I'm new to this...are there any pros/cons or things i should know of(since i am used to logging off:rolleyes: )

Computer on continuously...always connected. But don't know why...cuz everyone else does????:o

I used to logoff every night and re-start every day but, that was mostly because of a problem with my dial-up automatically dialing-up when we weren't on, which tied up our phone line.

Now, the 'puter's on all the time. Move the mouse, click and, away we go! Only time I shut it down is when ctrl-alt-del won't fix some 'stall' or something or, when the printer gets goofy and thinks there's something still in the cue. Ugh, the trials and tribulations of high-speed! ;)

Enjoy shep!! :Pinkbounc

Hi, My brother works in computers and told me I should always log off of our dsl because leaving it open leaves you open for hackers to invade your computer. We have finacial info on our computer, therefore I would not want some one coming into my computer! You can get a fire wall to prevent this also. Although, I can not imagine why anyone would pick my computer!!
Hope that helps you!

:D

I shut the power down when at work and at night. Even with the firewalls and all, no one can hack you if the power is off.

Nope...normally stay logged on the whole time, though at night it's usually in 'sleep mode' to save the monitor and hard drive. I do have a proper firewall though which everyone should have. It should be pointed out that just because you are sitting at your computer at the time, it doesn't mean that someone can't be hacking right in to your hardrive and you not even see it.

We turn ours off at night, so we obviously log off then. We don't worry about hackers too much during the day because DH has put up a pretty good firewall. We did have a hacker once, but that was because he had messed with the firewall so that he could do some stuff for work. He sat down at his computer and saw that someone else was logged in. The hacker destroyed some of his Windows files, so he had to reformat. But DH fixed the firewall, and we've never had any other problems.

we never log off or shut down our computer....i love dsl!!

We now have DSL and never log off, unless the connection gets slow for some reason. Back when we had cable, a tech told my husband it was best to log off periodically.

Only log off during bad weather, when out of town or once in a while when we'll be away for the day to give the computer a rest.

I dont think I ever log off from the Dis, nevermind the internet. ;)

We have a firewall set up, but we still shut down at night. I do this mostly because there is no point for my computer to be on and running for the time the I am either asleep or at work. On weekends though, I do keep my computer running all the time. Today I also have my computer running to get a virus scan going since I didn't get one in two weeks in a row (I do it weekly) now.

Thanks to dizneenut I have a firewall now..
Thanks Miss Jasmine..it's zone alarm

I shut my down...don't like leaving anything "on" that I don't need to. Glad you got your firewall...this thread has inspired me to start a "firewall thread"...hope some will post to it. Thanks! :)

SAFE & HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! :)

Shut down every night-rebooting regularly will address a lot of issues that home pc's develop with memory slowness-as a matter of fact the first rule of trouble shooting is reboot often. This also helps protect the machine from power outages and what not -we also turn off our modem when we are leaving town.
