picture edited to show DANCE moves :rolleyes1

I find it offensive that another poster refered to cheerleaders as dressing and dancing to make a stripper blush.

Eddited to add:
the EXACT comment that set me off was:

"Oh the irony. How many of you saying "no Hooters shirt" are cheer moms? I have seen these routines, and the girls of all ages are wearing skimpy skirts, make-up that would make a stripper blush, and suggestive dancing/movements. Justify that. "

that is such crap-
funny thing is I hated cheerleaders -
until DD decided she liked it - and I had to let her try it - hoping she would hate it -
well 5 years later and here we are - and I can not BELIEVE that athletisism it requires! some uniforms are a bit much but as others stated - what about swimmers? figure skaters? Gymnasts?

I don't really get it. :confused3 I don't find the photo offensive. And I don't think I'm quite getting the context of what the other poster said. Was there another thread about this?

I don't find that remark offensive, I find it to be true.

PattyT...your gym is hosting a competition on Dec 3...right? We'll be there!!!

Melissa :cheer2:

I don't find the photo offensive at all. I was a competitive figure skater for 14 years and heard from many people (that didn't know anything about the sport) that I looked like a hooker with all of that makeup on...well, in order for judges to see it from where they sit at the rink, it needs to be that gawdy! I don't wear it like that all the time! Also, skating dresses and outfits are just as short (probably shorter even) than cheerleading outfits and we had to wear those all the time.

If that's what the poster was referring too...they need to find something better to do with their time than judge other peoples children and their organized extracurricular activities!

I don't want to offend anyone myself but I often think that cheerleader's uniforms are way too short. JMHO

Prenatal agreement...no cheerleading. But that is MO. Honestly, these days those dance teams are much more 'offensive' than cheerleading.

Oh, is the pic offensive? No, not to me. And although I agree with the poster about the skirts tending to be really too short, the tops look nice--at least their bellies are showing.

I don't find it offensive at all. I look at cheerleading as a sport, and they are dressed for their sport. (very sweet) I don't know if someone took offence to this picture maybe because of the way they are sitting??

I think more offensive than that was girl we saw the other day who had her shin guards, socks, and spikes on still covered in mud going into a restaurant. My daughter plays soccer too and I would never nor would she want to walk in any place like that.

Not offensive at all. Maybe the context was something other than children. Coudl they have been talking about the Carolina Panthers cheerleaders and their off-the-field escapades last weekend? :earseek:

No, I don't find the photo offensive but I do agree with the some of the posters who said that cheerleaders skirts a very short anymore.

My DD was a cheerleader last year at her Catholic school. They were not allowed to wear the short, short skirts that most cheerleaders are wearing now. I think they wore the length that is more traditional. And they looked fine, although THEY thought they looked like dorks! :)

Anyway, it just looks like their skirts are really short.

Initially I thought that too... but I know what happenes to skirts when you sit down... they creep up... a LOT!

So from that pic, I couldn't tell anyway, but too long a skirt and it would possibly get in the way of cheering (with formations and the like).

How's that for not having a true opinion. They might be what I consider to short for cheerleaders, but again they might not.

That photo isn't offensive. Maybe the pole in front of the girls is! :rotfl2:
JK!

In the other posters defensive, I have to say that I can understand where that comment might have come from. Our town just had a thing about this. Some local HS cheerleaders were accused of performing too provacatively at hs games and functions. I'm definitely not a prude by any means. But having seen them perform myself, at a hs football game to the song "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy", I was floored by some of the moves they made, and was surprised that this was allowed at a high school event. They were forced to tone it down. Now I'm not saying that all cheerleades are like that, but I've seen it more and more, at least around our area.

granted they wear short skirts... but with big pants underneath... so why is that offensive and not gymnasts in leotards? or swimmers?

plus... all the make-up... i used to do ballet... and you have to PILE it on.. kids wearing red blush and lippie... just to make it seen from a distance!

i think that might be the case.... hopefully...

theres nothing offensive about cheerleading...I was competion for 3 years and when id go out in my make up (glitter lips and glitter eyes) people would talk about me! To the point where i went over to an adult who was trashing me about my uniform and such to her companion and said "So, you want to tell me about my self. You say that i look like a hooker. You dont know the first thing. I work so hard to wear this uniform and I wear to win a competion, not to be called a prostitute by some one who doesnt know a thing about this sport. This make up is so judges can see our facial expressions. You dont have the right to speak on this subject at all. Do not say anything about cheerleaders....I'll have you know my GPA is 4.0 and I will not have you stero typing my teammates who you think are horrible people because of what we wear for competions to win. When you have national titles then you can trash us...not before."

That was after i had heard enough from people about how my parents were horrible for dressing me like a hooker and how i was too young for that.

Im not a hooker...Im a cheerleder

I don't find the picture offensive. Normally I would say that the skirts are short but I know they need to be in order for the girls to move properly while they are cheerleading. As long as their wear their lollypops underneath no big deal.

I understand why they wear makeup. I was a dancer for many years. You have to wear a lot of makeup for the audience to see you. There were many little girls in the recitals with makeup on. Nothing major, just some color on their faces so they don't look washed out on stage. Also, those girls are covered up compared to what I had to wear. All I have to say is leotards and fringe skirts. :earseek:

I don't think that picture itself is offensive (except the girls probably could sit a little more lady like - legs together).

Some cheerleaders do dress and dance like strippers though. How could you tell how they were dancing from that pic?

But what if those were just short demin skirts on just any group of girls on the monorail?

I'm not one to complain about short skirts, I'm all for them, but I can see where people are coming from having seen the shorter cheer skirts, makeup, and modern routines.
