Do YOU have an accent/specific dialect when you speak??

Well people guess right away I am from Boston and I am glad of that. Since I was a theatre major, I actually took "Voice and articulation" as a class that specifically is geared towards getting rid of accents. I can speak without the boston accent if I have too (and will often if I am doing a presentation), but I like people being able to know where I am from.

I have been told I also have a slight (and I would say very slight) southern accent on some words...guess it was the 4 years in South GA that caused that to happen.

I have read that they do encourage TV and movie people to speak with a more midwestern accent.
Thanks Sonya, that explains part of it.

Do all of you hear Midwestern on TV, too? Besides the obvious, Daphne, Dr. Kovatch, Dr. Corday (as mentioned)?

And, thanks Buck & Elaine for at least saying I don't talk like Dan but then, I don't hear anything wrong with how he talks! :p

So, it seems the majority here feel that East Coast, Southern, Canadian and overseas, of course, have accents &/or dialects.

Does it interfere with your TV viewing??

I tried to consciously listen today but, with PBS, Disney & Nick on most of the day, it was hard to notice anything. I did notice on Friends though but, it was only Joey, who talks with a slight NY accent, you'd think all or more of them would talk more NYish since the show is set there, right?

Thanks for all the replies! :teeth:

Mine is mild southern unless I'm around very thick-accented Southerners, then it's all the way, y'all!!

Well, I sure do...................I from Wiggles county so I talk like The Wiggles.

But the same applies to us Aussies as it does to those in England, Scotland & Wales. Depends on where you're from as to how much accent you have. The guys down south have a little different accent to us Queenslanders, so no two are the same. We also use different words (terminology), once again depends on where in Oz you're from.

The Californians have a bit of an accent but nothing like the New Yorkans do......................the New York accent is so broad compared to California. Haven't spoken to any other Americans other than some from some place I can't think of right now. Where the Winter Olympics were held. They had similar to California but with a slight twang attached.:)

In Hawaii, our "accents" are referred to as "pidgin English." For myself personally, I noticed it depends on who I'm talking to. If I'm talking to someone who speaks a lot of pidgin, I will speak pidgin. If I'm talking to somene who speaks "proper English," I tend to speak that way too.

I guess the best way to describe pidgin is a lot of words are not ennunciated. So "kind" turns into "kine", "the" is "da", "three" is "tree".

As far as "mainland" accents go, I usually only recognize southern, NY, and Boston accents. Most of the people on TV speak the same to me, except for the obvious like you mentioned (Daphne, etc.).
