Do you eat raw seafood?

Yep. We go to Apalachicola every year just to enjoy the oysters and seafood. :-)

I got violently ill on oysters back around 1997, and wouldn’t touch them raw for many years, but I enjoy them, for sure!

I do like certain types of sushi, but I do have my limits. I used to travel to Asia for work, and told folks I would try anything they said was “good,” as long as they tried it first. :-)

Ever had "live" seafood? Once I had lobster sashimi. As in really, really live. In Japan they call it "Ikizukuri" (prepared live). It was at an Asian fusion restaurant in Australia where it was some sort of local spiny lobster. This looks pretty similar to what I had.

For anyone squeamish - don't watch the video. Of course oysters on the half shell are basically being eaten alive.

Oysters and clams, yes. I eat most anything from the sea, but I’m pretty sure everything else has been cooked...even if served cold....shrimp, octopus, squid, etc. I don’t care for raw fish. I’ve eaten it, but don’t enjoy it.

Ditto. :thumbsup2:)
(Except for the squid and octopus - cephalopods are friends, not food.)

There's a trick to using an oyster knife. I wear a rubber palmed gardening/utility glove on my left hand with the knife in my right (dominant) hand. I don't sharpen it and don't need to. It almost never slips, but if it does it just glances off the rubber without cutting into it.

The best oysters I've ever had were straight at an oyster farm. One was so good - the employee there said that it was pulled from the racks just that morning.
Thanks for sharing this - have been googling 'oyster knife' for the past half hour.

And yes, freshness really matters - it's just a different experience. I love raw sea urchin generally, but had it once in the ocean freshly cracked and rinsed in ocean water. Best sea urchin I've ever had.

Me, wife and girls 6 & 8 all eat raw sushi , nigiri etc. My fav is raw salmon and snapper but I eat it all. We also all eat our steak rare.

My personal favorite knife is a Dexter-Russell S134 - 3" Boston pattern with a sculpted handle. I'm confident enough to shuck an oyster with one without wearing a glove. The biggest reason I have for wearing a glove is that I like Pacific oysters, which have shells that can be rather jagged. A towel will usually do to keep from getting cut by the shell.

Strangely enough I never had sea urchin until our last trip to Southern California. My wife really wanted to have sushi, and I found this place near our hotel called Show Sushi. They had all you can eat sushi ($30/adult for dinner), and we just overloaded. Almost everything on their menu was AYCE. This wasn't like a buffet place but where pieces were ordered. I got a little of everything, including uni for the first time. I said I'd never had it before, and they said it was somewhat of an acquired. I actually liked it. Kind of buttery, but with a little smokiness. I've seen it before (including at Asian markets with the spines) and touched it in tide pools at aquariums, but I'd never eaten it before. Here's an interesting article:

Sure, but not on my own. I pay professionals to make sure the fish is safe for me, first.

Love me some sashimi!

Nope! I have eaten pickled fish guts though, lol.

I don’t eat cooked seafood there is no way I will eat raw seafood.

I have a Dexter Russell, an Oxo, and a Victorinox which I dont have a preference on. However Dexter seems to be the brand of choice with the local watermen. I just use a kitchen towel to hold the oysters.

YES!! Love sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. I would eat it more regularly if I could. (right now I have it about once or twice a month)

Oysters I don't have regularly but I will partake. :)

Oysters are the only seafood I eat raw. But I eat boiled or some kinda seafood probably 3-5 times a week (crabs, crawfish, or shrimp). I don’t like sushi though.

Just sushi. We stopped eating raw clams after all those reports came out a few years ago.

Oysters? Absolutely. I've never had clams on the half-shell, but that's mostly because I love steamers- why have 'em raw? I am not a sushi fan, but that's because I don't like seaweed. I've also had ceviche a number of times. I like it enough- I eat it as a shared appetizer but I'm not sure I'd order if for myself, but only because there are things I prefer. I've also recently discovered I like tuna, too, which is basically raw, just seared on the surface.
PS- I eat raw ground beef, too.

I love sushi, oysters are good too but usually too expensive.
Buck-a-Shuck... my favorite time to eat oysters! About once a month my sister, cousin, and I get together and wreak havoc on the local place that does this! DD joins us about every 4-6 months (she lives a few hours' drive away). There's nothing like a freshly-shucked oyster with a little lemon squeezed on (or chiffonade), and some ice cold gin for a chaser... ahhhh...

Yes, i eat raw fish and seafood. I've been eating it for 30+ years. I don't eat beef, pork or poultry so I feel my risk of getting sick is mitigated by that.

Love my seafood, boiled (crawfish, crabs, shrimp) and most fried with exception of oysters. Will not eat anything raw though - and the sick practice of eating something alive is beyond repulsive to me!
