Do you get trip cancellation/Interuption insurance?

Hey fellow disers,

Just wondered if you purchase trip cancellation/interuption insurance? I just booked our flight and hotel today and wondered if I should look into it. If so, where is a good place to purchase it from? We already have medical through DH's work. Thanks for the help!!

I highly recommend travel insurance, you never know what could happen!!! I sure wish we had hade it when we stuck in Orlando Sept 11, 2001!!!

I am also in Fergus. i am just lurking on this board as I am planning a Disneyland trip for March 2005.

I believe you can only buy travel insurance from the travel agency that you purchased your trip through. If you purchased it direct you should be able to buy it through Disney and or the airline.

There are several different opinions on cancellation insurance. You must remember that it does not cover pre-existing conditions. So if you have an ill parent or family member already diagnosed or seeking medical attention then that particular condition is not a covered risk. If you however have an appendix attack the day before you leave (this happened to me!) you would be covered. The trip interruption portion is when something unforeseen happens while you are on holidays and you need to get home in a emergency. It will pay for a one way ticket home. It would also refund the balance of any accommodations you do not use. Depending on the airline, most of them (Southwest, JetBlue, AC etc.) will give you a travel credit to be used within one year so you don't actually "lose" you money but you don't get a refund.

I personally take it unless the airline has such a stipulation.
You can purchase insurance from any travel agent even if you did not buy the trip there. You must provide them with an invoice of the price you paid and they can still sell it to you.

Up until this past March, we had purchased travel insurance for some trips but not others.
In March 2005, we purchased insurance for a trip planned about 4 weeks in advance. We did so because of unwell grandparents and were not sure if we would have to cancel. Thankfully all grandparents are still well! We did, however, have to use our insurance as our flight out of Toronto was delayed by 13 hours and we missed our cruise ship. As we had booked everything with Transat Holidays, Air Transat flew us to our first port and put us up in an all-inclusive resort for 2 nights until our ship arrived.
We were reimbursed by insurance for 2 nights of our cruise. My sister and her husband were also travelling with us and had their new digital camera stolen on our first night on the ship. They received 100% of what was paid for the camera from the travel insurance as well.
I am now a firm believer in buying travel insurance! You just never know what can happen.

Anyone have any info on insurance for Hurricane season? We are flying SW Sept 18 and I read their policy. They will basically get you there as soon as they can or refund you the $$ if they can't - which I think is fine. I guess I am wondering if for some reason we can't get to Orlando, or get stuck while we are down there, is there some type of insurance I should look at for us? We never purchase insurance (I know, not smart) so I really don't know anything about it. Thanks. aw:

We purchased trip cancellation/interruption insurance for our trip last Aug/Sept. We ended up being there during hurricane Frances, which meant that the Orlando airport was closed. Since we were flying out the next am we called our insurance company and they said that if we couldn't get home (we couldn't get another flight out for at least 5 days) they would start the claim process and would cover any expenses (accomodations, food, increases in airfare to get us home) until we returned home. Thankfully the airport opened at 12:00pm and we were booked on the 12:15pm flight home (although delayed 4 hours). We didn't have to use it, but we're sure thrilled we had it in case things hadn't have worked out.

I would highly recommend it. I'm in the process right now of getting quotes from different companies for our Dec. trip.
