Do you have a favorite brand for digital camera?

I am gettting a digital camera tomorrow for my birthday. My husband asked a friend what is his favorite. He said HP photo Smart. I am looking around 200-300 tops. I have never used one before so I need some experienced opinions. Thanks alot for any help.

I have owned 2 Canons already... I find them easy to use and they take great pictures. When I upgrade again to a digital SLR, it will be a Canon again

I just bought the new Canon S410 digital camera and love it! The size is great and there are a lot of manual selections to set (color/ black and white photos, ISO speed, panoramic "stitching", etc.). It has 4 megapixels and the picture quality is great. It's really a neat little camera-can't wait to use it next month at WDW!

I have an Olympus and I like it a lot. Takes very good pictures.

There are 2 downsides to buying an olympus, and they may not be a factor for you ...

1) the new olympus cameras will only use Olympus' proprietary storage media, which is, of course, the most expensive one available. (mine uses SmartMedia, which is an open standard)

2) (this is the one that may not be a factor) If you're interested in underwater photography, there are housings available for Olympus cameras, but they're not made by Olympus, and thus, very expensive. (Some other companies, notably Canon, with their S-50 (and possibly others) makes their own underwater housing, which is a bit more affordable.

Had two canons so far, and 1 kodak. Had to trade in my Kodak for another camera when it stopped working on day. Worked with the friend's kodaks also. One camera had to go back because it was defective.

Friends don't let friends use Kodaks.

Although I'm sure there are plenty o people that like Kodaks, I just personally dont.

If offered an extended warranty, take it. Digitals are much touchier than regular SLR cameras - the warranty will help. Well, unless you break the LCD...

Definitely Canon.... I've turned my entire family onto them!!!!! I have the S400, my parents have the S300 and brother has the S200.... we LOVE them!!!! They are so easy to use and take wonderful pictures.

Kodak!!! I love my Kodak DC4800. It is not made anymore, but it does a great job. I also have a Sony CyberShot 2.1 and it doesn't compare to the Kodak. Then again, I am not a big Sony fan. Been burned too much by them.

I have the Kodak DX6490. I really, really like this camera but it is a bit higher than your price range, at least in stores. Maybe you could find it cheaper on the net.

I have two friends with the Sony cybershot P92 and they both love their cameras and they take excellent pics. The price is the best thing. About $230 for 5.0 mega pixels.

I'm a big Cannon fan here. We have the A70 (the A80 just cam out) and love it. It's easy to use and has just the right amount of options. It's also very affordable. Good luck.
