Do you give your phone number out to stores that ask?

A view from someone who had to ask for a phone number as part of their job. Who cares!!!! Give a false number. The ones that had to protest or add more drama to the cashier's life are taking a stand by doing what??? The cashier who is there to collect her paycheck is only doing what is asked. Chances are she is not going to speak directly to the owner of a chain to voice concern about phone numbers. Zip codes always blew my mind. How on earth is someone going to find you by your zip code????? I sometimes would plug in a phone number just so I would not have to deal with the "why."

Thank you thank you thank you for pointing this out! I get SO angry at people who get all up in a cashier's face for doing their job; I used to cashier myself and know very well how it feels. :thumbsup2
I agree but when the cashier rolls her eyes when I politely reply "my phone number is unlisted"...all bets are off.

I'm not giving out private OR false information just to make a cashier's job easier (as far as phone numbers go).

There is no drama, no fuss, I just say "sorry, I don't give my number out." If there's an issue after that, it's all on the cashier.

Exactly. :thumbsup2

Wow, where did I say that they should get a different job?????
NOWHERE! I want to make that 100% clear. NOTHING the OP - or anyone else in this thread) has said up to me reading what I just quoted indicates anyone DOES treat cashiers poorly when they try to enforce store policy.

It was just a general request (from a former cashier) made to everyone reading this thread, ever.

I just give them my old phone number that we don't have anymore.
But, again - why burden a stranger? Odds are, that phone number you don't have any longer DOES belong to someone. Why subject THAT person to whatever the store plans to do with the number, when they probably don't even shop there?

I don't give it, but if they insist, I give a fake one. :rotfl2: Why? Years ago, (long story short) I met a guy at a store who was handsome and flirtatious, but gave me the willies. Because I was filling out a store form with him, I had to give my info. He kept commando flirting, despite many reminders I was married. Finally, I had to get snippy with him and he went from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde in record time. :scared1: After that, whenever I went in that store, he would shadow me. Gave me the creeps.

Turns out, he was a freaking serial killer. He often met women via his job and lo and behold, he had my info. He had even lived in my neighborhood at that time. Worst of all, he had a specific ""ideal woman" and I fit it to a T. I may not be every man's dream, but I was his. :headache:

After that, no one gets my info. Nope.

:scared1: I'm guessing he got caught and is in jail right? How did you find out about it?

How about giving out the phone number of that service you can call when a guy asks for your number at a bar and you don't want to give it to him :rotfl2:. I think when the guy calls, he gest a recorded message. Maybe they should set one up those who don't want to give out their number when shopping, too! :thumbsup2

I don't shop much so there are only a few store that I go to that ask for my phone number. I usually give it to them because we have talking caller ID, so if the store does call and we have only had 2 that did, I just don't answer. The only ones that ever called were Limited 2 and CJ Banks and then they would leave messages about sales they were having.

I'm starting to feel like a phone number nazi. :lmao: Whenever I go to a store that asks for my number before they check me out, I *politely* tell them "Sorry, I don't give my number out" and at times it'll send the cashier into a tizzy.

Am I the only one? :rolleyes1

I tell them it is unlisted and to just enter the store's phone number. They are all happy with this.

I don't give it out. I also feel that it is a good example to set for my children. I hope they are learning that just because someone asks you for something, you don't have to automatically give it to them.

No I never give out my phone number, sometimes depending on my mood, I give a fake one, if the cashier is pushy about it.

That is what I do but only if they are really pushy about it. I can't remember what store it was but they claimed they couldn't check me out without a phone #. Fake number time! :rotfl:

Nope I don't give out my phone number but if they insist I usually smile and say 867-5309;) Once in awhile I'll get a giggle out of the cashier for that one:rolleyes1

I don't think I've ever been asked for a phone number except if I don't have my member's card with me (Von's, Barnes & Noble etc) Is it a regional thing? :confused3

:scared1: wow. That is just plain terrifying! I'm glad you're alright. That's just :scared1:

I do, I don't mind at all and I have never had any of them call me for anything, I am sure they use it for some reason, and frankly I don't care what the reason is.

If my phone number was unlisted then I would decline, but really this isn't national security, if they really want your phone number they can get it. I don't understand the big deal.

And like another pp, I will also give my SS# to my Dr. Have done this all of my life and have never been ripped off from that, but I have been ripped off using a cc# and debit card#.

Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant (wait, they're owned by the same company I think!), Toys R Us, Bath & Body Works, Shoe Dept are just a few I can think of off the top of my head that have asked for my number.

I used to work in retail, and it was the stores policy to ask for a postcode upon checkout. What got me was when people would say "no I don't want you to send me stuff". I hate to break it to you, but off all the thousands of people who live in your zip code, were not
going to track you down just by those 5 numbers sweetie!

We did have to ask for name adress phone etc details when doing a refund though, and boy would some people get shirty. Yes, I am entitled to ask, and yes, you are untitled to say no. But also realise that I can refuse the refund if you won't give me this info, so the choice is yours really, and yelling and fussing at me
won't change that.

What's even funnier, is when you ask someone for their zip code, and they look at you confused!! I've even had people ask me, I live in area, do you know the zip? Do I look like a post office?

No.
