... listen to your iPod or some other similar device while you drive?

I noticed quite a few people this morning doing this and it always baffles me..

No, never.

I am always baffled by the people reading their morning paper on the interstate while going 65 mph.

I've done it. If you keep the sound very low, you can still hear everything. Try it, you'll see. :)

I've never seen anyone with headphones in. Most newer cars have a plug in for ipods.

We had to put a new stereo in the 2002 Explorer we bought for the kids because they wanted a plug for the ipod. (Well, we didn't HAVE too, but it was a nice cheap stereo and it made everyone happy).

i drove and listened to my mp3 player once...june 6, 2009, but i was driving I-75 through Georgia headed to WDW in the middle of the night and it was almost totally deserted. i had to have something to keep me awake while DH and DD slept. i was ok until about 5:30 am, and my eyes wouldn't stay open any longer, so DH took over.

ETA: i was only wearing ONE of the earbuds! left ear!

are you sure they weren't corded headsets for a cel phone?

The ones that come with the iPhone look exactly like iPod headsets except for the small microphone on the cord. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be really seen if you were looking from your passing car.

In Illinois it is against the law and when caught they don't go easy on you !!!

In Florida, it is against the law to drive (or even ride a bicycle) with headphones or earbuds in both ears. One ear is okay, but both will gain you a ticket, because it's very dangerous to cut yourself off from the outside world while driving. I can understand turning the stereo up very loud, but I can't understand putting headphones or earbuds on.

I didn't know that! That could explain it.. at least partially..

I was just curious to see if people actually did that (listen an iPod type device and drive).. I have an FM transmitter that lets me hook my iPod up to the speakers... I hate when I forget to bring it cause then I can't listen to my iPod... I just always thought that was a big faux pas while driving to have headphones on.. but I didn't base that on anything.. I just never did it myself.

That's what I have. Every once in a while, if I need to make a phone call, I use the hands-free earbuds.

I would never drive with headphones on. I believe in many states it is illegal to use headphones.

It makes texting, putting on makeup and drinking coffee so much easier. And i never wear my seatbelt.

Sometimes when I leave the gym and it's a good song I'll leave them on, but most the time they get in the way of my seatbelt.

Even when riding a bike? You're kidding! I do that all the time. I've never gotten a ticket. Maybe because I only ride on the sidewalk?

As a rule- no. It's dangerous because you wouldn't hear emergency vehicles. However, last trip to Disney I just HAD to a few times while driving. Kids weren't being bad, just really wound up. I couldn't take it anymore and needed to zone out. ;)

For about $10 you can get a device that connects your IPod to your car radio. I listen to my IPod all the time in the car, but through the radio.

I recently saw a man drive out of a parking garage wearing a pair of those Bose noise cancelling headphones. I know that's what they were because his car was in the exit gate next to mine, so I could see them very well. Now, that's got to be illegal!

I wouldn't normally, but I did back when I was studying for the bar and didn't have a car CD player to play my educational CD's in. I would listen on my way to and from work.

I believe some states have even more readily-enforceable laws. If you've got an iPod and want to listen to it in your car, buy a car with an iPod dock, use one of the cheap-o iPod connectors, or have one of THESE installed in your car.

If my profoundly deaf students can get driver's licenses (and they can), I fail to see how it can be dangerous for a hearing person to drive while wearing headphones.
