We would like to have a basement in our next home. Do you like having one? Is it finished? What do you use it for? Do you want one in your next home? Aren't I nosey? :p

Yes, we have a basement and yes, it is finished. We have a guest room down there for the in-laws and it is quite spacious with its own bathroom and walk in closet. Another part of the basement has a playroom for the girls and the main room has a wet bar, sofa, tv, etc. for us to relax in. We really enjoy the basement and would want one in any future home we would get. (of course, we don't plan on moving! See my tag. I love my house!)

:hyper:

Oh I wish. Our first townhouse together had one, half finished, half laundry room. The our last house that we lived in had one that was great for storage. Living in Florida, you don't find many basements here:(

My parents' house does, but not here in the trailor ;) Apparently you can't have a basement in a trailor...nor can you expect the floor not to shake when you wash clothes, but that's another story.

At their house though, it's finished in that it has a floor (our neighbors' actually just has dirt, no real floor), but it is used as a laundry room, storage, and place for all the lawn and garden stuff to go. When you have a riding lawnmower, a pushmower, tiller, trailor for the riding mower, etc, etc, etc, you fill it up quickly. We also keep our home canned food and a lot of frozen stuff down there (big freezer).

We (ie, my parents- ha) have an unfinished basement that is both a sort of recreation room and the cat area. When one of my friends got new carpet in her house about six years ago, we took their old carpet and so now we have this big fluffy brown stuff on the floor which keeps our toes from freezing upon contact with the concrete floor. Since our family room television broke this summer (and the other one is in the basement conveniently positioned in front of the treadmill) the basement has become the place to watch TV, movies, or play Nintendo. Luckily for us we also have a couch down there that is good for sitting on (as opposed to whatever else you do with couches) and a recliner. It's actually a good hang out for having friends over but out of the way.

As for the cats, we have two of them and although they get free run of the house when we are home, we don't quite trust them with the "nice furniture" in the living room (I think we had a discussion before about not stepping foot in living rooms...well ours is definitely off limits for cats and they know that but if we aren't watching they sometimes try to sneak in!) if we are out, so their home is in the basement. Their food, water, litter boxes, toys, etc. are down there so it's also nice for keeping the rest of the house clean and free of kitty mess or odors.

I love having a basement- we didn't have one in our old house and it always comes in handy whether it's ushering the kids at a family party down to go play with the toys/games/movies or keeping the cats away from my ailurophobic grandmother or cooling off in the summer when the air conditioning isn't on but it's hot...basements are very multi-purpose! :)

(of course, side note here, now that I'm in college the basement is gone; I have half of a 10' by 15' room  )

My basement isn't finished, but is separated into 3 parts. Laundry room/junk hole/ computer network room. I had one room sectioned off for my hobby. other than that, I don't care what is down there. Basically it is for all the stuff I don't want people to know I have :p

Yes we have a basment. No it is not finished. It is used for starage and the washer/dryer are down there, as well as DH's workbench.

I'm in Texas... we don't have them.

But if I ever move to a place that does, I would love to finish it out for a family room or guest suite.

I have a basement. It isn't what is called a Michigan basement, meaning it doesn't have a dirt floor.

It's full of lots and lots of "stuff". We need to get a dumpster and get rid of a lot of that "stuff"

We have a basement and its not finished right now, but we are planning on finising it next year. We'll have one large main room which will be a family room/playroom. We're also putting in a guest room and a full bath. Where the furnace and water heater are will be a storage room and DH wants to have a workroom in the back.
Right now we have a couch and TV down there and some of the kids' toys that they don't play with that often. We got new carpet in two of the bedrooms when we moved in, so we put the old carpet down in the basement so the kids have somewhere to play. The kids don't want us to finish it off because in the winter we take their bikes and scooters down there and they can still ride them around. Can't do that once there are walls!! LOL!!

Yes we have a basement~Yes it is finished
Ours is a full basement & not a Michigan basement

basements??? What are basements???

I think my Aunt in NY had one for storage and her washer and dryer.. but are thye really basements out there!?!?:p ;)

Yes, I have a basement . I use it for .......... DISing :p .

It is totally finished just like the main floor of the house with drywall and carpeting and vinyl floor.

We have a finished laundry room, a family room with tv, fireplace, furniture and computer, an other room with my daughter's computer and my husbands remote control airplane hobbby stuff and a 2 pc bathroom.

I have a full finished basement, one area is a living room and the other half is a rec. room with pool table and bar... If you have kids, I don't know how you could live without one !!! my DS (16) and his friends hang out down there all the time (not at the bar :p ) my DD has sleepovers, (thank God I have the basement for those!) and my DH has his buddies over once in a while to play cards, shoot pool etc....(better than them being out at a bar!)
so tell me.... how can you live without a basement !??!

Yep.
We have a nice size area for storage and the rest is finished...If we could put the kitchen down here we could get rid of the 1st story and make our 2 story house a ranch...:jester:

We have a basement with cement floors and concrete block sides with some sides being poured concrete. It's full of junk that needs to be sold or given away. As of now, I can't be down there for long without my mask, because of my mold allergy, and that's with a dehumidifer running. I always want a basement because of tornadoes, that's were we go when we are on watch for bad weather.

No basements in Texas. I would LOVE to have one though because storage is always a problem.

Yes, we have a basement and my husband is in the process of finishing it off right now. :)

Yes, we have a full, finished basement. LOL, I actually don't consider it a basement as we spend most of our time down here.

My DH did all of the work himself, it took a long time but was way worth it. Half of it is an open room with the family room (a wood burning stove, TV, couches etc) at one end and the other end is my 'office'', computer desk, filing cabinet and walk-in closet.

The other half of the basement is divided by my eldest DDs bedroom with a walk-in closet, a full bathroom (which she 'claims' is hers) and the laundry room with a door that goes out to our patio. It doesn't feel like a basement because only 2 walls are under ground.

Also, we wanted to the two levels to flow together so you wouldn't feel like you were leaving the 'living space' to go down into a dungeon. We have oak hardwood floors upstairs, so he opened the dining room wall up and put in an oak railing and staircase so that the rooms sort of blend and the downstairs is more inviting. (if that makes any sense)

I love having a basement, I have never lived in a house without one. We use the attic for the 'junk'.LOL...

Ours is finished..when I was a kid it was our rec room...sort of got loaded with junk over the past 10 years but I have had it totally cleaned out and now it is an extra playroom for my dauhgter, I moved all her big toys down there...a TV and playstation and I want to get an air hockey table soon for down there.
