Do you have a VERY original costume idea?

I was wondering how creative folks in here are. Do you have an idea for a great costume? What have you done in the past that others thought was VERY original? My idea this year is for me to dress as a hippie and DH to dress as a monk. Can you figure out what we would be together?????

Come on every Mother would LOVE one evening of it!

Cute idea...I didn't figure it out, but it's late !!

Last weekend our family went to our church costume party and after rushing around to put together everyone else's costumes, I only had a couple of minutes to figure out what to do for myself. I wrapped some quilt batting around my neck and went with my "head in the clouds". DH was the Tooth Fairy (hysterical ). He wore a tulle skirt (over black shorts), t-shirt, wings, a tiara, and carried around a bag that said "Old Teeth". He also wore several buttons on his chest that said things like "What's under your pillow?" and "Do you believe?" The reactions he got ran the gamut from "Eeeeeewww!" to "That's the funniest costume I've ever seen!" A couple of years ago, he was a Chick Magnet. I sewed a couple of dozen yellow fuzzy (Easter type) chicks all over a grey turtleneck. Last year he was a flasher...when he threw open his trenchcoat, he flashed people with his camera strobe. We've had a lot of fun with costumes the past few years!

One year we had as a costume, wear a white tee with horizontal black stripes. White pants , a gondolier type straw hat with a red band carry a tin cup, wear sunglasses and go as a "Venetian Blind". Probably not politically correct today but a good play on words.

One year my husband and I went as used Barbies, and people were crying when they figured it out! I wore a long blond wig, cut the bangs unevenly and very short, teased it into a mangled rat's nest, added a tiara, and walked around with a brush hanging from one of the many knots in my hair. My dress was a mess of bright pink feathers, tulle, sequins (all ripped up, of course), and I carried all the requisite pink feathered accessories (pocketbook, featered pen, etc). I tucked one arm into a sleeve, so it looked like I was missing a limb. My husband plastered his hair into a Ken style, wore a tuxedo jacket and a gold bow tie (without a shirt underneath), bathing suit bottoms, a dress show on one foot, a work boot on the other, and a tool belt. We were quite a sight!

two girls came to my house as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich last year.

large foam pads (like the stuff you get at the craft store for making cushions) for bread attached to one side of each of them.

Very cute and orginal - all home made.

- lori (one year we went to the MNSSHP and i made myself a Tinker Mommy costume to complement my son's peter pan. Tinker Mommy is more conservatively dressed than Tinkerbelle. Light green dress/tunic, tan capri pants, tennies died to match dress with pompoms attached at toes, pair of wings.)

You OBVIOUSLY have kids. Honest to God, all my daughter's Barbies look the way you described, especially the hair!! And her Ken too (until his head popped off) - never had matching shoes!!

I was thinking this year of buying a blue sweat suit and spray painting a white spiral on the front of the shirt.

I thought twice, and thought it might be in bad taste so I ended up buying a costume.

When I was growing up, there was a lot of road construction going on in our town one summer so my neighbor decided for Halloween she was going to be one of those construction barrier barrels. She spray painted a large piece of foam neon orange and wrapped it around her body like a barrel, wrapped yellow reflective tape around the foam to hold it in place, and had a yellow blinky light on her head. It was very original

Back a few years ago when all the Firestone Tire scandal was going on, we were at PI at their costume contest. There were some amazing costumes there, but one of the most simple that got a lot of attention (she went on to the finals) was a girl dressed in a pair of "greasy" coveralls carrying a flattened tire around her shoulder, "bubba teeth, Firestone Tire Inspector written on her back AND BIG "POP BOTTLE" EYEGLASSES.

Funniest costumes I've ever seen: two girls, one dressed head-to-toe in red, one in head-to-toe yellow. Each had a large thermometer on her chest. One was "scarlet fever" and the other "yellow fever". Too funny!

Not only do I have kids, but I have two younger sisters and vividly remember the products of our "creativity" when we were young!

I tried to talk my son into going with a friend...one would be dressed as a hot dog and the other as a glass of beer and they would be "frank and stein" - come on...appropriate for halloween!

BTW, loved the "peace and quiet" idea Lilallybean!

My sister held family Halloween parties for several years and we all tried to outdo each other in the "originality" category for costumes. Some notables were:

Tea bag - large square "bag" made out of fabric interfacing, sewn together with openings for head, legs, arms. Bottom filled with fall leaves from outside; paper "Salada" tag hanging from head.

Barber Pole - same as above, but sewn closer to body, red spiral stripe painted on, hat made to look like top of pole

Basket of dirty laundry - bottom cut out of old, plastic laundry basket; suspenders tied on and then slipped over shoulders to hold basket up (basket covered from mid-torso to upper thigh). Several items of clothing hanging out all over basket ie: pantyhose, undies, etc; some also stapled to shirt. One pair of pantyhose hanging from ear.

Cool Whip Dollop - White fabric made into "sack" (like the Hershey kiss costumes), but twisted slightly and sewn to give it the signature Cool Whip "swirl". Hat made to look like the top of the dollop, complete with that little "loop".

We haven't had the parties in a few years....they were always such fun!

Last year, my DD (age 13 at the time) wore her grubbiest sweats and rattiest sneakers with a tiara and a sash that said "Miss Understood" An appropriate title, given her age at the time

My friend is going to be Martha Stewart. She's going to wear an orange jumpsuit and a frilly apron.

Last year, another friend's husband dressed as Cruella DeVil. The funny part was that he has a full beard. They have twin dd's (2 years old) who they dressed as Dalmatian puppies.

I once went as Tipi Hedrun from "The Birds". I got an old fashioned looking ladies suit with skirt from Salvation Army with an old purse. Made bird droppings all over with white-out, wore ripped stockings, added a little fake blood, had my hair half coming out of a bun. Stapled on several homemade paper seagulls. It was a hit!

during the 10/17 MNSSHP we passed a family dressed as Fast Passes. They used posterboard to make sandwich board type things they had draped in front and back of them. The "art" on them looked very realistic too. One of my friends who was with us was wondering if they took a fast pass to a copy shop and had it blown up really big or if someone was just that good with graphic design. We talked about that being a neat idea for the "next trip" where we could make tee shirts that looked like a fast pass.

I went to the Miss America Pagent last year and there were a couple of middle aged women there "dressed up." They were Miss Demeanor, Miss Understood, and I think there was a third lady, Miss Behave. They wore pagent type sashes with these names on, and were an absolute hoot. I wanted to do that at last year's MNSSHP, but my friend wouldn't go for it (not the pagent type, lol).
