come into almost any neighborhood at any time. Safety has nothing to do with who lives there.
