I read about this in the paper today. A new thing is to add a contact to your cellphone address book named ICE. It stands for In Case of Emergency and you put an emergency contact number.

Basically if something happens to you the paramedics may use it to contact someone to find out if you have any allergies, etc.

::yes::

hi all,
the best thing you all can do is have I.D. on you at all times.we "rescue workers"do not go thru peoples wallets or cell phones.alot of us in nyc have never even heard of this before and the "dis"was the first place i read about this and told my guys.with ID the police can find out alot about you including, where you live, home phone # and so much more.they will not give out any info over the phone,we are not allowed to do so because of the hippa law.a police officer will go to your house and usualy drive your love one in the police car to the hospital.think of it like this do you really want your loved one driving themselves worried sick about you,not know really what is wrong or what happened to the hospital.also in very bad accidents cell phones get burned, smashed, broken and yes a select few slime bags have been know to pretend to help just to rob the person and be long gone before any emergency vechile is there..i have seen some drivers license's survive alot more.even when the rest of the car or house or person did not .they usualy melt a little around the edges but id #'s or names are usally clear as day.

Yes. Of course each time my husband calls me and ICE comes up I think who the heck is this. LOL :rotfl:

I do ~ I heard about it here on the Dis and added it to my phone after the London bombings.

I have it there now. I have two ICE numbers listed. (Home and then my sister who lives out of state). I learned about ICE on our local news, so it's something our local rescue people know about.

Yes, I did it when I first heard about it a few weeks ago. It makes a whole lot of sense.

But, MrFDNY, what if a person lives alone? Would you be able to contact next of kin just by the license info? My license says I am an organ donor, when I lived alone, it did not say who my parents or siblings were.

Have to agree with mrfdny. My doctor has mentioned wearing a bracelet for a med I take. I really should, but from what I've seen, those things aren't cheap! :faint: And I've yet to find "just" the bracelet. They all now hook you up into their computer data base with all your info. Hmmm. And let's not forget the yearly membership fee in addition to the price of the bracelet. I can't keep my own meds straight in my head at this point. I'll have numerous bracelets! :scared:

Disney1fan2002...Good question. I'm interested to see that answer. Do the files through our drivers' licence also include family related info?

hi all,
I have never run a driver lic. so I'm not real sure what kind of info is there, but i will try to find out for you guys exactly whats on em.this is the job of the police here in nyc.here's what i have seen happen.most times the news is not good at all.if people are able to contact thier own next of kin then the nyc police would not have too.most times the police are able to id someone thru their lic. number and go to thier house.most cases neighbor's provide the most info about next of kin, if not the police are able to get into the home and snoop around looking for a personal phone book.most time's the best info is found on the refridge.lets say you have no I.D. on you and something very bad were to happen to you.Its a waiting game.what they (nypd) do is wait until one of your loved ones call 911 to report that thier very worried cause they have not seen or heard from you in a couple of days.the police get there and file the a missing report.another precent see's the report cause they all are automaticly sent to every precent(police station)then bob a policeman says to his partner hey john doesnet that sound like or look like that poor girl/man in that bad accident the other day.the partner says maybe.so they call the detectives assignied to the case let them know that a unknown from a accident/fire/murder,fits that describtion and what happened to them, where they are know.and thats how your found.on a few rare times the family calls 911 to report that thier love one is missing and thier at the home and no answer and they can't get in for a couple of days.they send me to take the door. It's a automatic response if a 911 caller states that a person is missing and that thier at thier home and no one is answering the door and they can't get in.sometimes we get there and family tells us the person's names and what they look like.and what type of car they drive and then it will hit me or one of they guys I'm with.a accident or something that we responded too from a day or 2 or week ago.that was it.perhaps in other states this 'ICE" would work, but here in nyc not the case like i said i never heard about it before the dis told me and i am a rescue worker and non of my guys heard of it before i told them i learned it on the dis.we are not allowed to give any info over the phone out because of the new hippa laws.also like i said in nyc if your in a bad accident a lot of slime bags will rush over only to pretend to help,to steal anything in thier view worth anything including your cell phone and run away as they hear sirens.as for the organ donor stuff here in nyc it's written right on your lic.on the back of it,what you wish to donate certain organs only or all and to what cause, life saving and transplant but no medical testing or research.

Thanks for all the info mrFDNY,,,very helpful....I do have my ICE numbers in my phone,,but also carry ID all the time,,,it seems to me if our drivers license can with stand all it does,,,they should have it set up to where we could add are MEDIC ALERT stuff to the back of it some how,,,,

Yeah I believe it's widely used in Europe but spreading to the U.S. Great idea if you ask me.

Thanks for that explanation, mrfdny. Interesting. So we could all possibly be John Doe's if a crook takes our wallet with the license. Geez. Especially the females I would think...grab the purse and run. :sad2: Maybe better chances keeping emergency info in the glove compartment. Still, that's not on you if something happens walking down the street.

Yep. I have each number that my husband can be reached at, his name, and "husband" after it. I also have my moms info with "mom" after hers. I want to cover all bases, lol. I also carry my lisence at all times. If I ever run out of the house and not take my purse, the first thing I worry about is, "what if I get into an accident??? They won't know who I am!" So, I always try to remember it.

Another instance where the ICE can come in handy is if you leave your cell somewhere. I work at a bank and we have had many cell phones left on the counters. One time there were NO NUMBERS at all on the phone. We wanted to call someone but had no idea who it belonged to. Thankfully a little old lady realized it was gone and backtracked. I know it isn't an emergency situation, but it is just something simple that can help get the phone back.

Yes, we all do. I heard about it while I was putting around Beacon Hill. They were demonstrating it there to make people aware. I'm sure it will catch on eventually, why wouldn't it?

I have ICE in my phone, and I put myself as ICE in DH's phone.

yes I have ICE on my phone... Good idea eeyore kelly, I'll go and add myself to DH's phone as ICE
