Do you have hair cutting scissors?

I've been surprised how many people don't seem to have them. I saw a headline with Kelly Ripa saying "I cut my hair with craft scissors because we obviously don't have hair scissors."

Maybe it's because I'm frugal and try to save money on haircuts? I had a small pair with blunt ends that I used when the kids were little. Now I have a bigger pair because I have bangs and I need to trim them pretty frequently. So I have TWO pairs of scissors, both of which I've had for many years. DH has a beard trimmer that I've been using on his head now too. It just seems weird that I have something that people who care a lot more about their appearance and spend more money on it than I do don't have.

So, do YOU have hair cutting scissors?

I have a very old pair ( 30+) years from my Dad of all people. These scissors somehow survived a divorce and two major moves and ended up with me as part of my first aid box. They really don’t work anymore. He used it to trim his mustache I believe.

FYI a friend of mine is a hairdresser and cringes when she sees people cutting hair with craft scissors or fabric scissors. I guess the blade is somehow different and “ damages “ or does a bad cut on the hair follicle.

We have several pairs for the cats (our little male's floofy pants can get rather wild!) -- which I suppose could work just fine on people, too, since they are pretty sharp. And I have a small razor comb trimmer for DH which I've used on his hair a time or two over the last 8 weeks.

I have a couple of pairs of hair cutting scissors and a set of clippers that just sort of "happened," not because I think that I would have been proactive and purchased them initially in my course of life.

When my son was younger (about eight or so), I sent him to get his haircut with his dad with very clear instructions written down, "Number 4 across the sides and back, blah, blah blah...). I then ran into the grocery store that was in the same strip mall. I had barely started shopping, when he was standing by my arm with his hair already cut. When I saw him, I said, "What did they do?!?!?" I'm not sure where the mix-up was, but apparently, the only thing the stylist heard was "#4." I told him that if he was happy with "just a #4 all over, that I wasn't going to pay for his haircuts anymore. We went to Costco, picked up a set of Wahl clippers, and I have cut his hair ever since, about 20 years now.

My mom took a hair cutting class once, and had a decent quality cape, scissors, comb, etc. as a part of that experience. When she heard that I had started cutting the boys' hair, she passed them on to me. Ever since, I have used those scissors to trim my bangs between haircuts. I can't imagine trying to do that task with craft scissors. I now consider hair scissors to be a must-have part of my personal care kit.

I admit to being openly relieved when I saw a news article about people running out to buy hair clippers and scissors a few weeks into the pandemic and me thinking, "Well, thank goodness I already own those things and can sit this new wave of hysteria out." Haircuts are one of the few things that we aren't concerned about in our household.

I used to cut our boys’ hair when they were little. So I have a couple pair laying around here. Also have hair clippers. Haven’t used them in years though. I can do shorter cuts pretty well but when they started growing them a bit longer I had to let someone else do them.

I have a pair that came with the clipper set that I purchased many years ago. They feel "heavy" to me, though...they're much bigger/thicker than the scissors my stylist uses, so they're probably only meant to be used for clean-up, not a full haircut. I feel that they don't cut neatly. I've wanted to get an actual pair of haircutting scissors for a while now - my stylist has been encouraging me from day one to do DS's hair myself. He screams when I use the clippers, so I need the scissors. I've been doing DH's hair for as long as I've had the clippers, but he's a clipper cut all over.

I have hair scissors and a cape. My son is super blonde and I got tired of taking him for a hair cut only to get home and find long hairs behind his ears, etc. I’ve also trimmed my daughters bangs once or twice when we couldn’t seem to get to the salon for a bang touch up.

I have several types of scissors but no hair cutting shears.
I'm pretty good at cutting edibles, paper, and fabric but have no aptitude at cutting hair thus no tools for the job.

Oh and neither has DGD. She's been chopping her hair off during this shutdown and I just keep passing her scarves to wear :lmao:. As she says: "It'll grow back".

I took a year of cosmetology way back in high school. I've had one ever since :) Let me tell you how handy they were having 3 girls! I've cut all our hair for years! Well, except for my husband. He'd rather pay someone to do it. I'm good with that. Now, I enlist my dd to help me with the back because my shoulders just don't work like they used to :)

Nope, don’t have hair scissors, never used them. When DS was a little boy, I gave him a buzz cut with clippers a few times, but wasn’t that good or comfortable with it. The barber did a much better job, DS liked going, and kid’s cuts were inexpensive.

I have a pair of scissors that I used to use to trim my bangs. I think they are designed for hair but it’s been so long I honestly can’t remember. I’m not good at it. So I am not even tempted to use them.

Figured it was one of those things a household has in there somewhere. Even if it's just the lousy set that comes with an electric clipper.

Yes......and a clipper set.
Used to cut DH's hair years ago
DD cut DGD's hair yesterday

I bought some haircut supplies the week this started going down. It was one of the few times where my instincts were correct.

Nope. We only have clippers for when I shave DHs head. If you ask my daughter#2 and her preschool age self, any scissors can become hair scissors.
