While attending my younger DB's Graduation, a former teacher of mine, came over to me, to say hello. After a few minutes, he inquired where Gilbert was?

I thought for a minute, Is he losing it? Does he think I'm someone else? He stood there giving me, the oddest look. He probably wondered, what was up with me. :confused3

Then, younger DB appeared by my side, I felt relief no longer alone, with my former teacher.

They greeted one another. DB: Mr. *****. Mr.*****: Gilbert. Yes this is DB's birth name. However, for the first 20 yrs of our lives, we called him BUD or BUDDY.

I'm pretty sure, I must have heard Gilbert, at least once before his Graduation, but maybe not!

Do you have a Nickname?

Yes, but the Demon Beast of the Seventh Level of the Eternal Inferno doesn't really 'sing' so it's not used very often.

Yup...everyone has a nickname in our family. Might be because most people can't really say our real names correctly. :P

DH and I both have nicknames. We have never gone by our given names. So on our wedding invitation it said:

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx
and
xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

(nickname and nickname)

Otherwise, people would have said, who is getting married????

I gave my daughter the name Sarah, hoping that people would actually call her by her given name. My granddaughters could not say Sarah, so they called her Ra Ra. And, it stuck. So for years people called her either Ra Ra or Sarah Ra Ra; some people still do.

Mine has a long story to it...in college a friend of my brother in his drunken haze couldn't find or remember my brother's phone number so he called me. I don't remember what he needed I think he needed someone to walk him back to his dorm to make sure he didn't get lost, I told him no and to call my brother. He started begging and for whatever reason couldn't say Stacy very well and it came out Stacy woo in woo....:lmao:....well I asked a few of my friends to come with me so I wasn't stuck alone with a drunken guy I didn't even like much and so when we finally found him in downtown he wouldn't stop calling me Stacy Woo in Woo....well my friends loved it and now it is shortened to WooWoo and I have been stuck with it ever since :rotfl2:

In grade school there were three other Danielles so they they did the whole "your first name plus last initial" which made me "Danielle L". They would not let me go by my middle name Rose (even though some people in my family called me "Little Rosie" since it was after my grandmother), but they would let me be "Danni" in school. My mother had a fit because I was the only girl and she wanted me to have a girl's name so I became "Danni Rose" which the school allowed and she tolerates.

Since I am the only girl in my family, my nickname is Sissy. Not a big deal but mom and dad are the only ones who can call me that. In 7th grade, I was late to school cause of a doctor's appt. and when dad dropped me off in the office and was talking to the principal(small town and my brothers went to that school too.) When he leaves he says "Bye Sissy!". I was mortified!!!! So for the rest of the year he called me Sissy. And in my yearbook, he wrote Sissy in it too. Took a long time to forgive my father.

I'm confused. Your brother's given name is Gilbert and you didn't know who the teacher was talking about? I guess I don't understand, maybe because I don't have any family members who exclusively use a nickname.

I have one. I play online games and part of a community and my name on there is INCUBUS but everyone calls me INC. the name has nothing to with the band years ago. So when I get with the guys I play with, they call me INC and people look us like what is going on and I call them by their names in the games

Until I started first grade, my nickname was Beth. For some reason, the nun who taught first grade decided I should be Lizzie, so I was Lizzie for 12 years of grammar and high school. Once I was out of there, I went back to Beth. Fast forward 42 years until I reunited with a classmate, who lives only five minutes from me, (although we didn't know it for 23 years). She still calls me Lizzie most of the time, Beth some of the time, and has introduced me to people as "Lizzie-no-beth" LOL!!! I most definitely prefer Beth.

Beth

Well everyone in my family (mom, dad, 3 boys and a sister) has a middle initial "E".
I am the only one that has a nickname that begins with E. Ed

That's right, I never knew it was not Bud. Our whole young lives growing up.
Also, neither he nor our older DB, knew my christian name was Janie, I was only called Jane. We laughed about it after our parents passing.

My Mother's father was Gilbert, her DB was as well. So nicknames were used.

This is not uncommon, in families with generational names. To know whom one was talking about.

Etc. In my DH immediate family there are 4 Josephs. So his Grandfather was called by his middle name. Then, his father was Joseph, his DB Joe, and Dnephew Joey.

My husband shares his father's name, so he has ALWAYS gone by his middle name and I frequently forget that it isn't his real first name. His "real" name is Joseph, and I have to laugh when some telemarketer/salesman calls and asks for "Joe" like they are long lost friends. If anyone asks for Joseph or Joe I give them the brush off.

Similarly, I never changed my last name when we got married. So frequently I get calls asking for Mrs. *******. If I think it is a telemarketer I will say, I'm sorry, there is no one here by that name, or I'm sorry, Mrs. ******* lives in Maine (meaning my MIL).

We don't use nicknames in our family. So.... it cracks me up when we watch Honey Boo-Boo on TV and hear the nicknames they use for all of their friends and family. :)

I go by my full first name, which is Suzanne. However, lots and lots of people seem to think it's ok to give me a nickname. So I am often Suzy (detest!!), Sue, Suz, Susanna (for the Spanish speaking relatives) and Susan (My Name is Not Susan....). I usually just let them call me whatever they want because it's too much trouble to get them to understand that I really don't like it. But I always introduce myself to new people as Suzanne and hope they "get it".

As for my kids, I gave them names that can have nicknames (that aren't irritating to me, lol!) just so they could have options. So my son is Nathanael and could go by Nate, Nathan, Nathanael or Harry (his middle name). When he was little people would sometimes call him Natey, but it didn't stick. He is 15 now and prefers to go by Nate, which is fine by me because I always, always, always call him Honeybunny, even in front of his friends and even if I'm angry. Although when refering to him in the third person I always call him Nate. He has yet to express a desire for me to stop :rotfl2:

My daughter is Allyson, so she could go by Allyson, Ally, Al or Rose/Rosie (her middle name). Despite the choices, she goes by Allyson. Some people might call her Ally sometimes, but it isn't the norm. My best friend calls her Ally Cat, which I don't understand, but....whatever, lol! A few years ago she expressed a desire to have a nick name like her brother. I tried tons of them and just could not find anything that rolled off the tongue comfortably like Honeybunny does to me. So when I remember I try to call her Baby Girl since she likes it, but it's usually just Allyson. I'll pay for the psychiatrist appointments later on, I guess. :lmao:

I don't know why, but some nicknames just irritate me. I cannot stand it when I hear people call girls "Sissy". When I was growing up in NYC, the word sissy meant weak. Since moving here to the South, I understand people use it to refer to the sister in the family. This annoys me on many levels, the main one being that it strips the child of her identity merely refering to her by her position in the family. And what's worse is the families that do this with multiple girls in the family. Ugh. Drives me nuts! Plus it sounds so stupid to me!

I also have trouble with nicknames that aren't words but more just sounds, (Bobo, Ray Ray, LoLi) and ones that are so commonly used that they don't really "belong" to just that person (Buddy, Skip, Bubba). I much prefer shortened forms of a person's actual name. Clearly, though, I am breaking my own "rule" by calling Nate Honeybunny, so.......:confused3

Great thread!

My nickname is bang-em-up-(Baylee) because I've fallen so many times on my face! My other nickname is rose because that's my middle name (Baylee Rose)!

My DB "Bud" is almost 60 years old. Some names are not always, common when they are old!. ;)

I was named after my grandmother, Patricia, and I have way too many nicknames. When I was little I went by Misha and then when I got a little older I went by Trish/Trisha. My family still calls me Trish. When I got into middle school a teacher called me Patsy and it stuck. So I'm Patsy everywhere! One day someone went up to my mom and asked how is 'Patsy' was and she had no clue who she was talking about! A lot of people also refer to me as Pat or even more often as Pats. What is hard with long names though...is when someone assumes a nickname from your real name. Luckily Patsy has cured most people from doing it now....but when I was a kid some people would call me Pattie....yikes! Please...no...do not call me sandwich! Ha ha. So I at least learned not to call people nicknames until they have told me to first! But I do like having a long name which I can choose my own and plan to do the same with my kids.
