Do you ever get annoyed (irrationally) when someone doesn't like your city?

Nah it doesn't bother me any. I just wish that people would get with the times and quit thinking that my city is all smokey and black form the steel mills from years and years ago.

It wouldn't bother me in the least because I can't stand where I live! Now watch I'll get jumped on saying I hate MIssissippi...which I don't I just Hate the town I live in. If it wasn't for family and John's job we would be gone.

Im about 20 minutes from Boston, and no I dont get offended. Ill be the first to admit Boston(parts of it at least) is a dump. I refuse to drive there and I try to avoid it most of the time.

However, a friend of mine got in an actual fight/screaming match with another one of our friends husbands because he insulted Boston and he is from Rochester NY. During this fight, she did research on statistics and all kinds of stuff. Now that I thought was completely irrational. WHO CARES????? Is it worth not talking to someone ever again over? Ridiculous!

Nobody ever says they hate where I live - Most people have never even heard of it, so how could they hate it? :p
Now, the thing that bugs me, is when people hear you're from NY & they automatically assume NYC or that you're close to NYC-
Nope! Nowhere near it - Thank you very much...

Hey, Leota, Brockport is the place with the big SUNY campus, no?

I spent a weekend up there about 20 years ago. My cousin went to college there, and his sister and I went up to hang out with him for a weekend.

We had a blast, too! But it's too snowy for me.

i do get protective of dc, but not irrationally so. when someone is making fun of dc for one of the many legitimate problems here, i often join right on in. i get upset when people start making fun of dc for things that aren't true. :)

I'm originally from NJ, and the only thing that used to annoy me was that people assumed I spoke with a north jersey/NY accent. Uhm... HELLO? Did you NOT just speak to me? I do NOT have an accent... :)

Or.. "You're from Joisey? What exit!!??!!"

People also only think that NJ is just like Newark. Hard to believe that you can drive in my hometown of Old Bridge, and find farmland :)

That being said - there have been times when I have been almost embarressed to say that I come from NJ - when people take on an attitude that there is nowhere else in the country -but- NJ or even NY for that matter. As much as I would like it to be the case, the world does not revolve around this tri-state area. :teeth

leota -- you know where i grew up. i used to get asked about nyc all the time, and we live a good 5 hours away! :p

Would you believe there's people who think Chicago is a farm town? I was visiting friends in L.A., and you would have to laugh at what some people's version of Chicago is out there. I guess I get most annoyed at people who say we are unfriendly, it's boring, bad music scene, fake people, we are no New York, etc, etc....and these are mostly from people who were here for like one day!! (bands and people traveling through)

Obviously, I can make fun of our corrupt politicans. It 's a way of life here!

but I still love it!;)

I lived in Houston & didn't care for it at all.

It does bother me a bit. I am from NYC and when I am away from NY and people find out where I'm from I can tell they are either stereotyping me or sizing me up.
I think since September 11 the NYC rep has changed in people's eyes though. :)

Why, no one has ever made fun of my state or city have they?

Everytime I get angry at someone stereotyping the South in general and Alabama in particular, some idiot in my state exemplifies their point and I have to concede.

Not that there aren't ignorant, racist loudmouths in all states and of all races, of course!

And I had to date my cousin..we're all cousins down here!!!:jester:

Another Cleveland'er here. Comes with the territory.

What really annoys me is a "friend" who likes to bash the town we grew up in. She trashes the schools (her dad taught there for 30 years), she says nasty things about the city (my entire family still lives and works there). She acts like our city has the plague. I still LOVE it there. What's not to love about a city with the most gorgeous view of Lake Erie????

venting done...........
