Do you feel being a parent limits the intellectual side of your personality?

From things as trivial as how electricity works, how many satellites there are in space, how a cell or cordless phone work, or as funny as "how do you know the light goes off in the fridge when you close the door?" (okay, so we did some research there :p), to very serious issues like "what happens when you die?", "is there really a heaven?", "how long as we going to have to fight the bad guys?", "are they going to try to hurt us again?" It's is very interesting and enlightening as an adult to see the world through a child's eyes. I highly recommend it. :teeth:

You should also note that there are a lot of people who are childless who talk incessantly about their pets, or workaholics who discuss nothing but their jobs, sport addicts who discuss nothing but sports, etc. To single out parents is unfair. :(

Pete's mom you bring up a really good point. The things that interest small children might not be many people's idea of intellectual stimulation but they can be really fasinating. I know I find myself explaining all sorts of things to DD throughout the day. Oh no, there I go talking about her again. Anyway, what do you think the market will close at today ;) .

I'd rather be talking about your cutie dd than the stockmarket!! ;) it's more fun ya know???

I started taking the time to post an "intellectual" response to your thread, but then decided not to bother. I am not even sure why I'm joining this gem of a thread, but it's just so "out there" that I had to add my  .

MY answer to your question is NO.

I could call ans ask my best friend who is a certified financial planner at Merrill Lynch, but alas, she has three boys and therefore intellectually lacking.

I agree 100%. Even an adult can learn a lot at museums and zoos and other venues that children enjoy. And learning will logically lead to new interests.

Anyway, making blanket statements doesn't require much intellect. A well-rounded person would realize that people differ wildly regardless of their lifestyle.

 trolls are expected on boards where catty women fight over the weddings they're planning or boards where men are discussing which sports team is the best....not here. Go away

I keep coming back to this thread to see what the responses are. I'll never understand why someone would plant one of these questions on a "Disney" board. Yes, there are plenty of single people around here, but I think it's safe to assume that most people have children or are interested in children's things. Isn't that what Disney is all about?

Can I tell you about Mr. R? He's the perfect example of how having children doesn't diminish one's intellectual ability but enhances it . Mr. R is one of the smartest, well-educated (Ivy MBA), committed people you could ever meet. His job is high-profile, very competitive and he works extremely hard. By all accounts he is what everyone would consider a "success". He's the guy everyone wants to sit next to at dinner parties because he's witty and fun to be around. He'll talk to anyone, about anything. But if you ask him about himself he'll tell you how his 10 y.o. daughter can throw the ball from home plate to second base or that his younger daughter has never missed a spelling word in 3 years. He can, and does, talk about all kinds of sophisiticated topics but he chooses to talk about his family. Does that make him boring? Not to me, that's why I married him. :lovestruc

(This isn't a brag or anything, I just wanted to point out that not all parents are "intellectually limited". I hope this is read in the spirit it was intended).

I just want to say for the record that if I ever had kids I would still consider myself intellectually superior to the majority of the population.:sunny:

(Now thats a joke, so don't get bent out of shape)

So, how long will this thread last?;)

I've never met a troll in person, so do they hang out at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot?

Hey, I used to have a friend that ALL she did was talk about her kids... all the time. I listened and sometimes brought up mine, but mostly listened. We talked a lot of Disney, too, but that's because we both liked Disney.

Well, during our last discussion (aka "argument") she accused me of not enjoying my kids because I don't talk about them! Give me a break, even I know that NOBODY likes to be bombarded with other peoples' kids ALL THE TIME!

So, with me, no you don't get my kids all the time. Sometimes, but not a lot. There ARE other things in this world to talk about and when I DO get out with other people taller than 4 feet high, I tend to like to talk about those OTHER things! ;)

So there. I think all people who are against children should go live on a private island and try to prevent extinction without procreating! lol...

You forgot fornicating too!!

I think we should all just stop having kids. Everybody. Then within a generation there will be no more intellectuals. Or maybe we should just take a few intellectually inferior women and label them as breeders. Sound like a plan?

In case any of you are wondering, I had absolutely nothing to do with this topic.
But I know if I had, certain people would be all over me as usual

I am glad there's people besides ME here who have the guts to say some of things that have been said. Call it "being a troll", but I call it speaking your mind.

Breeders :rotfl:

You forgot to refer to the children as carpet creeps, crumb snatchers, etc. ;)

My thought too BumCat...

In fact...i would make a wish that the OP show this thread to his/her parents....even with their limited intellect....they would take him/her on a trip to the woodshed....

Dogs and cats are better than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with questionable friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about buying the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and if they get pregnant, you can sell the results. "
my children don't ask for money all the time...ALWAYS come when called, don't hang out with questionable friends, don't smoke or drink,,don't wear my clothes.., have very modest wardrobes of their own..earned their own way thru college, if they get pregnant will bless me with wonderful grandchildren that I'm sure will be just as terrific as my kids have been..
dogs and cats will never mow your lawn, shovel your snow, wash your dishes..do chores around the house, drive you when you're not feeling well...help fix things around the house... take care of you when you get old..
