Do you have any famous or infamous ancestors?

I've been told that I am a direct decendent of the Stirling family and that they were the last King and Queen of Scotland. My grandfather is William Stirling Overling. I have seen shows on TV about them, they weren't very nice, they tended to hold grudges. I have even heard that the Stirling Castle is the most haunted castle in the world.

That's on my mom's side.

On my dad's side, I have been told that we are related to Frank and Jesse James.

Two of my uncles researched my father's family and found Pocahontas & Robert E. Lee.
Apparantly Pocahontas' daughter married a relative of ours.
My Paternal Grandmother was a McCoy.....if you read any of the stories about the feud you've read about her uncles.:D

LOL we could start our own feud ;) I'm a Hatfield on my mother's side. All of our family still lives in that section of KY/WV.

I am now working on becoming a professional Genealogist.

Just a few of my famous and infamous are:

Esther Houston-Aunt to Sen. Samuel Houston
Pocahontas-distantly
Wild Bill Killer Miller-was related to Pretty Boy Floyd
John Prunty-founder of Pruntytown

Some of the early Presidents

The only infamous person I'm related to had a book written about him. He is my great-great-great-Grandfather. (I may be leaving out a "great" in there, I don't feel like counting back how many generations it goes!)

Here is a link regarding one of my ancestors!

My mother has the book, and I've read it. Needless to say, I'm not proud to call him an ancestor. :(

My Dad was born in Kentucky & raised in West Virginia. :D

yep lots of them.

On American soil one of my ancestors was George Washingtons personal bodyguard. I always thought that was kind of cool. The funny thing is I met a friend here a few years ago and I was always very protective of her ( she was going through a really rough spot) turns out she was a direct descedant of George Washington, isnt that strange??

Also on American soil not that means anything to anyone here but in Idaho its a big deal lol, my relatives were part of the first wagon train to Idaho they have towns named after them and lots of things written about them at the museums ( they also saved one of my greatx3 Uncle's cabins and restored it, pretty cool)

The Scotland side is full of Royalty begining with the 1st Duke of Normandy. :)

Of course there are a fine share of drinking scallywags, rabble rousers and a few back country preachers too. ;)

oh and for anyone in NH my Greatx6 Uncle ( I think ) was John Goffe of John Goffe's Mill. :)

I am distant relation to the Prime Minister of Canada on my Father's side of the family. We were also Viscounts in France.

On my Dad's side I'm related to both Sir Isaac Newton and Horace Mann. I've no idea about my mother's side of the family.

Kim

Cousin is Bobby Richardson (2nd baseman for the Yankees ... later became Minister and performed service at Mickey Mantle's funeral

On father's side, related to Edgar Rice Burroughs, creater of "Tarzan" :)

Apparently I am related to Webster of Dictionary fame somehow but I'm not sure what the connection is.

My husband had an uncle a very long time ago, named William Wallace, I'll bet he didn't look a bit like Mel Gibson in Braveheart, though. This I'm sure of-- the genealogy checks out.

I have a great great(I don't know how many greats) grandfather who was Francis Scott Key. I don't know how accurate that genealogical research was, I haven't double checked all their work, yet.

Other than that I don't know of any nationally known famous ancestors that I have.

Now, I have a few infamous ancestors from East Texas and my husband had an uncle from East Texas who was a fairly famous appeals court judge, but only known in East Texas. His great great great Grandfather was a physician to Sam Houston when he visit San Augustine, Texas. He is even named in one of Sam Houston's books of letters. Once again this only makes him famous in East Texas :teeth:

I am related to Miles Standish the captain of the Mayflower. There has been a Miles in every generation since.

My dad's side, however, the only thing of significance that I've heard is that we've got a penetentuary named after us in England. LOL Pentonville. Anyone in England know about this place? I would love to find out more about it. Unfortunately my dad's side of the family is so screwed up. It would be so hard to do a Family Tree for his side. But I still would like to know about Pentonville Pen.

I have something similar. My great-grandmother (born post Civil War) was a Stamps, and there is supposedly a plantation of some sort in my family, possibly in Giles County, Tennessee. It must have survived the Civil War because she writes that she had been in it.

I also went to a Stamps Museum website that is in Tennessee, oh, how I would love to go to Tenn. and visit!

I also forgot that I might be related to President Jefferson Davis! His BIL was a Stamps, but I haven't checked out what branch this Stamps came from. What an honour it would be if I am related.

I'm related to Oscar Hammerstein from Rodgers and Hammerstein on my dad's side.
On my mom's side I'm related to a Duke from Wales.

If that is true, then you are also a cousin of the brilliant writer F(rancis) Scott (Key) Fitzgerald.

Really? Now that would be cool :teeth:

Hey, TREEFROG00,
On my dad's side, supposedly one of our relatives was a member of Frank and Jesse James' gang, so our relatives were hanging out together and creating lots of trouble.

My ancestors came over on the Mayflower and I am related to quite a few of them through marriages once they got to Plymouth so I heard, including Miles Standish and Priscillia Alden.

My DH is a distant cousin of the actor Jimmy Stewart
