Do you find yourself defending Disney?

Hi There. I have never posted on this forum but am a regular visitor. I recently attended a business function and used my Disney suitcase. I sort of felt my coworkers were snickering at it. I get very upset by other people's reaction to Disney. I don't make fun of people who wear their favorite sports teams or pass judgement on their hobbies. Is it that people are ignorant? They feel Disney is just for kids? What is up with this?

I figured this would be the perfect place to see if anyone has had similar experiences. I also know noone here would feel like that.

Thank you for reading. Three weeks till my trip!!!!!!!!!

I get made fun of all the time for being a WDW lover.. People just dont get its just not for kids. I guess you have to be young at heart to understand that. Its a good way to look at it you know? I try to not let it get to me.
Two weeks until my trip!!

Yes! I am very passionate about Disney. Some may say obsessed with, but I prefer the term "passionate". I was telling someone about our up coming trip. She said,"Weren't you just there in Nov? There are are theme parks you know." What? No, there isn't...

I've been defending Disney for as long as I can remember!!! When I was an Asst. Mgr. at a Disney Store and technically a Disney cast member (12 yrs ago), I found that anyone who discovered what my job was felt the need to bash Disney as much as they could in my presence (also found that when I was pregnant, people always loved to tell me the absolute worst pregnancy/birth horror stories they could come up with... what gives?!?!? :rotfl: ) I think it's just something about people that when they find you like something, they feel the need to bring it down..... so just spread whatever Polyanna Pixie dust you have and try to make them see some happiness :) :goodvibes

Welcome to the DIS Margaret!! Nice to have you with us. Yep, I find myself 'defending' Disney all the time. I see so many rolled eyes coming at me. But, it no longer bothers me. My favorite comment is..."Oh, you're going back there again? Don't you get tired of it?" Ah, no, not any more tired of it than you when you go to the same beach house year after year!!! Different strokes for different folks. I use my Disney luggage all the time. Dh has actually used it for business as well. He likes the size of one particular bag. Nope, I no longer worry about the comments or funny looks. I am secure in my Disney obsession!!! :mickeyjum

Hi...welcome :teeth: My DH has been a great sport and just goes with the flow of the whole Disney thing, so I am lucky. I am also lucky that 2 of my closes friends are Disney junkies.....but then there is everyone else :guilty: . My mom and dad don't get it at all ( yup, their fault for bringing me 2x's as a child). They always have little comments, don't you think your kids would like to go else where, it cost way to much $, I can't believe you would even think about taking a trip w/out your kids etc...My co-teachers can't believe that I would want to go on vacation ( even if not taking my own) to some place that there will be thousands of child. I just try to remind myself, if this is what makes me happy, and for the most part DH,DS's and DD, then so be. :thumbsup2

:welcome: Margaret aka IluvBelle!!

I don't have to defend WDW too much. Most people are interested in my experience. My coworkers certainly ate the Mickey Krispie treats up fast enough without a word!!

Anyway, there are a couple people that trash it ... and while I defend WDW, I just find I don't want to talk to these people at all ... I mean I want to avoid ALL talk with them. I feel the same way when finding out a coworker HATE cats -- I don't want to talk with them after that -- you know what ... I just realized the people at my work that trashed WDW also hate cats ... maybe a connection there ...?? :confused3

I don't defend it, but I do point out to the male members of my family that it is just like them being able to rattle off who had the most RBIs in 1962 or whether Ted Williams was the greatest hitter ever or whatever. :)

Different strokes for different folks.

I dont ever feel that I have to defend it because most people just don't understand why a grown man would want to go to Disneyworld. So right there, I know they are clueless. If anything, I just try to tell them that they should definitely go atleast once to experience it.

I find that the people who criticize me for going to WDW or liking Disney in general are just jealous.

Most of those people never go anywhere. If they do then it's without their kids.

I'm told I spend too much to take my family to WDW. No. I choose to spend my money a different way. There are many people in my area who spend over $100 a week to play bingo. Bingo is Wed, Fri and Sunday night. There are people who write bad checks to churches who run bingo. Do I look down on them? No, because that makes them happy sitting with their friends hoping to win. Bingo makes them happy. The same with going to the bar on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That adds up, but it makes them happy. Same with the casino, or eating out at expensive restaurants, or buying name brand clothes or $400 Coach purses, etc.

Life is too short to worry about what others do. Those who criticize me for wearing Mickey flip flops, carrying Disney luggage, having Disney cookie jars, etc. are just jealous. People who spend their time criticizing and putting down what other people like are just miserable ogres. That's my opinion anyway.

Thank you all for the welcome wishes and sharing your view points. I'm so glad I found this site and happy to finally participate. Now if I can just figure out to make the posts and my login prettier!!

All of us here can certainly relate. I know someone who went to WDW once and thought Epcot was boring and that Diseyland is much better than Disney World, lol. She also never made it to AKL or MGM when she went. Our experience with WDW came a few years after hers and now we're planning a trip back. She can't believe we're going back so soon. So soon?! We went in '04 so a trip is long overdue. :teeth:
