I know I have a lot of slides especially from the 60's - 80's and didn't want to pay several hundred dollars to purchase a scanner or travel back and forth to a lab to do it.
I found this inexpensive simple technique using a fluorescent flashlight.

If you have slides that would make some great pics for your scrapbooks, this is a great trick.
I would recommend scanning at least 300 dpi with a magnification of 300 or higher.
You will have to play with your scanner settings, and possibly tweak the levels of the photo in your editing program.
