I have a facebook and myspace. but I'd rather be on myspace.

I don't have an account. It sounds like Facebook is getting popular, yet I don't have an interest in creating an account. I spend enough time on the computer already and I'm usually behind in emails I'd like to send to family/friends. Adding another website to frequently visit would be too much.

I'm curious to see how mainstream Facebook accounts are.

Yes, I do. It's an easy way to keep up with friends and family. :) I much prefer it over myspace.

I put yes, but maybe I should have put other simply because my wife and I share a facebook account, and it's really her who uses it the most. We (she) have (has) about 210 friends on it, and I think 4 of them are actually my friends, while the rest are hers. She checks it almost every day, while I pretty much only check it if she tells me one of my friends have written.
I do think it is an incredible concept, and a great way to keep in touch with people, but like Rick said, it does move really fast, and it can be hard to keep up with. Plus some people seem to have way too much time on their hands, and they keep poking you, or throwing snowballs or kidnapping you. And how many pieces of flair do you really want to receive from the same person?
We (she) mostly use(s) it to post quick messages to all of our friends and family, but we (she) really don't (doesn't) do any of the other "extras" that it offers.

it does move quickly, i set mine up so i can moniter the kid....but then a few freinds from here started tryingto get me into it, ii resisted until i got am e mail through there from my best friend from high school and he pointed out that a lot of our classmates are on there and now 25 years later we are all reconecting.

Yes! It's fun to catch up with friends with whom you've lost contact. My sister told me to get an account for months, but I finally started using it this summer. It's pretty fun. :thumbsup2

yes, and I love it. It's great to keep up with my nieces and nephew that live across the country

I recently started using Facebook when my friend passed away -- I started reaching out to old friends and classmates. I'm really glad I did.

Yes I do. I started it to monitor DD also but have become addicted. I have found many friends from high school and college.

I set up my account first, then let my teen daughter set up hers. She was amazed at how many of her friends parents had an account. The rule in our house is that I must know her password and be friends with her. She has as many adult friends (parents of her friends) as she does teen friends. It is a good way to keep in touch with long distance relatives and classmates. And, I was shocked that most of her friends wanted to be 'friends' with me. Does that make me a cool parent? : )

I have one and got so bored with the site so quickly that I never go there. I leave it up, though, in case that high school crush just HAS to find me...

Question: For those of you who use FB to keep in touch with family, how does that work beyond keeping in touch with emails? Are there special FB enhancements that make it easier to keep in touch? Would a private blog work just as well as FB?

Our whole family is out-of-state, but I'm pretty good about sending frequent emails and photos of the kids, especially to my parents. Some of the photos are ones I'd send to family but not ones I'd put on a website for all to see. How would FB enhance keeping in touch with family beyond sending regular email and photos?

Couldn't you set up a group that is private and you have to be invited to join?

Email is ephemeral. FB postings have more permanence. This is especially useful for photos and such.

Also a multi-way discussion on FB keeps the comments threaded correctly (chronologically) whereas email ends up branching as different people send their own replies, thereby divorcing those replies from sibling replies (replies to the same original message).

We're also finding, now, that all these extra applications are helping us appreciate certain aspects even better than static email could. We're making great use, now, of Living Socially within FaceBook, which allows each of us to post what we're currently reading (books), watching (television/movies), listening to (music), etc.

I agree. An example for me would be last week I was visiting family in Seattle. We went to a party that my SIL held. I posted photos on FB from that party and she tagged her family members in them that I am not friends with. And her nephews friends were there and he tagged them in them. It's a great way to share photos without clogging your email.

Before my SIL joined facebook, I only heard about what they were up to from my parents. Now we communicate so much more.

And I have re-connected with so many old friends from high school and old co-workers.

I used to like myspace better than FB, but now I find FB to be more user friendly.

My sisters, mom and I all play a word twist game together each day. One sister plays early in the morning, the other in the evening, my mom does it during work etc..... We also compete on a sudoku game now and then as well.
I guess the difference between e-mails and face book is usually if I'm sending an e-mail I'm writing about actual news that's going on. With the facebook I get the updates on the silly little things as well. This helps me feel more connected with family that lives so far away.
