We have digital cable upstairs and downstairs AND 2 DVR's. I wouldn't give them up for anything.

We have cable because you can't pick up many channels where we live.

We had DISH and changed to cable.

We watch news, movies, comedy, animal stuff, discovery, history, Nascar, Cartoon network, etc...
I don't watch the "prime time" shows ever.

We do have local for the news and the occasional show we might watch like a playoff game or Nascar.

Oh yes, and love my DVR too.

Digital cable and that is what our computers run on also.

We have extended cable right now w/ internet. We love the Discovery Channel and the Hallmark Channel and would miss those if they were gone.

I have digital cable with internet and we just got dvr. I love dvr. I think I watch less tv now that I just record and watch the shows I want to watch.

We don't have cable tv. We only have cable for our internet and my company pays for that. NOTHING would get done around here if we had all of those channels.

We have direct TV, it seemed to be the cheapest, because In Staten Island, you have to have some sort of cable to have any channel at all even local ones.I agree that there are too many "air" channels. My husband and I usually watch the national geographic, history & travel channels along with my son's channel Noggin (really cute educational shows for kids) and of course Disney channel. The only show I watch all week in Gilmore Girls. The best written show on TV today!!

Too bad you can't just pay for the channels you want. This way you can have 10-15 channels instead of 500!!!:earseek:

Forgive me for asking, but I'm one of the people without cable. What is a DVR?

A DVR is like TiVo. You can pause programs while watching them and you can record an entire series with just the push of a button. We have a dual channel DVR so we can record something while we watch something else or we can record 2 different shows while we watch something that was taped previously. It can hold about 70 hours in memory. It's great.

What do you guys mean by "air channels"?

We have direct tv and still getting our local channels. We have have the package with Soapnet. I'd be lost without my soapnet channel.

We have cable AND a satellite dish. Our internet is run through our cable provider and we get the basic cable package for tv. We have the dish for all the extra stations...and of course for my Dh to get the NFL package, so he can watch all of his teams play football!

Sounds very useful ::yes::. Thanks for the explanation.

Our cable system gives us 14 HD channels at present, and I have them wired through the TIVO. We don't watch many shows, but I couldn't imagine going without the ones we do like. No need for movie channels when you have Netflix!

I agree with many of the posters about how many of the channels coming into my house are chock full of garbage and misinformation, but the first amendment needs to be respected even though it does allow examples of above such as religious programming and Fox "news" to exist!

As a poster above stated, it would be fascinating to see how viewing habits would change if one could order only the channels one wanted instead of the packaged tiers that every cable system has. It makes one wonder what channels would wither away due to lack of interest.....

I'm just curious as to how many DISers have cable. DH and I decided to forego cable when we moved into our new place. As much as I enjoyed shows like Law&Order...all episodes, The Golden Girls, Star Trek:TNG...some, not all, of the commercials and other shows to me were icky and offensive! :confused3 I also watched too many soap operas and I didn't want that garbage in my home anymore. So DH and I have been renting Star Trek:TNG over the last few weeks....LOVE that show! And we also watch a lot of DVDs that we already own. So nice to not have that "distraction" in my home and it was a distraction for me because I didn't always know when to turn it off. Where I work we have cable, so I always know what's going on in the world because I work 5 days a week.

What's your opinion DISers? Also not having cable is one less bill in my home, so that's a plus too. I don't even have the basic channels where I am because you can't get squat without the cable connection.
No cable tv or internet. We manage nicely without and our kids don't suffer. We *do* have blockbuster home move service for $14.95/mo. That's 1/3 the price and lots of great shows are on CBS, NBC, PBS, Fox and ABC. Plenty enough for tv watching.

We have had it for 2 years now and to be quite honest I really don't think it's worth it. Not when you get repeat after repeat.

I would love it if you were able to get cable with just a few channels. I have about 80 but only watch 3 or 4 of them. And the 3 or 4 I watch are only available through cable.
