I go by my full first name, which is Suzanne. However, lots and lots of people seem to think it's ok to give me a nickname. So I am often Suzy (detest!!), Sue, Suz, Susanna (for the Spanish speaking relatives) and Susan (My Name is Not Susan....). I usually just let them call me whatever they want because it's too much trouble to get them to understand that I really don't like it. But I always introduce myself to new people as Suzanne and hope they "get it".
As for my kids, I gave them names that can have nicknames (that aren't irritating to me, lol!) just so they could have options. So my son is Nathanael and could go by Nate, Nathan, Nathanael or Harry (his middle name). When he was little people would sometimes call him Natey, but it didn't stick. He is 15 now and prefers to go by Nate, which is fine by me because I always, always, always call him Honeybunny, even in front of his friends and even if I'm angry. Although when refering to him in the third person I always call him Nate. He has yet to express a desire for me to stop
My daughter is Allyson, so she could go by Allyson, Ally, Al or Rose/Rosie (her middle name). Despite the choices, she goes by Allyson. Some people might call her Ally sometimes, but it isn't the norm. My best friend calls her Ally Cat, which I don't understand, but....whatever, lol! A few years ago she expressed a desire to have a nick name like her brother. I tried tons of them and just could not find anything that rolled off the tongue comfortably like Honeybunny does to me. So when I remember I try to call her Baby Girl since she likes it, but it's usually just Allyson. I'll pay for the psychiatrist appointments later on, I guess.
I don't know why, but some nicknames just irritate me. I cannot stand it when I hear people call girls "Sissy". When I was growing up in NYC, the word sissy meant weak. Since moving here to the South, I understand people use it to refer to the sister in the family. This annoys me on many levels, the main one being that it strips the child of her identity merely refering to her by her position in the family. And what's worse is the families that do this with multiple girls in the family. Ugh. Drives me nuts! Plus it sounds so stupid to me!
I also have trouble with nicknames that aren't words but more just sounds, (Bobo, Ray Ray, LoLi) and ones that are so commonly used that they don't really "belong" to just that person (Buddy, Skip, Bubba). I much prefer shortened forms of a person's actual name. Clearly, though, I am breaking my own "rule" by calling Nate Honeybunny, so.......
Great thread!
